My dogs were just sprayed with skunk scent. Does anyone have a time-
tested method of getting rid of this putrid scent...? All suggestions are
appreciated.

I always thought the tried 'n true method was a bath in tomato juice,
although, thankfully, I've never had to try it out... :-)

Well, the classic cure is tomato juice but I also hear that drug stores
offer some kind of product that neutralizes the smell. You might also
check with your vet or local pet supply store.

I had a St. Bernard once that was sprayed all over.

I tried baths in ketchup, tomato juice, and anything
else, but they didn't really help much.

But then again, he was sprayed badly, and he ALWAYS
smelled anyway.

Good luck.

My cat got skunked a couple of months ago. I called my vet and was
told that tomato juice is the best thing to use. So, I washed the cat
in the juice as well as giving him three latherings of shampoo and
a conditioning rinse.

The cat still smelled! It wasn't as strong as before, but it was
about a week before I would let him be near me.

You have to let the tomato juice dry on the dog, then
brush off the encrusted junk.

A better solution would be to get a bottle of
Skunk-Off. Its real stuff, no joke.

We have used a product called "Skunk-Off" that works great. You might try
your local camping store or a mail-order place like Campmor. Best of luck to
you :)

Re removing skunk scent, nothing will totally remove the smell, particularly
if the animal received a close up hit. Both tomato juice and plain old
white vinager will cut the smell considerably. I had a cat that got pretty
badly sprayed and we had to bath her several times in tomato juice and
vinager (and give her kittie tranqs to have her even slightly cooperative
about it). Although she did not smell as bad afterwards, I KNEW when that
cat was in the room for the next six months. Eventually, the hair that had
been sprayed fell out in the natural progression of things, and the smell
went away. BTW, the vet we consulted also suggested using Massengill
Douche. After buying some, I read the igredients: Vinegar and water! Five
gallons of vinegar is much cheaper than one bottle of Massengill. :->
