What kind of range might one expect from a NRG 50 milliwatt unit when
said unit is used in a subway tunnel? Not that I would ever do that,

Hi,
Depends on the tunnel if it reinforces the signal or not.
If you are able to chose a frequency where the tunnel diameter is an
integer of 1/2 wavelength at the transmit frequency, it could go for
several kilometres.
