Monteverdi's beautiful Vespro Della Beata Vergine (The 1610 Vespers)
comes to us from Vancouver in a performance featuring the Vancouver
Cantata Singers, The Whole Noyse and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra
conducted by James Fankhauser. They gave the performance in the spacious
acoustic of Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver. Close your eyes and
you're in 17th Century Venice, this week on CHORAL CONCERT with host
Howard Dyck.

THIS MORNING focusses on Canada's West Coast this week, starting on
Sunday with a feature report on Vancouver's downtown East Side. It's
poor, rough, and dangerous, but it also has a sense of community lacking

documentary on the life and work of P.K. Page, one of Canada's best
loved and most respected poets. And on Talking Books, Ian Brown and his
guests tackle Promises, Promises - Breaking Faith in Canadian Politics

Laplante. He plays the first piano concerto by Franz Liszt.

Romande, seven choruses and seven vocal soloists, under the direction of
conductor Armin Jordan. The choirs include Choeur du Grand Theatre de
Geneve, "Le Motet" de Geneve, Choeur de Chambre Romand, Choeur Pro Arte
de Lausanne, Choeur de Chambre de l'Universite de Fribourg, Choeur
Ardito. Sopranos Julia Varady and Maria Angela Blasi, altos Markella
Hatziano and Reinhild Runkel, tenor Chris Merritt, baritone David
Wilson-Johnson and bass Gunther von Kannen, bass are the soloists.
Together, they perform Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in E flat major,
"The Symphony of a Thousand."

WRITERS & COMPANY concludes its three-part series on War and Remembrance
with Paul Fussell. His award-winning book, The Great War and Modern
Memory was a ground-breaking work that explored how war is remembered
and mythologised in literature and in life. He's also written about
understanding and behaviour in the Second World War in Wartime and in
his memoir, Doing Battle: The Making of a Skeptic. His own war
experience changed his perspective on everything that came before and
after, shaping his career as a student and professor of literature.

Michael Bean introduces us to the English madrigal, takes us to the
coronation of Doge Grimani in Venice and to the very first musical
theatre presentation in Canada, called Theatre de Neptune.

NEW FOUND LAND

In 1994 BBC Radio Drama held a series of writers workshops in New York
with a view to commissioning six short original plays. Over 200
American playwrights attended and, out of the hundred plays ultimately
submitted during the workshops, six were commissioned. The six plays of
the New Found Land series were augmented by two Canadian works and all
eight were produced in Toronto. Sunday Showcase is proud to broadcast
the fruits of this triple entente; four in the series will air this fall
and the remaining quartet in the spring of 1998.

This week, the series begins with Rescue by William Patrick. Lally
Cadeau stars as Olivia, a 350-pound woman who has gone into cardiac
arrest in her bathroom. As the paramedics smash their way to her,
Olivia reviews her life and loves, and gradually comes to find the peace
that has eluded her for so many years. Rescue also features Peter
Boretski, Hardee Lineham, Greg Spottiswood and Carol Anderson.

TWO NEW HOURS presents Esprit Orchestra as part of the 1997 Made in
Canada Festival of Canadian Music. Tonight, Esprit Orchestra celebrate
their 15th anniversary, the Canada Council's 40th anniversary and the
launch of a brand new CD, Tabuh-Tabuhan: Music of Colin McPhee. It's a
show packed with celebration and great music with guest artists Rivka
Golani (viola) and Robert Aitken (flute).

This week on RADIO ESCAPADE, Janis McKenzie is dedicating an entire
program to Country music. Janis features many pioneers of Country and
Western - from Patsy Montana to the Carter Family. As well, she also
touches base with the more contemporary sounds of country - from Blood
On The Saddle to Tarnation. There will be one small detour as Janis
welcomes back Vancouver musician and label manager Gord Badanic. Once
again, Gord features his favorite music, Power Pop.

THIS MORNING's focus on Canada's West Coast continues.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Avril Benoit moves her co-hosting
chair to Vancouver. The B.C. focus continues with a story of two NDP
MLAs who were recalled from the Legislature by their constituents. B.C.
has legislation that allows for recall. Does the idea work?

On Tuesday, Vicki Gabereau returns - albeit briefly - to CBC Radio, for
a chat about her new TV show.

On Wednesday, an examination of the booming British Columbia publishing
industry. Also, Dick Gordon reports on the growth of B.C.'s wine
industry. The demand for wine has farmers chopping down apple trees to
plant vines.

On Thursday, the focus shifts from B.C. to the underworld. Michael
Enright interviews Don DeLillo, whose mega-novel "Underworld" is being
touted by some critics as one of the most important pieces of American
fiction ever.

Tuesday - Anton Kuerit presents Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.7 in D
major, op.10, no.3 as part of his continuing series. In concert, from
the 1996/97 Amici concert season, Joaquin Valdepenas (clarinet), David
Hetherington (cello) Rena Sharon (piano), Lara St.John (violin), Mi Hyon
Kim (violin) and Terence Helmer (viola) in a performance of works by
J.S.Bach, Brahms and Weber.

Wednesday - This week's Vocal Wednesday guest is Ben Heppner. In
concert, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sergiu
Comissiona. The performance features Johnny Cowell's Canadian Odyssey
and Bruckner's Symphony No.4 in Eb major ("Romantic").

Thursday - Arthur Kaptanis joins Shelagh to discuss Mozart's Symphony
No.41 in C major, K.550 ("Jupiter") as performed by the Berlin
Philharmonic under the direction of Karl Bohm. In concert, the
St.Lawrence String Quartet.

Friday - Friday's concert features the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony
Orchestra joined by Annalee Patipatanakoon (violin), Roman Borys (cello)
and Jamie Parker (piano). Conducted by Grzegorz Nowak, they perform
works by Mendelssohn, John Estacio and Beethoven.

Monday - In concert, from the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sergiu Comissiona

music and musicians in the Third Reich -- Michael Kater, author of The
Twisted Muse, joins Eric Friesen with stories of suppression,
collaboration and principle.

Wendesday - Live from the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Eric Friesen
presents The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Octet. Works include
Dvorak's Sextet in A major, op. 48, Grainger's Mock Morris, Leighton's
Fantasy Octet on Themes of Grainger and Mendelssohn's Octet in E flat
major, op. 20.

Thursday - The Quebec Symphony Orchestra in concert under the direction
of Kees Bakels with Jean Stillwell, mezzo-soprano. Also, a documentary
report on the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra - the oldest and largest
orchestra in the world.

Hour 1 - Her passionate commitment to writing and playing are evident in
every note - pianist Lorraine Desmarais leads her trio in a concert from
the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Hour 2 - Unswerving in his love of jazz is saxophonist Phil Woods.
You'll enjoy this jazz-man, still fiery after all these years, in
concert with his group at the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax.

HUGH KENNER DELIVERS THE 1997 MASSEY LECTURES

Hugh Kenner, renowned literary critic and writer, delivers the 1997
Massey Lectures in a series of five one-hour programs on CBC Radio's
IDEAS, Monday, November 17 to Friday, November 21.

In his 1997 Massey Lectures, Kenner writes about The Elsewhere
Community: the idea that people have a constant need for stimulation
from a community encountered "elsewhere". From the Grand tour of the
18th century where wealthy, young Englishmen headed to France and Italy;
to our own century where writers such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and
James Joyce lived abroad in self-imposed exile; and finally, as we
approach the 21st century, to the disembodied world of the Internet,
where people can communicate with any number of people across the planet
and never meet face-to-face.

Kenner, the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of English and Franklin
Professor in the College of the Arts and Sciences at the University of
Georgia, has been ranked with Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan as one
of the finest critics to come out of Canada. He is the author of more
than 30 books on modern American and British Literature, including
definitive studies of T.S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and Ezra
Pound.

In an academic world of specialization, Kenner brings together
literature, mathematics, science and computer programming. He is also a
commentator on popular culture, writing about everything from geodesic
domes to Bugs Bunny. "The dividing line between high and low culture is
utterly fictitious," says Kenner. "Genuine culture is neither high nor
low; it involves ideas that you are happy to keep returning to for the
rest of your life."
