As far as I understand AA it's a 12 step program.
The steps include God.

First I wonder... have you done the steps? If not I wonder why you would
associate with a group that is based in them - regardless of what
dissenters among the ranks say. Why be a dissenter? Just move on I would
think.

Interesting I say because I had your trademarked POV at the beginning of
my AA participation.

When I got to step three - with a sponsor - he simply suggested, gently
and with no explanation, at least that I accepted... "Just do the
fucking step".

I read the first 164 over and over in that first few months. Trying to
figure it out. To find a way of rationalizing what they were saying from
a "superior" (in my mind) angle.

God was not only an asshole... but all powerful - by definition - based
on what I was taught and the concept of God that I had.

And I hated God.

God had done exactly the opposite of what I would have done if I were in
charge.

I was pissed. Seriously.

The step stating "God as you understand God" for me was about
surrendering to a God that had fucked me and probably will fuck me
again, and I had no control over it.

One day I got the situation pretty clearly as I had it configured in my
current, at that time, understanding.

1. God was in charge - all powerful
2. I have no control over God
3. God clearly has other plans than I do

Suddenly in a single moment I got this amazing sense of powerlessness. I
really saw that if there was a God, and I believed that there was, that
God was going to do what God wanted regardless of my opinion. I was a
potential target... no matter what I did.

In that moment I saw that the only thing that would change if I did the
step was my relationship to being fucked.

I surrendered and said... "OK God if you're gonna fuck me have at it!
Whatever... fuck you."

Instantaneously I started laughing and experienced a sense of release. I
really didn't care. EXACTLY the same experience as getting wasted.

Sign me up mo-ther-fuck-er! :)

This experience of release available at any time at any place under all
circumstances has freed me from the obsession to drink / use. I have a
tool that replaced my previous tool to deal with what Freud called :
"The common anxiety that is life".

There may be a "God" or not.

To me what's important is a sense of peace withing the not-knowing that
ultimately life is. Like Charlie M. No certainty... really.
