I 'm new to this forum, so bear with me. I have nothing against
individuals who have a passion for hip-hop. I love hip-hop, and shall
until my demise, but what I do resent are those individuals with
presumptive notions of what constitutes "real" hip-hop. These people
will condemn anyone that doesn't listen to music within their narrowly
confined definition of what hip-hop, which primarily rests beneath so
called commercial rap. This is not a blanket generalization but, more
often than not, these people will invariably reject anyone that
doesn't appreciate undergroun hip-hop. If your main tastes revolve
around more commercial flair like Jay-Z, or pre-illmatic Nas, or any
of the common commercial artists, you're ridiculed as "gay", "wack",
and thereby excluded, in their mind, from the hip-hop culture. These
people act as if a preference for jy-z types precludes any inclusion
in their world of "true hip-hop". These people are the most pretention
and dangerous elements of hip-hop imo. They're often found at small
club events, and their attire and attitudes are all similar. They will
approach you, and attempt to prod you for information that will allow
them to assess whether or not you're a "true head". What's most
interesting is that these people are largely white males. With the few
exceptions of other so called "minorities", these "backpackers" (only
recently became familiar with the term but it seems appropriate) are
affluent white males who feel its their right to appropriate the music
and twist its definitions and rules to suit their tastes. They loathe
anyone that thinks beyond their boundaries and asserts that that
person is not a real "head".

"You're not appreciative of real hip-hop"

"Hip-hop isn't about that garbage music"

If you're not familiar with some of the obscure artists that they
salivate over, you're deemed unworthy of their "props", though I would
never want their "props" in the first place. If your decor is the
slightest bit extravagant (fresh timbs, avies, enyce, sean john)
you're looked down upon and assumed to be a "thug", instead of someone
who simply prefers the finer things in life. It is the pinnacle of
elitism, and borders on racism as well. But I won't delve into the
socio-economic implications of their preferences. I just felt it
necessary to voice my opinion, in light of the recent arguement
between GoldenChild and his detractors. I like Jay-Z. I like Memphis
Bleek. I like a lot of so called thug rap. DMX, Ja Rule. These artists
touch upon content that I relate to. I can empathize with them. I've
endured much of the trials that they lament over through their lyrics.
I respect them, no matter how many "millions" they've amassed or how
many times they're on MTV. I don't have animosity for so called
"backpackers". I have friends who I argue with over what qualifies as
legitimate "hip-hop", but we remain congenial and respectful. I resent
the pretentious "fans" who judge others for their musical tastes. Such
prejudice is the antithesis of what hip-hop was about. Hip-hop is
multifaceted, whether you wish to acknowledge that or not, and you
cannot define it so explicitly as to exclude other artists who've
contributed greatly to its growth. That's all I wanted to say.

Yo I can see exactly what you mean. I have a friend that I can see
listening to a song and banging his head and tapping his feet to it and when
you tell him yeah that was DMX or that was eminem immediately he will turn
round and say "oh I thought so cause that was really wack" I sit there
thinking you fucking like it and you cant admit it. It is so sad that
people cant be content with a song if it is good or not they have to judge
it by " oh fuck that guy is white" or "what the fuck that shit is so
commercial"

I judge shit by how it sounds and if it makes my head bop whether it is a
hispanic a white guy a black or a more commercial MC I dont really think it
matters.

I would like to give respect to Krak@Krak for raising this issue cause I
agree with a lot of the shit he is saying. What also pisses me off about
this newgroup is that many people in this group is that they only reply to
posts that are written by the so called "Cool Heads" why cant people just
read and post and reply to it instead of nopt replying because they aint
good enough at rapping.

Peace

I sort of agree.. My opinion is: there are a few good commericial rappers, a
few good underground rappers, and a lot of really shitty rappers from both MTV
and the underground.

yo...
some underground kid must have really flamed your tastes to merit such a
long display of tears. I only really have one question for you, son...do
you think before you write? you begin with "backpackers (a term younare
admittedly newly familiar with, and only 'seems' appropriate...do your
homework) hate hip-hop--screw them. Then, after you bitch about being
'hated on' by cats, you say you 'have no problem with backpackers..I have
friends who...'--which is it? Screw 'em or no problem? It can't be both
simultaneously.
yo, it's great if you're into 'thug rap.' Personally, I think most of
it's garbage. But, don't you think you generalizing (yes, I read that you
claimed you 'weren't' but you were) a group of people by saying they
'hate' hip-hop is the same as them flaming you for your tastes?
Funny you should mention GoldenChild...I have the sneaking suspicion that
you are he...but whatever. You like the 'finer things'? Great.
BUT...you, not unlike many of the cats for whom you voice support, write
others off as 'haters,' simply because they voice their opinions on what
hip-hop is all about.
And as for them being "white males with the exception of a few
'minorities'?" Is that an issue? Furthermore...is it true? Doubtful.
Hip-hop is a universal medium. There's rich white boys who are into thug
shit, underground shit, pop shit, etc. As is the case for all races and
genres.
I think you might be a lil misinformed, and maybve a lil unsure of what
you actually like, let alone what you think of others' tastes.

Nah he's not Goldenchild. Goldenchild is different from your
anti-backpacker or whatever the fuck you wanna call it. He has an open
mind. He's heard the underground hip-hop but he likes jay-z and shit
like that more. That's cool. That's his opinion. At least he's tried
it out. This kid said he got dissed because he didn't know the
underground artists or something to that effect. Why don't you give it
a listen and see if you like it then? I agree, some people might come
on too strong with their love for the underground. But I like it better
than DMX, Ja-Rule, and all the other shit you mentioned. By the way,
what the hell is pre-illmatic nas?
