The space for cyclists is 3 meters not 3 feet
This was revealed to me in what I call "divine inspiration," which is more or less common sense. Never mind the "experts" who have passed a law that cars can pass us as close as 3 feet. That's something intangible and insignificant. Probably they were confused by the conversion from metric to old fashioned English system, when the foot... more »

Never be so dumb to follow a bike lane
We've got dozens of them, but none are connected. You may think it would get you through and find out that you are stuck with no particular place to go, a sidewalk perhaps if you are lucky. They are the product of "evil idiocy," to quote someone who was describing driver behavior. This type of idiocy though is the design of the... more »

Wall Street doesn't want you on a bicycle
... I think the bicycle underclass does a disservice to both Wall Street and the bicycle culture. But a good bike could be found for under 300 bucks, still no need for a loan. And Kmart/Sears has layaway so no excuse to feed the banks. We must raise the level of the Proles with the revolution, not drag... more »

We are all waiting for German leadership
No, it's not the Fourth Reich that I'm waiting for, but rather the example Germany displays in QUALITY OF LIFE and BICYCLING, something that concerns me the most. The other two models --sadly most prevalent-- are America and China, which dominate the Globalization, a concept that divides people in WINNERS & LOSERS, in which cyclists and... more »

Should every cyclist train with a wheelchair?
Not only the chances of a cyclist ending up in a wheelchair are very real, but it offers an upper-body workout that is the weakest spot in a cyclist. But, most importantly, you'll be using the public sympathy to your advantage, whereas you are likely to be treated as a dog as a cyclist. Talking about dogs, this reporter went around on a wheelchair... more »

'We All Can Ride': turning gang culture into bicycle culture
On Apr 25, 1:35 pm, "TibetanMonkey, the Beach Cruiser Philosopher" ... ... This is the kind of culture we should be promoting. Not gang culture, but bicycle culture: 'We All Can Ride started in the summer of July 2010 when Egbevado Ananouko and Charles Robertson went on a bike ride out to Powell... more »

Do you threaten pedestrians on sidewalk?
Don't ask me about the morality of it. It's all about survival. I must ride on sidewalk like everybody else in the middle of this bike sharing program. I don't know if it's that way in Paris or London, but that's reality here. I figure that on average I have five near misses with pedestrians and two with cars every single outing. Today I almost... more »

If you want to know the stupidity of the system, consider the 3 feet law
I may have posted this around, but I want to make sure that nobody can dodge the issue, particularly those who can make it safer for all. We in Florida have the "3 feet law" that makes cars keep a minimum distance of 3 feet from a bike, and yet we lead the nation in bike fatalities. California is #2 but it has a much larger population. I... more »

Here's a problem for engineers: How to make a paper bike
(This topic is loosely inspired by a program I heard on NPR last evening) The topic was INNOVATION. They throw lots of problems at engineers and they must come up with the solution. One problem was how to make a bike out of paper. They must be creative and "join the dots," a phrase the kept popping up. The engineers were celebrated as the smartest... more »

Walking a bicycle into a store
That's what I call convenience. I asked at Target, just to make sure, and they told me that it wasn't allowed for "liability issues." What the hell is that? You may bump someone with a shopping cart easier than a bike. And needless to say, when you leave the bike outside, you may not find it,... more »
