Wouldent it be better to direct people to www.geocaching.com instead, where
you can actually play this game, and read everything there is to know about
it from the people who invented it and run it???

They (Geocaching.com) did not 'invent' geocaching. It was first started by
Dave Ulmer (albeit a slightly different name). In fact they did not even
invent the current term/name, they simply commercialized on it. They also do
not 'run' it as it is an open sport run by the players and they certainly do
not promote or know all there is to know about geocaching. There are several
sites and variations of the sport including some types of caches they do not
support or promote.
I do not see how pointing someone to alternative sites and/or useful
information (as the original poster did) is a bad thing and it is nice to
see it still happens. This way those interested can visit all the sites and
truly learn ALL there is to know about geocaching.
By the way a pretty accurate history of geocaching can be found at
www.gpsgames.org .

Here in Britain geocaching was invented one hundred and fifty four
years ago by James Perrot. Dartmoor is the area famous for it. In
those days you had to find the "letterbox" without a gps. It's
called letterboxing here, although American style geocaching has also
arrived

geocaching.com is nothing more than a commercial website trying to make
themselves a buck.

They didn't invent the sport, and they don't run it.

Yes letterboxing and geocaching probably have as much in common as they have
not.
Still another example (though a stretch :0) )
Not sure many folks know how to use a compass any more.

I personally prefer the old style, which requires a knowledge of
orienteering. I've done a small bit of geocaching with the GPS and find it
to be not very challenging. I only carry my GPS when I'm doing work for the
Endangered and Non-game Species Program - they require it for marking
species location. I'm not knocking GPS by any means, but would never rely on
it as my only means of finding my way around the woods. I think geocaching
is great, no matter who invented it, especially as a family activity to get
the kids interested in the great outdoors.

I signed up to geocaching.com and it didn't cost me a cent. True they have
fees for advanced capabilities, but one can get by very well without
spending a cent and they have the largest number of caches of any of groups
that I've looked at.

I've had an account there for over 6 years and never sent them a dime.

But they are the most well known.

Neither have I sent a dime to my local TV station, but they make a ton of money
because I'm exposed to the commercial advertising they display.

An interesting variant to visit as many exact lat-longs as you can,
although many are in boring oceans or difficult polar regions.
One contest is to do all in the continuous US states.
