You obviously haven't seen the picture, and haven't read what the
artist herself has to say about the picture in question.

The artist was conveying the betrayal of the Black race. The Black woman was
betrayed in the same way that Jesus was betrayed. There was nothing derogatory

Art is in the eye of the beholder.
If I find a URL for the picture alone I will post it.
So far, no luck :-(
The fact of the matter is that Mayor G isn't offended by
Jesus being portrayed as a black woman, he's offended because
it's "anti-Catholic". He's playing to his local constituency
and trying to pretend he's morally outraged. The piece is also
"anti-Protestant" but for some reason Mayor G doesn't find that
worth mentioning. For obvious reasons he doesn't find the piece
"anti-Jewish".
The piece is good but the controversy is overblown.

True. If anyone has a closed mind, dont view the photo
WHY is it anti-Catholic?
From my understanding, it compares Black women to Jesus
In any question of racism, sexism or predjudice of any kind, simply
reverse all the races and sexes around.
Reverse scenario: All the apostles are white and Judas is black = white
racism. (The NAACP calls Jesse Jackson and the media.)
The apostles are all black women and Judas is a white woman...
The apostles are all white women and Judas is a black man...
etc. ad nauseum.
Reality: the last supper party was, if the gospel is to be believed,
composed exclusively of Jewish men. They were not even Christians and
(the Apostle?) Paul was not in attendance.
I am content with the more famous DaVinci reproductions. By stirring up
a feigned outrage Guliani (sp?) is doing what fundamentalist demogogues
do in the Bible belt - playing to the predjudice of his audience.
How shameful!

I'm curious what the numbers are. You're probably talking about the
National Endowment for the Arts. But who funds the New York museums?
Presumably city money is going into it; otherwise what basis would the
city have for getting involved? How much? It takes big bucks to run an
operation of that size. I think there are many sources of funds: public
(Federal, state, local), private (various philanthropic organizations
and wealthy donors). The institute board of directors are presumably
bureaucratic animals with a skill of schmoozing. They struggle to walk
that fine line between keeping fund givers happy while doing what they
want to do.

Clearly you find the *idea* of this painting 'blasphemous and racist.'
But have you actually seen it? Or are you getting exercised over
something you have never actually seen?
Are you against freedom of speech? Or against just that speech you
personally find 'blasphemous and racist?'
The painting *sounds* vulgar and stupid to me too. It sounds as if the
"artist" is one of those hacks who must compensate for his lack of
talent by the obvious attention grabbing ploy of presenting something
calculated to outrage. (Naturally, the press cooperates.)
But are you willing to give up a principle as important as freedom of
speech simply to silence an insignificant twerp with a paintbrush?
As I recall, Roman emperors tried to silence the "outrageous" speech of
Christian apostles.
I do not think, when your justifiable anger cools, you will want to
throw the baby out with the bath water.

No, did you see it in person?
If not, is there a link where it can be seen? I did a search and found
nothing.
Yes, along with other works by the artist, Dick Detzner.

It can be viewed at the artist's home page:
http://www.detzner.com/
Click on the button titled "Corporate Sacrilege" and then click on
the top left icon of a painting.
It really should be seen in person; the on-line version does it
no justice. It's a spoof of DaVinci's "Last Supper" with
Mrs. Butterworth as Jesus and includes Captain Crunch as
Judas, Tony the Tiger, Aunt Jemima, Snap, Crackle, and Pop
among the Apostles.

The NEA's entire budget amounts to about two postage stamps per
American per year. The bulk of this tiny pittance is spent funding what
can only be described as "conventional" art. But every single exception
is greedily leaped upon by right-wing media pundits and reported with
lurid headlines calculated to illicit kneejerk outrage by religious
zealots.
And on cue, the professional moralcrats start salvating like Pavolov's
pooch!
Of course, the whole dog and pony show is designed to distract public
attention from the scandalous boondoggles, running in the billions of
dollars, perpetrated by the defence industry and their hired guns in
congress.
The fact that you single out the miniscule budget for the NEA as the
focus of your tantrum strikes me as blatantly disingenuous.
That anyone still falls for this Pavlovian sillyness is always a source
