is snoop doggy dog *really* making money?

i have a general question about rappers and the extent to which they are
really "clocking" the cash they talk about in their records. it was my
general impression about the music business that you really don't make
any money on your first album since the record companies take a big cut
off the top for "developing" a new artist.

consequently, in spite of all the hype of snoop doggy dogg's upcoming
album does anyone know what kind of money he's pulled so far? is he
*really* getting millions of dollars?

i am also curious about other notable rappers like dr. dre, 2 pac, etc.
one video that i saw yesterday on bet called "outta here" by krs one
really got me to wonder about how many of these rappers are really
getting wealthy on this stuff.

ps. does anybody know where one can get RELIABLE information on album sales.
i mean, real numbers of albums sold. not just rap if possible, but all forms
of music. (well at least rap, rock and industrial)

Well from what I know about the music industry, an artist makes about $.50
for each CD sold. That means if it goes platinum they make like half a mil.
Where the real money is at is in touring and merchandising. I doubt that
Snoop is makin all that much money but he WILL if you assume his album will
do as well as it probably will do and all the money he'll get doing shows.
