I'd like to bring up a subject that might touch a few raw nerves--

I like techno.
I like the clothes.
I like smart drinks.
I like to dance and watch others dance.
I like to have a good time.
I even like E. (in moderation, and only now and then)
I'm 34.
What is wrong with this picture?
I'm not meaning to be patronizing,to turn anyone in to the cops, or be any
kind of wet blanket. I'm a writer, a long-time cyberpunk, and a dedicated
neophile, with a good sense of humor about the situation. None of the
other people in my town who are anywhere near my age even *go out* any
more, much less try to listen to any music that doesn't sound like
something out of the 60's or 70's. On the other hand, everyone on the rave
circuit loves to talk about "freedom" and "tolerance" and at the same time
wants to believe that I'm some kind of dangerous weirdo or a poser for
liking what I like. The essence of rave (to me) is to have a place and
time for all the people who don't fit in the commercial clubs and venues,
and share a certain style. Whether they conform to someone else's idea of
what "coolness" is, is not the issue. I don't badmouth or laugh at you...I
don't say that you ought to live as I do or think as I do. So if you meet
me or anyone else like me around, stop and think. And maybe listen. You
might find a friend.

Me, too (except the part about e)! =)

Well, I'm only 31.

Not one thing, as far as I'm concerned.

Some of the above applies, but my friends whom are close to me in age are
actually a lot like me. Except for attending raves. Well, someday I think
a few of my older friends will venture out into the music with me,
hopefully. The age thing has never been a problem for me and I've never
reall encountered any negativity at all from people at raves. I get a few
odd looks, but then again I'm 6'-3" tall and slightly balding. I think my
height makes me stand out more than my age. But I do inderstand what you're
talking about. Even when I do get some sideways glances thrown my way it's
been mere curiousity, never a bad vibe. And once those unenlightened see me
dance they get the picture; not that I'm anything special on a dance-floor
but it's kinda obvious that I'm not some undercover cop or sumthin'. Ever
since things have had to go more aboveground lately, at least in Milwaukee,
there's a larger contingent of Mainstreamers{tm} present at raves. This
just can't be helped. 'They' want to have a good time, too. And besides,
maybe after one rave they'll get the message/picture/score/thang and
understand what raves are all about (see previous remarks about freedom and
tolerance). What is sad is that the city of Milwaukee and thei police
department don't see things are way ... nightclubs have just as much drug
use as raves do, proportionately speaking ... raves are very rarely in
urban/sub-urban settings with people living next-door ... once we leave the
werehouse we're quiet as church-mice ... we just want to love and be loved.
Someday...

I'd just like to agree here. I can remember at Vision in February I saw two
old ladies (65-75) coming out of the main hall carrying their handbags and
nodding their heads. As they walked past me they said something along the
lines of ' Oh, that was good wannit ?'
I was shocked but at the same time felt a warm sort of glow as I realised
that these old foggies were enjoying the same music and dancing as I was !

Actually, I've been meaning to ask this for awhile...see, I room with my
mother and every once and awhile when I have techno on she'll come in
and dance around in my room. First of all, she's a pretty good dancer
and she has a great feel for the beat. The idea of raves kind of
interests her and I'd like to take her with me sometime so first of all
she'll get more of a feel for why I respond to raving the way I do and
also because she loves to dance. Only thing is that she's 45 [but she
TRULY doesn't look it] and she afraid that he'll be totall out of place
and that some of the kids might get real bad vibes from having an adult
there. Does anyone have any imput? It'd be appreciated :)

Living in the past is easy as is living in the future (think about it).
It appears to me that you've succeeded in the difficult job of living in
today or now. Congratulations.

As for "What's wrong with this picture?" I can only answer:

Is this a trick question? :)

Took my mother to a rave (she's 50) and she had a great time up until she
got on the gyrotron. Thank god she didn't vomit in my car. She had a great
time though, and when she returned to Colorado she took some of her
friends to a rave there. Another convert.

Yeah it's the best

I just wear what ever I got

Has anyone tried these ? Are they any good ?

There are some mad dancers around,

I think everyone does

I love the stuff,

>I'm 34.

I'm 20 and I posted saying I thought that I was getting a bit old for it but
then I received alot of mail from people saying that the ravers they went with
were between 14 and 40. So I wouldn't worry about it.

>What is wrong with this picture?

Nothing at all, keeping doing it and having a good time.
