Canada's classical music community is mourning the loss of conductor Mario Bernardi who died Sunday, June 2, in Toronto at the age of 82. Bernardi was one of the leading figures on Canada's orchestral and opera scene in the 20th century. CBC Classical pays tribute to him with unique archival material and an all-Bernardi playlist.
Bernardi was the founding conductor — and later, music director — of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. He was also music director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 1984 to 1992, and principal conductor of the CBC Radio Orchestra from 1983 to 2006. In addition to orchestral concerts, Bernardi conducted 75 different operas during his lifetime.
In a statement issued today, Christopher Deacon, managing director of the NAC Orchestra, said, "Mario was a visionary who led the orchestra on tours of European capitals, to Carnegie Hall, and to cities across Canada." On July 1, The NAC will unveil a bust of Bernardi outside Southam Hall in Ottawa. They will also create a fund in Bernardi’s name to commission new Canadian compositions for the orchestra.
For fans of CBC Radio 2, and those who remember when that network was known as CBC Stereo, Bernardi's name was so familiar it was like aural wallpaper. He made numerous recordings over his long career, and is probably most closely associated with Mozart, although his repertoire was vast.
As a reminder of his scope and excellence as a conductor, we have prepared a Mario Bernardi playlist for you to enjoy.
In 1994, CBC Stereo presented a five-part series on Bernardi, hosted by the late Ken Winters. Listen to part one of Mario the Musician.
