True. Maybe another case of the very vocal minority getting all the attention?
Steve
Because Steve, you can call the "dr" (of physiology)'s show and kiss her
ass on radio!!! We have to vent somewhere, seeing that she doesn't have
the strength to broadcast anyone who disagrees with her!
This is a good point. She doesn't take negative calls, or critisism. I guess
that is the ultimate way for her to say "hey don't take me seriously." I mean,
a lot of people don't think Jay Leno is funny, but he doesn't have them on the
show to criticize him. I mean it's almost like she gives herself the ultimate
put down by saying that her show is just "entertainment."
Even Ann Landers prints negative letters.
Steve
DL does not see her show as just entertainment and she does expect people to
take her very seriously. Here is an excerpt from the Corpus Argumenti
Lauretti, you can read the entire CAL at
http://extra.newsguy.com/~satire/Corpus.htm
Laurette Argument #12 She's just an entertainer.
Tell that to her. She believes that she is bringing about a
rebirth of morals and values to save a decadent society. These
are some of the statements she has made in interviews: "I
ran downstairs," she says "and yelled, 'Lew, I'm a priest and
my mission is to help God perfect the world!" [Joannie
M. Schrof, "No Whining" U.S. News and World Report, ] "'I am a
prophet,' she proclaims with unapologetic grandiosity, "'This
is a very serious show." and "I want to make an impression. I
have to get people's lives on track. I am a prophet. A prophet
takes a big metal spoon and hits the pan: Hello! I'm here!"
[Janet Wiscombe, "I Don't Do Therapy." Los Angeles Times
Magazine January 18, 1998.] (Dr. Laura later denied having said
she was a prophet, but Wiscombe insists that she did say it
*twice.* See the Bennetts article) "In front of her new
California Mission-style house [in] an exclusive gated
community in the San Fernando Valley, her husband has placed a
sign that alludes to Schlessinger's lofty goals: ON A MISSION,
it says. 'I am getting people to stop doing wrong and start
doing right,' she says." [Leslie Bennetts, Vanity Fair
September 1998.] "Those who create works for public consumption
have a responsibility for the content and the intent. I don't
think it's fair to try to deny that influence by hiding behind
the label "entertainment." [Dr. Laura quoted at
http://www.tvgen.com/tv/magazine/970825/ftr2a.sml] At the
0:32:18 point in the January 26, 1999 broadcast of her show Dr.
Laura said, "...I try to do something on this show. It's not
entertainment. It's not a radio show to me. It's an attempt to
try to help improve things for people in the world, and to do
that you have to live it. We can't say we're going to talk it
and not live it..." You can listen to this statement via Real

Have you ever heard her show???? It doesn't sound like it. She takes
herself VERY seriously. In a recent interview with Good Housekeeping she
called herself a prophet!!! Mohammed was a profit...she's a media whore.
Again so does Jerry Springer, and I consider that "entertainment." Kind of...I
guess...well..some people do anyway...
Steve
This is incorrect. I've read numerous interviews of Springer, and he doesn't
take himself seriously at all. He might defend his show, but he calls it as
serious as pro wrestling.

She praises them, sure. It is not too clear to a lot of us that she practices
them. For instance, she talks about the rule against gossip, and then
described a person who interviewed her as obese and jealous. I for one admire
people who have standards more than I admire people who praise them.

I don't know about making fun of her, but I like the idea of a rational
discussion of her suitability as a messenger, one that adduces evidence. Come
to think of it, alot of that discussion goes on here in this ng, in between
bits of sarcasm.

Actually, she seems to do a good job of staying with what is popular to me.
Pretending to be in a persecuted minority of moralists looks to me to be quite
popular at present. Not only DL, but Jerry Falwell, Jim Dobson, William
Bennett, and John Rosemund have become very popular taking this tack. In fact,
I'd say DL is a bit of a latecomer.

I'm going to have to rewrite Laurette Argument #2 and give it more attention

If you'll expand your view a little and delve into history, you'll
see that 'rules and discipline' and morality have a love/hate relationship.
Also, in Doktor Laura's worldview there is always one victim of a crime
(not counting children). Her compassion extends no farther than that.
The Dali Lama could teach her a few things.

Those 'simple-statistics' mean little. Half of them prove premarital
cohabitation is benefical, and the other half prove it isn't.
People like Doktor Laura recklessly use statistics for their own benefit.

But a little less selfish than Doktor Laura.

Correct. Modern day monkeys already HAVE evolved, and will continue to do

If the only two choices were (a) Doktor Laura's morality, and (b) no
morality, you would have a point.
They aren't, and you don't.
>What's with this woman suggesting some kind of

Can we take it that you see nothing wrong with equating living in a
co-ed dorm with murder, or suggesting to a child that their stepfather
wants to molest her?
Interesting morality you have there, bub.

Both are fair observations, given her behavior and the style of her
show.

Sorry, I must have missed that in the FAQ. The next time I see a post that is
funny, I will resist the urge to laugh, or to compliment the poster until I am
told that I may do so by the Dr.(since apparently the good Dr. speaks for the
entire group).
BTW, what exactly are the qualifications? I can only hope that in my lifetime
I may be able to earn them, at which point I will really have lived.

We have an official newsgroup expert who decides what is funny and, more
importantly, what is not, here. Unfortunately she is ABEND. Some of us Jackals

Steve, Charlie is commenting in reference about one of the infamous
Pack o' Jackyls who has recently disappeared from our ranks. Maddi
was the acknowledged expert on "what is funny, and more importantly
what is not."
By all means, feel free to laugh, but not to judge what is funny on
this NG, that is Maddi's job, and no one has yet displayed the
qualifications to take her place.
