In the days that followed, Esperanza set up a
full-blown altar in her room. Scott Haynes had gone
to Europe on vacation with his wife, so she found
more time to devote to her search.
Statuettes of San Judas Tadeo, San Ramon Nonato,
San Pascual Bailon, San Pafnucio, and San Martin de
Porres were lit by novena candles featuring decals
of the same saints, and around them three glass
vases with red carnations, all carefully arranged
on the chaise lounge, the larger saints in the
back, the smaller ones in the front.
A beautiful glow-in-the-dark San Miguel Arcangel.
A Virgen de Guadalupe surrounded by dusty silk roses
and illuminated by a pink lightbulb. A Sacred Heart
with a receptacle for holy water. A crucifix mobile
dangling over the entire altar. Pictures of more
saints pinned to the wallpaper. And, of course,
Blanca's photo right next to the statuette of San
Judas Tadeo, whose tiny tongue of fire lit up by
itself in the evening thanks to a minilight sensor
discreetly placed at the back of his neck.
She also kept a pad on her night table where she had
written prayers with alternative outcomes to her
ordeal for the retablo she was planning to paint on
a sheet of tin, as was customary, and offer to San
Judas Tadeo at his famous shrine in Mexico City when
she found Blanca.

"Be Alert," reads the Nov. 1 bulletin at Our Lady
of the Holy Rosary church in Los Angeles. "Father
Raymundo Figueroa of the Diocese of Tijuana is in
this area and is presiding at baptisms and first
Communions for a fee of $180 per person. He is
here without permission of his bishop."
U.S. churches don't normally charge for the
sacraments unless, as in the case of weddings,
there are expenses such as musicians and flowers.
Simony was a common transgression in the Middle
Ages, when simonists were condemned to hell in
Dante's "Inferno." The modern consequences aren't
quite so dire, but in the most serious cases they
can include a priest's suspension.
