Getting into this kind of thing made me realize how many
hip-hop records have covers (and sometimes entire artwork
concepts) that are influenced by comics.
I'm surprised how many different styles are drawn from.
Some of them are influenced by the more cartoonish
characters that graffiti has developped, while others look
like they could have been torn straight out of a comic book.
Of course, sometimes the lines between more traditional comic
styles, 'legitimate' art, mural paintings, computer graphics etc.
are blurred. However, I think a lot of drawn rap record covers
can be subsumed under the comic genre.
Here are some of the records I'm talking about:
"Movies for the Blind" - Cage
"Monsters in the Closet" - Swollen Members
"The Future Is Now" - Non-Phixion
"People's Instinctive Travels..." - A Tribe Called Quest
"The Low End Theory" - A Tribe Called Quest
"Beats, Rhymes & Life" - A Tribe Called Quest
"T.I.M.E." - Leaders of the New School
"Journey to Anywhere" - Ugly Duckling
"The Album V2.0" - Violator
"Straight Out the Jungle" - Jungle Brothers
"Done By the Forces of Nature" - Jungle Brothers
"Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age" - Public Enemy
"Lune Tunz" - Raw Breed
"Civilization Vs. Technology" - H.E.A.L.
"East Side Story" - Kid Frost
"Lord Willin'" - Clipse
"Body of the Life Force" - Afu-Ra
"Rawkus Presents Soundbombing II"
"Will Rap For Food" - Cunninlinguists
"Blacks' Magic" - Salt-N-Pepa
"Short Dog's in the House" - Too $hort
"Soundpieces: Da Antidote!" - Lootpack
"Doc's da Name 2000" - Redman
"Stress (The Extinction Agenda)" - Organized Konfusion
"Train of Thought" - Reflection Eternal
"ATLiens" - OutKast
"Aquemini" - OutKast
"The Diary" - Scarface
"Funcrusher Plus" - Company Flow
"Liquid Swords" - GZA
"A Bizarre Ride II" - The Pharcyde
"Business As Usual" - EPMD

"Chubb Rock featuring Hitman Howie Tee"
"Tunnel Vision" - Tunnel Rats
"From tha Roota to tha Toota" - Field Mob
"Ghetto Stories" - Swizz Beatz Presents
"BB Queen" - Bahamadia
"Soul Food" - Def Jef
"Black Bastards" - KMD
"Operation: Doomsday" - MF Doom
"Labor Days" - Aesop Rock
"The Body-Hat Syndrome" - Digital Underground
"Doggy Style" - Snoop Doggy Dogg
There are just some of the albums featuring comic-
influenced artwork, and there must be even more
in the singles department.
In Europe, the influence is also apparent, the most
convincing covers gracing the following albums:
"KLR" - Saďan Supa Crew (France)
"Lektionen in Demut" - Reflektor Falke (Germany)
"On the Rise" - Aphrodelics (Austria)
"Chromatic" - Sens Unik (Switzerland)
"Leben" - Azad (Germany)
"Das Dritte Auge" - Die Firma (Germany)
"La Morte Dei Miracoli" - Frankie Hi-NRG MC (Italy)
"Supernatural" - Stereo MC's (England)

That's not comic artwork it's a redo of the decidedly film-poster-esque
cover of "I want you" by Marvin Gaye.
Damn... never mind. Glazed over the "Comic book" refernece, and just
threw out anything cartooney.
MistaRyte
wouldnt have said it was comnic book style though. more graffish.
