This morning on The Current…Afghanistan’s election commission has
cancelled this Saturday's runoff vote…and is proclaiming President
Hamid Karzai the winner. Now, the attention will shift to whether the
Obama administration plans to increase the number of American troops
in the war-torn nation. Today, host Anna Maria Tremonti talks to Mark
Moyar, a Marine Corps University professor who says that more soldiers
ARE needed to win the war. Also on the program, Afghan activist
Rangina Hamidi explains why she believes sending additional troops
ISN’T the solution.

to row across the Pacific Ocean. Also, listeners tell their stories
of what they've quit...including a tale from a woman who quit her

5. IDEAS:

Tonight on IDEAS…the 2009 CBC Massey Lectures featuring celebrated
anthropologist Wade Davis. This year’s speech series is titled “The
Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World”. And in
it, Davis argues that humanity’s greatest legacy is its myriad of
cultures…which is a testament to what people have created as an
inquisitive and adaptive species. This evening, he’ll take listeners
on an astonishing journey through some of the great civilizations on
Earth. He’ll also explore how these fragile and endangered societies
are essential to humankind’s survival.

6. CANADA LIVE:

Billed as the best contemporary jazz band in Canada, the DMBQ – or
Davidson, Murley, Braid Quintet – are no strangers to performing
across the country. Tonight on Canada Live, they wrap up their
national tour with a breathtaking concert at the D.F. Cook Recital
Hall in St. John's, Newfoundland. On the frontlines are Tara Davidson
and Mike Murley on horns, plus pianist David Braid. As leaders of
their own groups, these three have won armfuls of awards. This
evening, they team up with a dynamic rhythm section of Jim Vivian on
bass and Ian Froman on drums to form a gifted band of players and
composers.
