Can a person who has consumed three 6-packs of beer a day for several
years safely quit cold turkey without entering rehab? Thanks. Eddie

Maybe, maybe not. I am assuming you mean detox rather than rehab.
These are two very different things. I would see a doctor and get his
opinion. Haven't you asked the same question here before?

I have done this multiple times in my life, and I don't think I was ever in
danger of the more severe side effects like DTs, blood pressure spikes, etc.
That being said... We are all a bit different and if you're serious about
doing it, It wouldn't hurt to visit your Dr. and get advice base on *your*
current health. IMHO

There are ample web sites with home detox programs. Risk is probably
the same as in rehabs if recommended care is taken at home. Arguably
reasonable care is often a shortcoming at rehabs where the $ is
paramount. http://tinyurl.com/cyljoy

Dunno about three six packs, may have averaged less or more because I
seldom cared how much I was drinking as long as I had the next drinks
organised, and was so used to the terrors when drying out that when I
quit for good it was cold turkey alone at home - without even knowing
the idea of home detox was supposed to be something special.

Not recommended . You would do well by seeing a doctor.
A older man died in a room next to mine in rehab a couple
years back. It happens.

Dave,

Are you asking because you don't think that 18 beers/day for several years
is a lot?

It seems to me that whether it was 18, 8, or 1, that if the individual felt
that it was taking a negative toll on their lives, that should be enough
reason.

Just wondering

I didn't see where he said it had a negative impact.
I have been sober quite a few years and know why I got sober.
I like to hear the reasons and mine had nothing to do with my health
or impact on others.

Regards....O why did you get sober?

Hi Eddie,

Good question and there is no absolute answer but your mind and body will
soon tell you. Addictions have two parts, the physical and the mental. If
you body is physically addicted you should notice in a day or less by the
feelings of withdrawal. If you've patterened your life over the past three
years around being able to consume that much in a sitting then chances are
you have some strong psychological ties to drinking and all the routines it
brings. The advice below of not recommended is a good one and sever
withdrawal can come with many medical problems. A smooth detox period is a
strong recommendation to start the process of sobriety. Once the alcohol is
completely out of your system then it's time to really face the prospect of
changing the behavior that's gotten you to 3 six pack a day. Let me know if
you have any further questions.

Oh yes. How you do it depends on you but keep yourself busy, whenever
possible stay away from situations that would make you drink. Keep plenty of
cold milk in the house assuming your not lactose intolerant and talk to
people. tell them what is bugging you. You do not need religion of any kind
but if you follow a religion then it can help you.

I don't follow. Why do you percieve him as a troll? His question sounds like
someone asking for help. Surely that is the point. That other fellow; the
one asking about where he can find a bar in New York, now he sounded like a
troll.

We're all different, but you might try just tapering off. 18 beers
yesterday, 16 today, 14 by the end of the week 12 to 10 next week,
etc...... But if you want to do it, you MUST stick with it.

Another thing is to alternate between real beer and non-alcoholic
beer, and gradually increase the N/A beer and less of the real stuff.

If there's a will, there's a way. It would likely be much more
painful going cold turkey in detox, even if they did give you drugs to
assist.

As others said, it wont hurt to talk to your family doctor.
