Just thought it was time to repost the S50 bug list from SBS for those who
haven't stayed on top of it.

They're down to 21 show-stopping bugs. But there are 26 missing "features"
(although things like "Memory Full No Warning" and "Volume buttons don't
work consistently" are bugs, not missing features).

Just in case anyone needed an update here.

FROM SBS (http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34978)

Instead of whining about the lack of a master list of bugs, etc I decided to
get off my butt to start one. Sorry I am far from an English major and type
like crap but here’s my start.

This is all I could think of off the top of my head and fresh in my mind. If
people reply I will make an effort to add additional stuff to this first
post so people can just look at the beginning and get a summary. (might be
some time in between- work and life interrupt my playing on the internet at
times ) If the Mods want to edit this first post and add- please feel free.

“BUGS”

1) COLD WEATHER. There is a known issue with the car DOCK in the cold. Below
a certain temperature the DOCK internals must warm up in order for the tuner
to work correctly. Symptoms include sporadic signal reasons although you
know you are in a good spot. The unit also might need say ‘searching for
signal’ or ‘acquiring signal’ or something like that. DAB has made Sirius
aware of the problem and they are looking to see if there is anything that
can be Done.
2) SAT ANTENNA DISPLAY- the antenna display on the live listening screen
only shows up when the signal goes down. If you have 4 bars it will only
show you that at start up. If you use the antenna strength screen in the
menu’s you can get real time accurate sat signal results
3) TERRESTRIAL SIGNAL DISPLAY in the menus’ gets ‘stuck’. If you travel from
an area without a terrestrial receiver (no bars in the menu) to one with a
repeater the antenna aiming display will show both sat and terrestrial
signal. But once you leave the area with the terrestrial repeater the
display gets stuck and insists that you always have terrestrial signal
although that is not the case . Also might do other oddities- some users
(see thread about LA signal strength) that the Satellite indicator does not
appear to be accurate when in areas where the unit is utilizing the
terrestrial signal.
4) BACK TO BACK RECORDINGS FAIL- Back to Back recordings requiring the unit
to Wake Itself up in the Home Dock apparently fail at times. Likely because
the Unit is busy shutting down at the time it is supposed to start recording
the next show- WORK AROUNDS- leave the unit on for the recordings just mute
your outputs however you can, or leave 5 minutes between scheduled
recordings. Seems to be related to implementation issue #7 below.
5) YOU CANT DOCK OR UNDOCK THE UNIT WHILE IT IS ON. This was a major issue
with the earlier firmware. It would completely screw up the unit. It seems
to be corrected mostly in the current firmware but personally I still wouldn
’t do it. It has been reported that if you undock while on during a
recording the entire recording will be lost.

6) RANDOM LOCKUPS Although much better then initial firmware still
apparently more random lockups then there should be.
7) LOCKUP JUST BEFORE SCHEDULED RECORDINGS. See
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33991&highlight=lock+scheduled+recording
Apparently for some the unit locks up at the start of scheduled recordings
when in the car dock OR the home dock. For others it shuts itself down and
doesn’t record from the car dock. OWEN spoke to Support 1/9:
Quote:
I just got off the phone with Samantha at the S50 Technical Support line. I
explained the recording lockup issue at length and this is what she assured
me.

1. They ARE aware of this problem.
2. They ARE working on this problem.
3. There is no known workaround for the freezing problem.
4. The fix for this problem WILL BE included in the next firmware update.
5. The ETA on the next firmware update is "within 2 weeks".
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35009

8) NO PSRAM ERRORS: From the FAQ...
I am getting a NO PSRAM message when I try to pause live content, what do I
do?
Follow these steps...
1. With S50 on in car/home dock unplug power.
2. With S50 out of the dock plug power back into dock.
3. Put the S50 (powered off) back into the powered dock.
This procedure does not work for everyone. It is possible that you'll be
advised to bring the tuner back to the retailer and swap it out for another.
It has been reported by a few forum members that the 3 finger reset does not
fix this problem.
To do the 3 finger reset contact S50 tech support.
*Others report- that Reset Channels from the menu also fixes the issue.
9) UNIT BUMPING OUT OF CAR DOCK. This appears to be a HARDWARE issue with
SOME of the car docks that they do not firmly hold the S50. Since docking
and undocking the unit while on can cause issues, this unintended docking
and undocking can cause other problems. Some use rubber bands or stick on
rubber pads to create friction to keep the unit in the dock. Only seems to
affect some units so exchanging a faulty unit might be a better idea. ALSO
RELATED UNITS THAT ARE TOO FIRM and are somewhat harder to seat in the dock.
This can cause problems for those unaware because they might not push the
unit all the way in to seat it and the unit might also bounce out. With this
docks a little harder push to seat the thing is all that is required.
10) ACQUIRING SIGNAL – different from the acquiring signal error when cold
(see #1 above) . Some people just randomly get acquiring signal. Undocking
and redocking (always while off of course :-) ) seems to correct it for some
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33448
11) MEMORY INDICATOR IS WRONG seems he memory indicator is faulty. Some
people report seeing negative values at times. Others unrealistically high
values, still others report positive values when the device is empty.
12) GENERAL INSTABILITY WHEN LEFT ON LONG PERIODS OF TIME- seems if you
leave the unit on in the dock for extended periods (several days) it will
get flaky. Audio cutouts, lockups, or other oddities can occur. (windows 98
anyone??? better to reboot every now and again....)
13) MY CHANNNELS DISAPPEAR- sometimes My channel content disappears when the
unit is undocked. Usually they seem to come back when you redock the player.
14) VOLUME BUTTONS FREAK OUT- some users report the volume buttons get
messed up and both either turn the volume up or down. The reported fix is to
restore defaults.
15) FM TRANSMITTER STUCK OFF. Sometimes when the unit is shut down or
powered off in the car dock, the FM transmitter will not work when turned
back in. Reported workaround is to undock and redock the unit. Also turnign
the fm transmitter off and then back on again in the menues may be a
workaround to this problem.
16) SCHEDULER DATABASE GETS CORRUPTED- I thought it was just a bad
implementation- see #3 below- (RESET CHANNELS KILLS FUTURE RECORDINGS).
Seems in fact it is a bug- or there is a similar bug. Besides having see all
the Channels to 255 once- recently it decided to change all my start times
to begin 5 hours earlier. I have 5 recurring M-F shows and all 5 had the
start time changed by -5 hours.
17) CHICK FORGETS- the voice navigator announcements (and I believe
wallpapers too) seem to at times revert to their generic version. Work
around= Connecting the PC and My Studio SOftware and doing a reset seems to
redownload the correct files and fix the situation.
18) DOG SCREEN FREEZE UPS/ INVALID CHANNEL MESSAGE - The unit locks up at
the dog screen and will not receive radio. You can navigate around the menus
but can not receive live broadcasts. Fix seems to be perform a channel reset
from the setup menu. Sometimes seems to trigger BUG #16 when the scheduler
gets corrupted.

Jeff confirms in this thread that the channel table is getting corrupted:
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=356679#356679

TulaneJeff wrote:
Problem: After updating firmware the device gets stuck at the Start-Up logo
(or something of that nature)

Caused by: Quick docking and undocking mixes up the channel database

Solution: The unit needs a Channel Update. Dock the unit and get stuck at
the boot screen. Push the Set-Up button (you may need to use the remote) and
you will get into the set-up menu. In device settings you’ll find SetUp >
Device Settings > Reset Channels. Use Reset Channels and is will recreate
the channel table.

Note: Another symptom is when your channel icons and voice files don’t match
up. Do the same thing.

Jeff

Apparently he has been told it's related to Quick Docking and Undocking.
That MAY be one of the caues however I have personally experienced the dog
screen freeze up after leaving the device in the dock for saveral days at a
time. So there appears to be other reasons the database can get corrupted
(see #16 which can happen along with the dog freeze or by itself) - in my
case PSRAM errors also can casue this.

19) CAR START BROWN OUTS- some vehicles with always on power sockets drop
the power level when the car is started. If the S50 is in the dock at this
time, the unit will go into acquiring signal. You must turn the unit off and
on again to correct the error message.

See
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=354552&highlight=brown#354552

And
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=325267&highlight=brown#325267

20) Problem Saving Partial Recordings. The device wont always save partial
recordings when you try to leave a recording in progess.
See:

http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37433&highlight=menu+record+stop

http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36805&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=s50+teases+save+deletepartial&start=0

21) WONT CHARGE IN HOME DOCK. The unit must be ON to charge while in the
home dock. So you cant listen to it all day then bring it home and put it in
the dock to charge unless you turn it on.

“MISSING FEATURES” or other implementation issues

1) BOOKMARKS (or LACK OF)There is no way to Bookmark or save your place when
you shut the unit down.
2) TWO HOUR LIMITS There is no way to record longer then 2 hours at a time
3) RESET CHANNELS KILLS FUTURE RECORDINGS Reset Channels will change the
channel numbers all to 255 on any scheduled recordings so they will no
longer work (go back in and reset the channel numbers after you reset
channels). (MIGHT NOT ALWAYS HAPPEN- MIGHT BE RELATED TO SOMETHING ELSE-
others report they have done this with no issues.
4) FF and RWD are not the most user friendly for moving large distances
inside longer recordings.
5) CANT LOVE OFF TIME BASED You can NOT love a song from a time based
recording on a music channel (just my private conspiracy theory but I think
it’s to keep the RIAA of their butts)
6) WONT WAKE IN CAR DOCK You can NOT schedule recordings and have the unit
wake up in the car dock (even if the car dock is always powered). The unit
will wake up in the Home Dock on it’s own.
7) WILL ONLY START RECORDING AT EXACT SCHEDULED TIME- If the unit is
schedule to record from 2 to 4 pm and it is not unbusy and either in the
home dock or on in the car dock at the exact minute to start the scheduled
recording it will not start it at all. (if you turn it on at 2:01 it wont
just start recording. Would fix bug number 4 above and make the thing easier
to use it would just figure out it is supposed to be recording for that
whole period. Also would allow you to start recording something (i.e. Stern
at wake up) in the home dock and then pull the unit and walk to your car and
plug it in and have the unit pick up roughly where it left off automatically
so you only miss a few minutes and don’t need to futz with FF to do a manual
LOVE.
8) CANNOT LISTEN TO PREVIOUSLY RECORDED and RECORD something else. Unlike
all video devices that have similar functionality you can not record
something while you listen to something previously recorded. Makes the 2
hour limit a major PIA for longer Shows (eg Stern). Also would make My
Channels much more valuable because the unit could be recording new unheard
my channel content in the background while you listen to something already
saved.
9) MY CHANNEL ONLY RECORD WHAT YOU ACTIVELY TUNE TO. My Channels only record
what you actively tune to The unit will not turn itself on to record content
(feel free to tune on at 1am and mute the outputs to record my channels) and
will not record in the background while you do other stuff. So my channel
content is only stuff you have already hear or something that you actively
turned the tuner to and walked away.
10) VOICE PROMPTS ONLY WORK TOP LEVEL. The voice prompts only seem to work
for the top level menu items. Drill deeper down into menus and you have to
read the screen.
11) ORDERING MY SIRIUS SHOWS. My Sirius Shows is listed chronologically but
it is upside down (or plays back upside down depending on how you want to
look at it.) Play the last recorded show and get to the end and instead of
it giving you the next show in order it goes to the last show recorded.
Again a PIA with needing to record certain programs in multiple 2 hour
chunks. OTHER IMPROVEMENTS have been suggested all with their own pluses and
minuses). BIG PICTURE is the developers should THINK about this and USE it a
little and come up with a system to make it more user friendly for browsing,
deleting, and playing in order.
12) DELETE SHOWS. The delete shows screen is very difficult to find the show
you want to delete- Date and time isn't shown and because of the strange way
it orders it's tough to figure out which one you want to delete.
13) MSS LOGO UPDATES INCONSISTANT. Besides updating Firmware apparently My
Sirius Studio is supposed to automatically download Wallpaper logos and
voice prompts without any user intervention. There seems to be no
consistency how or when this occurs. (see FAQ and the “hacking thread” for
manual procedure to force)
14) MY CHANNELS NOT RECORDING 3 DIFFERENT CHANNELS- unless your device is
empty you will not always get 3 different my channels. Apparently each
channel is limited to about 17 hours (totals about 50 if there are 3) but
the unit only records in large blocks and is not ‘intelligent’ as far as
filling the remaining space with 3 different channels. For example if you
have 20 hours of MP’s or my Sirius shows it seems rather then recording 3 My
channels for 10 hours each that it will rather record only 2 channels up to
17 hours each. Similarly MY CHANNELS will only delete an entire channel of
content if it needs more space. If it has filled the available memory with 2
channels (A&B) it appears it can not delete just part of one to add a third
(C), instead it will delete an entire channel (A) and you will still wind up
with two channels (B + C)
15) PAUSE EQUALS SHUT DOWN- with the unit undocked if you pause something
after some period of time it will just shut down. This is a major OIA due to
the lack of bookmarks.
16) FADES- the unit apparently is adds a fade in and out to each song
recorded on a My Channel. They are not user adjustable and at times the fade
goes down before the end of the song and then right back up for the last bit
of the song.
17) SCHEDULER DATES NEVER UPDATE. If you schedule a recurring timed
recording the scheduler never updates the date- it just keeps the original
date for ever. For example if you schedule a recording for Each Monday
starting Jan 9 then schedule a one time recording for Wednesday jan 11- when
you look at the schedule list on Tuesday the 10th, it will show the first
recording due on Jan 9th. The unit will work correctly and record the Jan
11th show and then the Jan 16th (recurring Monday) but it is not the most
user friendly way to list things. It would be better to list them by the
next date of recurrence (even better would be the ability to label them
yourself)
18) NO EQ There is No EQ (It is not clear however if it is technically
possible with the chipset and other hardware involved)
19) CANT REWIND FULLY WHILE RECORDING although the unit is recording 2 hour
blocks and you are FORCED to listen to that current recording. It seems that
one can NOT rewind any further then about 45 minutes into the clip (the
timeframe of the live radio buffer). So if the unit has already recorded 90
minutes you still can only go back ~45. Just adds insult to injury with all
the other poor implementation issues with trying to record and listen to
Stern.
20) CANT CHANGE SYSTEM SOUND VOLUME inability to change volume of the
navigation check and the clicks separate from the entire unit volume. Many
other devices allow low, medium, and high settings for system sounds
(besides the on/off that the S50 has)
21) BROWSE BY IS NOT INTELLIGENT- you can either browse by channel number,
presets, or genre, but the system is stupid and you cant set it to presets
and have the setting stick. Next time you turn the device on it will be back
at browse by channel number. This is compounded by the fact that you cant
just hit the button quickly in succession but must wait a time in between
presses to switch modes.
22) PRESETS BROWSING IS WEAK- besides the browse by being stupid (see
above)- even with the device set to browse by presets and a list programmed
there is no direct tuning. IT would be wise if you could at least set 9
presets to the remote 1-9 and you could press and hold the remote number and
it would jump to the preset. Alternately you should at least be able to have
it set to browse by presets and then punch in the preset number instead of
the channel number on the remote.
23) VOLUME BUTTONS DONT CONSISTANTLY WORK. Volume buttons only seem to work
while one is actively listening to content. Makes it difficult to adjust
volume when switching from dock to headset without blasting yourself in the
ear.
23) SCREEN GOES BLANK WHILE WORKING. The screen blanking function while
undocked only responds to buttons pressed so it will go balnk if the y unit
is busy deleting content and the unit wont respond to any button presses.
Seems that it may lock up also when this occurs (although lockups are not
confirmed- it may just be really long black outs...)
24) MORE CONTROL OF MY CHANNELS- seems to be a common thought from some that
they would like more control of my channels. Ability to pick which channels,
ability to delete some content but not all, etc etc
25) OVERLAPPING SCREENS: While navigating menus if the live radio graphics
are changed (song change or commercial change) the live radio graphics ‘step
on’ the menu display
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37938
not a major usability issue but an annoyance nonetheless.
26) MEMORY FULL NO WARNING- when the memory gets close to full 95 to 98% the
unit will refuse to start any new recordings. First- why does it balk at
only 95%- it wont even allow a 5 min loveing of a show- could be the memory
bug above not displaying the correct amount of free memory. Second it will
at least prompt you if you try to start a new recoding, but there doesn’t
appear to be any warning if you are full and want already scheduled
recordings to occur. Just sort of fizzles out. Not a major flaw just not the
most user friendly.

(reports of changes in 1.3.x indicate this may be addressed)
