I have yet to hear Rage Against the Machine, but knowing their reputation
their 'mix' of styles might be too much for me. See, to me the essence of what
makes hip-hop so good is it's PURITY compared to other, more watered down music,
like rock n roll. And I just happen to belive that sometimes when you try to
mix other things with hip-hop you end up watering down the hip-hop to acheive a
blend (although I am not accusing RATM of this or anyone in particular, it's
just something I've noticed).

Flash,

Here is a classic illustration of where you and I differ.

I haven't heard RATM myself. But I'm not going to write them off just
because I heard they were mixing thrash rock and rap. Getting around to
listening to them might not be high on my list, but I can't claim their
"legit" or whatever without even having heard them. Even if I had listened
and found it booty it wouldn't be because of crossed styles.

I'd call 'em booty because they were booty.

To me the essence of hip hop is taking shit (someone's beats, someone's
wall, someone's dance space) and doing whatever the hell you want with it
to make something new and funky. It's not being true to some mythical
purity.
