Just what it is about AA that makes one bond with the fellowship?
Ideally, I think, it would be finding comfort, support and renewed hope
for the future in a fraternity bonded by the experience of a common
struggle and accomplishment. Of course, that is not always the case.
When someone claims to be a member/representative of AA and yet resorts
to ranting and name calling (assholes, etc.) it does not reflect on AA
(other than that not *everyone* can carry the message) but rather the
individual. Even an alkie who is still drunk commonly has the intuition
to sniff out a poseur.

Don't know Ken, but having known you for a number of years, I kind of
suspect you harbor some of the same feelings as I. I know how hard I've
worked over the last 14 years to attain some kind of status on ARAA, and
being of a *not* *yet* perfectly, recovered alcoholic variety, and also
knowing and accepting that I most never am likely to be even close to
saintly, I most of the time fall back into my old *all* or *nothing*
mentality, i. e, "Gawd Damn It! If I can't be best, I'm damn sure not
gonna settle for middling nor mediocre, so I'll shoot for the bottom
instead of the top." So rather than striving to become and portray
myself as the most erudite around, I've endeavored to at least be the
biggest idiot on the ground. I work damn hard 24/7 to maintain that
distinction.
It just pisses me off when these guys show up and come in here and make
me look so inept at my efforts and small day to day achievements at what
I'm trying to do with my pitiful struggling efforts, and they do it with
such finesse, grace, sequential transparency, facility, ability, they
make me look like a Sasquatch or quadriplegic octopus trying to do
Ballet in Hob Nailed Jack Boots. Fscken wannabe or Pseudo-Idiot, or even
an Idiot-Savant with no developed abilities at all other than Idiot
Recognition...

I'm with ya on the How dare you.... if there is going to be name
changing it ought to at least be something along the lines of:

The wonderful thing about this place is the removal of one's insanity
without ending up sane. The ability to say no to the 1st drink and
still be a functioning practioner of insanity is right up there with
red light green light! Unlike the drunks who have all the answers to
all the worlds problems, but can't get out of bed in the morning, here
you can find all the answers by people who can get out of bed in the
morning. Some if not most are actually sober too.
You're right about the experts here.... this is the place to come to
double check and find out is the civilized world has a clue ...if you
read or hear something in the CW and then come here and it doesn't
match up then you know it's bullshit and can ignore it. This is an all
inclusive expert problem solving site ... hardly any important topic
is bypassed ... here solutions are freely offered up ...gives new and
expanded meaning to practicing *this principles* in all your
affairs...which I think is what AA suggests too.
What one finds here (imo) is a mixture of those who would not
ordinarily mix with those who wouldn't ordinarily mix. People who have
taken the time to reach deep inside to find the deep reality and are
perfectly willing to share it and give it away freely. They range from
intellectuals to nutbars, span oceans, and are full of hopes
..sometimes conflicting hopes, but hopes nevertherless.
Here you don't find the blind leading the blind ... you discover the
blind walking the road hand in hand. A place where if the shoe doesn't
fit ... well then you just don't have to wear it! If next week it does
fit you can change your mind and put it on! Very few doormats can be
found here, but for sure there are plenty of welcome mats.
If an unsuspecting persons stumbles in ... they get the choice of
being welcomed or leaving .... they don't have to leave nor do they
have to stay ...it's their choice ... the party line is there are no
party lines.
