Hubby and I are considering buying a CD-ROM Topo Map Series. We are looking
at Delorme 4.0 and National Geographic CD-ROM Topos. Has anyone out there
had any experience with either of these programs--good or bad?
Thanks
Lady

I have been using DeLorme's two products: StreetAtlas, and TopoUSA 4.0

I live in the rurals of Washington state and have used these for mapping and
for geocaching. I'm afraid there are roads on the CDs that exist ONLY on the
CDs. I have found a number of inaccuracies. But I must say that there are
probably more map features whose coordinates are close to my Etrex
coordinates. I suspect that in areas of higher population density, the
DeLorme accuracy is better, but I have not tested this idea.

I have no experience with the National Geographic maps.

I've got the National Geographic CD-ROM for the San Francisco Bay
area. It is based on USGS maps, and like most such maps, it is out of
date by 10 or more years. The software is fine, but you have to double
check the maps.

On the other hand, as far as I know there are no better maps available
on CD-ROM for consumers.

Delormes TOPO 4.0 is based on USGS 1:100,000 scale maps, they then just
interpolated in extra contour lines. It doesn't really have any extra detail
in it. Regarding road data, the delorme product has modern road data for the
most part than what you'll find on the National Geographic product which is
comprised of scanned USGS maps (Tend to be about 20 years old). The national
Geographic product has map detail down to the 1:24,000 scale, which makes it
a much better product for route planning of off road trips.

Delorme has a neat 3D view mode that is a lot of fun to play with, but the
interface in general tends to drive me nuts. I much prefer the the National
Geographic route building functions and interface.

Finally, Delormes TOPO 4.0 covers the whole US whereas the NG product is at
the individual state level, or smaller regional topic groupings such as
national parks. Delormes TOPOQuads is more similar to the NG product
regarding detail and accuracy.

For what it's worth

As others have said: I use National Geographic's TOPO. PROs: the amount and
quality of the detail available. CONs may be a bit out of date as far as
roads go (but geographical features don't change that much) and limited
coverage per CD (a conciquence of it's expanded data .. you can only fit so
much on a CD)

Updates to the driver / viewer program are available on the 'net (the data
disks are the same for each "version") for free. I've updated my program a
couple of times since I've purchased it.

You can also add GPS compatablity with TOPO GPS! and create and upload
waypoints and routes to your GPS.
