I'm using the free version of Google Earth, and that may be part of the
problem, to get the .kml files for geocaching.com. Does anyone know if
there is a way to force it to do a route the shortest way or the way you
want to go? An example would be, I did a route from Dyersburg Tn to
Memphis and it took me back across the river to Missouri then down I-55
to Memphis, way out of the way to begin with, plus my object was to find
the caches along hwy 51. The only way I have been able to make it go the
way I want is to do the routes in small segments between towns on the
same road.

geocaching.com on a way to make google earth follow the route you want
it to follow.
