A lifeless horse lays tangled in power lines in Moore OK
Mondays deadly tornado wreaked havoc on the humans of Moore OK,
but it battered many animals, too. The Orr Family Farm & Celestial
Acres Training Center lies inside the 17-mile disaster-zone that
the 1.3 mile-wide twister traced onto the land. The training ctrs
large indoor arena & 4 barns were completely razed to the ground,
leaving dozens of horses exposed to the elements. Lando Hite, an
employee of the Orr Family, told KFOR that he rode out the storm
in a horse stall. He said that before the tornado ripped through,
he set some of the horses free.

tornado a day earlier Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Moore OK
I tried to let some of the horses get loose & free out of their
stalls so theyd have a chance, Hite told KFOR. Workers were
just beginning to pick thru the rubble with rakes & brooms on Wed
morning. Thirty-four of Celestial Acres horses had made it thru
the storm & are either fine or healing. Tony Vann, the farms
spokesperson, said that it was impossible to know how many horses
had died until workers fully assessed the damage. The training
facility shelters horses that are owned by other families. The
number of horses on the property varies frequently, so Vann could
not confirm how many were on the property during the tornado. NBC
places the number at approximately 125. Any records that the Orrs
kept were most likely destroyed by the storm.

The huge tornado roared thru Monday, flattening entire neighborhood.
Most of the buildings were either leveled or damaged beyond
repair, Vann told the NY Daily News. Theyre going day by day.
Staff workers discovered a bright spot in the middle of the
destruction at the Orr Family Farm, a visitors center located
next to Celestial Acres. The sheep, chicks, rabbits, & pigs that
were sheltered in the Orrs petting zoo were found huddled
together, safe and sound. The ponies that the Orrs use for pony
rides Annie, Joey, Sister, & Lil Bit, are battered but doing well.

This is what remains of the Celestial Acres training facility.
This empty space once held an indoor arena & 4 barns with stalls.
One pig that was white before the storm came out of it looking
brown, Vann said. They were really dirty, but they made it thru.
Employees who sought refuge in storm shelters managed to survive
the storm, Vann said. The farms owners, Dr. Glenn Orr & Tom Orr,
are still counting up their losses.

The Orrs barn sustained substantial damage after the tornado.
Its a long road ahead, thats very important to understand,
Vann said. Many of the Orrs Facebook fans have volunteered to
help rebuild the farm. The Orrs have set up a Horse Hotline for
those who would like to offer horse supplies. That number is
405.283.2258. Well wishers can also donate to the farm through
PayPal or GiveForward.

I, and apparently many others, would appreciate a disclaimer at
the beginning of this article alerting readers to the possibility
of graphic pictures. The pictures of the single horses are bad
enough, & I know the point needs to be driven home about how dire
the situation is, but the pile of dead horses is stomach churning.

"I don't want to see photos like this" "They should not put pics
of dead horses piled up" "I don't want to see the devastation, it
makes me sad!" Waaaa! You whiners all need to get on the ball &
realize your sentimentality is what's destroying our country.

Is it really necessary to show all those dead horses piled up
like they are nothing but trash? It's bad enough you included the
horse tangled in power lines. These innocent creatures probably
suffered a great deal of terror and pain. Have some decency and
respect, would you?

You need to get real. Stop living behind rose colored glasses,
life is tough & not everything is made of pink lemonade and
lollipops, my dear.

What an unsettling article. Absolutely no need to share photos.
These animals are peoples pets. If you're gonna share something
of this sort, tell me all the horse slaughter farms were destroyed.

Were these pictures really necessary? Did they really need to
show piles of dead horses?

This is just one of many heartbreaking stories on all the vics.
Animal rescuers, local and nationwide, need help with the animal
vics of the tornado. I am not downplaying the human vics' plight,
just mentioning this in context of this article. Various FB pages
have been set up and a central database is being attempted.
However, non-tornado-related, local animals also need a lot of
help, as resources are diverted to help OK vics. Also, shelters
are always extra-overloaded when holidays come up; people decide
to "dispose" of their pets rather than pay for boarding when they
run off on vacation. You can search on NY PAW LEGAL TLC to start.

So sad to see that many dead animals. They would have had the
chance to escape if they weren't trapped.

Not all were trapped, one guy opened doors & let 'em go. But
really, where would they have gone if they wern't "trapped"
everyone was trapped, I doubt the horses knew of a nearby
storm cellar
