SCTV Volume 1 Network 90
Nearly 13 hours are spread out over the five discs of "SCTV Volume 1," and
it still won't be enough for fans of the legendary comedy show of 1976 to
1981. Produced in a cinderblock studio in Edmonton, Alberta, and performed
by Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine
O'Hara, Dave Thomas and John Candy, all veterans of Second City
improvisational troupes in Toronto and Chicago, SCTV began as a syndicated
30-minute series and was eventually picked up in a 90-minute format by NBC.
The present set, produced by the Shout Factory, contains all nine episodes
of the first NBC season, with further volumes to come.
Much of the program's enduring appeal comes from its balance of character
comedy ‹ Candy's showbiz hustler Johnny LaRue, Ms. Martin's brash Edith
Prickley, the beer-chugging backwoods Canadians Bob and Doug McKenzie of
Mr. Moranis and Mr. Thomas ‹ with parodies of popular television formats
though which the characters cycled with surrealistic abandon. The best
episodes in this collection take advantage of the 90-minute format (about
65 minutes without commercials) to extend sketches beyond the "Saturday
Night Live" three- or four-minute mark into minidramas, like the attempt by
the showbiz bimbo Lola Heatherton (Ms. O'Hara) to stay sober for her
comeback special, "Bouncin' Back to You."
The many extra features on the discs include alternate track commentaries
by Mr. Flaherty and Mr. Levy, as well as 90 minutes of "making-of"
documentaries and the complete SCTV tribute filmed at the 1999 Aspen Comedy
Festival. A must have. 1981. $89.98. Not rated.

Anyway, we pre-ordered the SCTV box set a couple months ago and received it
yesterday, yippee! Watched the first episode and the retrospective feature
last night. These are the NBC 90-minute episodes begun in 1981 - better
production values - but not the more raw, hilarious first syndicated ep's I
wish they had begun with. I'm hoping if enough people buy this set they'll go
back and add the first shows to future sets. Odd, really... John Candy has
been dead for some years and the others have gone on to age but it's John Candy
who looks so young to me in these shows; he's practically a kid.
