people with a strong N preference (like myself) don't really care whether
the painting is well-painted or not. What matters is that the painting is
original. It must inspire their imagination. They like surrealism like
Magritte,Dali, etc. because their paintings show that even in a "real world"
everything is possible.
people with an S preference like realistic paintings. For them art means
being very skillful . They enjoy the many details of a landscape or
a portrait, and also the wonderful colours. They like Rembrandt, Renoir etc.
T-people like to analyse a painting. Further they like geometric forms. They
enjoy abstract paintings. Typical "T" is for example Mondriaan.
F-persons don't like at all abstract paintings. They would describe
abstract art as being cold. They like impressionistic paintings. Important
is whether a painting arouses feelings in them or not. They like
Van Gogh, Munch, etc.
Has anyone comments on these descriptions. They are very short, and
you might like to add something to it.

Funny, I was just thinking this morning of how interesting it would be to do
a study that related MBTI and art preference.
: people with a strong N preference (like myself) don't really care whether
: the painting is well-painted or not. What matters is that the painting is
: original. It must inspire their imagination. They like surrealism like
: Magritte,Dali, etc. because their paintings show that even in a "real world"
: everything is possible.

Recently, I was in the National Gallery in London with a friend (I am a
high N and he is a high S). I walked straight to my
FAVOURITE painting - favourite only because (I think ) of it's symbolic
quality and the mood it produces in me. He thought it strange - he
prefers Delacroix and others who are able to pull off amazing feats of
technique.

I am a high F and I think most abstract art is boring.

I think you've got the makings here for a new theory of the psychology of
aesthetics here, Harm! (Or is this new - I'll find out if anyone has
done this before and let you know)
