In days long gone being a troll really meant something. It was more
than a passing drive by, more than a hobby; it was a wicked craft
practiced by evil SOB's who worked really hard, day in and day out, to
be the best goshdarned horrifically annoying, disruptive troll they
possibly could be. So great was their skill and dedication, they would
sooner or later unite the entire community into plotting their
comeuppance in a glorious pile-on flame war.
These were magnificent examples of sociopathic bastards. Some would go
straight for the one line, originally written, ego-deflating kill
shot, others would bide their time, pose as legit message board
participants and get inside your head like an online version of
Hannibal Lector. They had wit, they had style; at times they had a
certain Ted Bundy kinda charm. Most featured colorful screen names,
TrollingWiz, LiberalismInDecay, RuthlessBushDog, along with sock
puppets galore all acting as pseudonymous cyber-chariots skimming
through their dark Id, dredging up and refining their dysfunctional,
multiple personality traits like rare, flawed, mental jewels from the
bottom of a personal intellectual cesspool and delivering them on
target with serial killer consistency. This is just not going to cut
it:

McCain seeks internet trolls to push campaign-approved talking

The Phoenix Gazette, August 25, 1994 -- "Cindy McCain was investigated
recently by the Drug Enforcement Administration for stealing and using
Percocet and Vicodin [schedule 2 drugs, in the same legal category as
opium], both narcotic painkillers from her aid organization . . . the
county attorney's report provides a window to drug dealings within
Cindy McCain's nonprofit corporation . . . Gosinski also alleged that
Cindy McCain abused her husband's office and diplomatic privileges by
transporting illegal substances overseas. He also claimed, according
to her lawyers, that Cindy McCain tried to prevent him from providing
accurate information to the DEA."
When was that? It's always seemed like spam to me...political
spam...or mental illness spam
You ignore what you can and do what you can to make the rest
entertaininng.
Mental illness spam is probably the form that reflects least badly on
the perpetrator, as their deluded mind actually believes they are
"making it big" on usenet (which is what makes it so easy to turn them
into a form of cheap entertainment)
Political spammers, on the other hand, truly have to be the bottom of
the sociological barrel though, sort of a cut below the telemarketers
of the 90s.
My God that must be a depressing existence.
