We here at KRLF Newsdesk have just completed an
investigation of an a.r.aa poster. In short, here's the
poop:
We loaded up the Eagle and took off deep into the
Appalachians of West Bygawd Virginny in search of
information for use in hyperbole stories on the
destroyed ecology of that state, as well as info on a
particular poster by the screen name of Craig S. In
keeping with our usual standards, any dirt would do.
The ride down was bathed in sunlight as we twisted and
wound through a seeming seascape of reds, yellows,
oranges, greens and browns. We looked left and looked
right and found only a few terraced hillsides all
replanted and already growing new woody vegetation.
The human inhabitants seemed to be rather well adapted
and not gnashing and wailing at the destruction we'd
heard so much about. In fact, they were very gracious
and hospitable, and lacked any sign of despair
whatsoever (with the possible exception being the
peculiar whining twangs in their voices).
In general... we found the state and it's natives to be
in beautiful condition and spirits. <sigh> Well... there
would always be the muckraking we could do in re:
certain individual residents and this is where the case
of Craig S. came in.
We researched his whereabouts in mid-morning with the
aid of another a.r.aa poster. E-mail revealed that he
may indeed be locatable and gave suggested methods...
thanks ______ (you know who you are... and we never
reveal a source)... your leads were invaluable.
Phone conversations with a known Craig S. associate led
us on a journey along rivers and bridges, villiages and
rail lines (well, OK, we didn't *actually* use the
rivers or rails... but we did get to see them and cross
them as we drove) and finally some ten miles up a
mountain.
We damned near caught the brakes on fire at one point
and laughed and sneered at the incredible gall of some
nit-wit to put a 'HILL' sign in the middle of a
seemingly 2 mile descent downward. This was just before
the 90deg bend without guard rail. It may have been dark
and scared the bejezus out of us... but the trap didn't
get us and certainly did not deter us either. We
advanced.
Soon after that experience we came upon the secret
hideaway in the back hills of that mountain state known
as Craig's Secret Hideaway In The Back Hills Of The
Mountain State. There were vicious dogs circling as we
arrived and we could hear laughter and glee coming from
in and around the main complex. We knew it had to be a
cover.
There were a few guards outside, but we fooled them with
our knowledge of the secret handshakes and the
accompanying code phrase of 'we're Ralph & Donna from
outside of Pittsburgh' to which each and every one
responded 'hi Ralph... nice to meet you' (suckers...
working these folks over to get to their head honcho was
a piece of pie). We infiltrated successfully.
Well... after some extensive undercover research we
finally found him sitting at a table in a room with
windows all around. While many of the mob surrounding
him seemed to be introducing themselves and getting
acquainted... they certainly did all seem to know the
subject himself. We introduced ourselves with all the
secret terminology specific to a.r.aa and the internet
and he became aware that we meant to have a few words
with him. We did... for some three hours give or take.
Here's the report on what we found on Mr. S. :
He was young, tall and athletic looking... probably
drinks Tang and spends entirely too much time in the
gym. The women seemed particularly fond of him and one
in particular (a beautiful and energetic sort) visited
several times as we interviewed him and, more than once
even, kissed him right on the lips (the other women
didn't seem to mind). I remember thinking 'he's a lucky
guy'.
His superior intelligence was immediately apparent,
although he never seemed to be puffed up in it.
Conversation turned corners from work to play to God to
family and he never let the good guy image slip up once.
He's good... he's verrrrrryyyyyy gooooooooood. Heck...
even *we* were feeling good about our time together as
we prepared to leave (and everyone *knows* us cynical
sorts don't ever like *nuthin*).
There was, however, one room that he seemed to be
denying us access to and the others there backed him up
on it (well... almost all, but he wasn't good enough to
get us in).
He followed us out the door while seeing us to our
vehicle and we exchanged the secret handshake again (I
don't think he ever caught on to us). We put the Eagle
in 4 wheel drive this time and slapped it back into D2
so as to make a careful and safe exit down the
mountain... still hearing the laughter and the chatter
through the quiet night as we made our way.
In Summary:
a.) The scenery, weather and ride were great and the
people along the way were nice.
b.) The subject was cordial, bright, good looking and
fun to talk to. His friends and women were genuine and
kind as well.
Drat.
We'll be back, Mr. S... maybe sooner, maybe later... but
we'll be back. You can't keep up the good guy image
forever, ya know.
And the rest of a.r.aa can be certain we could turn up
anywhere at any time... maybe NY or Mass... maybe
Ireland... maybe even Indiana... hell, we just might
even show up at *your* door any day.
Till then... this is Seekstytwho reporting... have a
great day.
Slid out of my dreams like a
baby out of the nurse's hands
onto the hard floor of day.

I double-dog-dare you.

Sounds like you had a good time, Ralph.......
BTW, Guy Clark was already sold out.....so I don't get to see him
tomorrow night....I will pay better attention in the future....I have a
feeling that FP will be the same situation. This place in Easton is
really small, and located right near a college. Will give that a shot
tomorrow.....

I'll leave the light on for ya :)
Thanks for the report, Ralph. Sure made me wish I was there :)

--The problem is more with a sense of pride,
That keeps me thinking me instead of what it is to be.
I'm not a passenger, I am the ride. Chris Smithers, "I Am The Ride"
Jaysus, I thought I was reading the Irish Press there a chara,
you absolutely sure you didn't detour past the Blarney Stone.

Hey Ireland 's a small place Ralph. If any of youse ever appear here
without info'ing your convivial leprechaun, I'll place an everlasting
curse of the gypsies on your innards. How'd ya fancy wearing yer
intestines outta yer nose.
Cheers and ta for the itinerary,
Tommy
Here in Mass, Mr 62, the coffee is always on and the welcome mat out.

heehah, like I've always told you all Mark, the talent is gorgeous and
quite amicable to Americans also, however the workforce here is also
very up to standard and mostly uni grads.
Coffee though is barely passable
Tommy
I've actually heard that Dublin is the place to be in Europe for high-tech
happenings. Seems you guys are quite on the leading edge. Besides, London is
too big, too crowded, and too expensive....France is, well, ummm...it would
be a nice place if it weren't for the French ;-).....

The part about programming and software is spot on Mark. Again it's
because of the high points system here to get into uni to study Law or
Medicine (honestly). So they go for maths and believe it or not
although we 'waste' time during formative years studying maybe Irish
and Religion, we tend to do well in maths. So most opt for business
mgt accountancy and I T. Hence we have an IT college in most cities
and towns and the 'outside' lecturers and mentors are mostly actually
in the profession, as opposed to just plain teachers. (not saying
teachers are not good also).
Seems to be also that the US have spotted the benefits of low tax,
high investment yields and good staff.
In a hurry,
see ye tomorrow
