Hi... My name is Stacey, alias Antaries.. most people call me auntie
or ant.. anyway.. I briefly followed one of the psychology groups,
probably several of them I believe about a year or 2 ago. One of the
things I was interested in was a posting about the different
personality types and it had a www listing where you could see what
your type was.. I went.. took the test.. and was intrigued by what it
said, and felt in a lot of ways it described me. I had an online
friend I got curious as to what sort of personality he feel into.. and
decided to look up the site again. Well, since I originally took the
test.. they have become partially a "give me money, and I'll give you
info place".. which is sad.. cuz I think maybe there are some types of
information that should remain free for the edification of all.. and
not subject to "how much can I make" ideology.. but that's besides the
point I guess. You can still find out your basic personality type..
but have to pay (if you don't already know what your other part is..
luckily I already knew..)
I retook the test today just to see if somehow I had changed... but
no.. I was exactly what I was before.. at least the NF part.. and I
assume the other part remained the same.. so I'm a ENFP
Idealist/champion that is based on I believe the Myers-Briggs and/or
keirsey temperament sorter. I took the keirsey temperament sorter on
the site.. I've never taken the Myers-Briggs test.. so I really don't
know if there is a radical difference in the test results..
The keirsey temperament sorter can be found on
http://www.keirsey.com/ be warned.. you can only get your basic
temperament for free on there now.. and you really sort of need to
know the other part to know what you're supposed to be.. If anyone
knows of a place where you can get the whole thing for FREE.. I'd love
to know about it. I'm sort of trying to find out what I can about all
this stuff.. (remember it's my pet project of the day!)
I'm always sort of curious about well.. EVERYTHING.. and when I was
looking up the other Idealist and fell upon the Idealist/healers and
they listed a email group for them.. and though.. geez.. I wonder if
the other personality types have an email list too.. and started
investigating to see what I could find..
My interest in this is I love seeing how other people think.. and am
fascinated by the thought that there might be reliable personality
traits people can have that would enable them to placed in a definable
category based on seemingly benign questions asked in a questionnaire.
I know my results seemed to hit me head on.. so I wonder how accurate
these things have been for other people?

If all this personality temperament stuff is greek to you.. and it's
barely more than greek to me.. let me try to help you as best I can to
explain it.. maybe someone else who understands this stuff better
would/could help? :)

Basically as I understand it.. people can break down into 16
different basic personality temperament types. There are 4 main
temperaments, with each being broken down further into subgroups of
the main type:

1. Guardians http://keirsey.com/personality/sj.html
2. Artisans http://keirsey.com/personality/sp.html
3. Idealist http://keirsey.com/personality/nf.html
4. Rationalist http://keirsey.com/personality/nt.html

the sub groups would break down like this:

1. Guardians
a. Supervisor (ESTJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/sjet.html
b. Inspector (ISTJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/sjit.html
c. Provider (ESFJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/sjef.html
d. Protector (ISFJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/sjif.html

2. Artisans
a. Promoter (ESTP) http://keirsey.com/personality/spet.html
b. Crafter (ISTP) http://keirsey.com/personality/spit.html
c. Performer (ESFP) http://keirsey.com/personality/spef.html
d. Composer (ISFP) http://keirsey.com/personality/spif.html

3. Idealist
a. Teacher (ENFJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/nfej.html
b. Counselor (INFJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/nfij.html
c. Champion (ENFP) http://keirsey.com/personality/nfep.html
d. Healer (INFP) http://keirsey.com/personality/nfip.html

4. Rationals
a. Fieldmarshal (ENTJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/ntej.html
b. Mastermind (INTJ) http://keirsey.com/personality/ntij.html
c. Inventor (ENTP) http://keirsey.com/personality/ntep.html
d. Architect (INTP) http://keirsey.com/personality/ntip.html

I then went to the email groups I found listed for the
idealist/healer, then looked to see how everyone else was doing.. to
see how much activity there was.. and was surprised by what I saw! :)

The email group list is (for those interested):
Http://groups.com/groups/enfp <-- for Idealist/champions (the last /
part would be your particular group
Here's how all the different groups broke down into (at least on this
particular email list.. I'm not aware if there are any other email
groups that might be thriving.. this is all I know about)

1. Guardians
a. Supervisor (ESTJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ESTJ 14 members
b. Inspector (ISTJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ISTJ 15 members
c. Provider (ESFJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ESFJ 26 members
d. Protector (ISFJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ISFJ no group yet

2. Artisans
a. Promoter (ESTP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ESTP no group yet
b. Crafter (ISTP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ISTP 18 members
c. Performer (ESFP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ESFP 7 members
d. Composer (ISFP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ISFP 38 members

3. Idealist
a. Teacher (ENFJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ENFJ 17 members
b. Counselor (INFJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/INFJ no group yet
c. Champion (ENFP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ENFP 423 members
d. Healer (INFP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/INFP 1750 memebers! :)

4. Rationals
a. Fieldmarshal (ENTJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ENTJ 30 memebers
b. Mastermind (INTJ) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/INTJ 62 members
c. Inventor (ENTP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ENTP 706 members
d. Architect (INTP) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/INTP 177 members

So what does all this mean? I'm not really sure.. but personally I'm
intrigued by the thought of sharing and interacting with all the
different temperament types.. and thought maybe others might be
interested as well. I don't know how reliable these sort of test
results are.. or how much credence people have for this stuff.. but it
interested me today.. and I thought I'd share hopefully for the
benefit of others what I found.
You can also find different things on the internet by just looking up
your particular temperament type I typed in ENFP and found all sorts
of stuff!
I did email the owner of the Idealist/Healer email group and
explained I'm not a INFP but rather a ENFP and would love to be able
to join the group if for no other reason than to observe what happens.
I'd actually like to observe all the email groups.. just to see what
they think.. but I started with the largest group cuz they have the
most activity.. I'll try to press my luck with the other groups later
maybe. :) The idealist/healer group is actually created so that
anyone can read the email.. (which was very nice I think).. but I
asked for permission any.. I guess I'll see what they say. :)

What I'm interested in is.. trying to see if people would be
interested in the email groups.. just for their benefit or what if
anything they have been doing as a group.. but mostly just trying to
see what the different personality groups are like. I guess I'm trying
to learn what I can :)
I don't know if anyone would be interested.. but maybe the
personality groups that don't actually have a email list.. but there
is a logical place they would fit.. maybe someone with that
personality type might be interested in starting the group for
others.. or maybe someone who knows how to start newsgroup groups.. I
can see where the concept of the email list could also work here or be
extended to the newsgroups maybe.. just an idea that popped in my
scattered brain... :)

Personally I can see where there might be some value in talking to
people who maybe think or react sorta like you do.. or being able to
observe the different groups you might be interested in... at least
it's fascinating to me.. I'd love to get to know what all the
different types are like!

I'm sorry I realize this was kinda a epic posting.. but maybe someone
will find an interest in it.. thank you so much for your time! :)

Hello,

I remember this test. I always choose the third one from the left on the
first line.
It says: Introspective, Sensitive, Reflective. It continues with:

You come to grips more frequently and thoroughly with yourself and your
environment than do most people. You detest superficiality; you'd rather be
alone than have to suffer through small talk. But your relationships with
your friends are highly intensive, which gives you the inner tranquility and
harmony that you need in order to feel good. You do not mind being alone for
extended periods of time; you rarely become bored.

It's almost accurate.

Most of the time, with the Myers-Briggs / Keirsey test, I score Guardian
(either Inspector or Protector I think), but one time I took another test,
and the result was: 'Chairman'. I don't believe this is part of the Keirsey
typing. Does anyone know this term, it's context etc.? Where does this come
from?

Thanks in advance.

Wouter Valentijn.

Suggests a general type of SJs - these map to Conservators (ISFJ/ESFJ) or
Monitors (ISTJ/ESTJ) - the hierarchy is:

Guardians - Conservators+Monitors

Conservators - Preservers+Providers
Monitors - Inspector+Administrator (aka CEO, chairman).

Note also that all SJs are mappable to SP types when your having an 'off' J
day ;-)

SJs are security seeking. Trust no-one and so biased to
monitoring, supervising, protecting etc etc emphasis on structure/control.

He said it was better to read the types and select the one that sounded most

can not think of yourself as an Introvert or extrovert, but rather, you have
a tendancy towards introversion or extroveersion. Very few people score
100% in every catagory.

In the end, if you are scoring differently on the test at different times,
it is not a symptom of the test being right or wrong. "Watch your feet."
Read the sections and see which one best fits the person you think you are.
If you can't decide between two or three, ask some friends which one they
think you are. (It's possible to have traits of both, the divisions between
the personality styles are not distinct.... with one exception.)

Kiersy believed that pathological states were temproment specific. NFs
engaged in dissimilation. NTs were Schizophrenogenic. SPs were Substance
Abusers. SJs were somatics. In periods of stress, each type would revert
to its own system of pathology.

"So, if you really want to know what you are, you should try to go crazy!"
That, by the way, is a direct quote form Kiersy himslef. The book, Please
Understand Me, is a Pop Psychology book which was generated for the general
public. Don't rely on the test as an actual measure of your type.

LOL!
Exactly!
On a good day, when you feel full of energy and you have had a good nights
rest: SJ. (It's of to work we go <whistling>)
When you feel tired and depressed, maybe even sleep deprived: NF. (Damn!
It's really THAT time of day? Do I really need to get up?)

I see what you mean. I consider Kiersey a bit limited when it comes down to
categorizing various Myers-Briggs types.
He should have included types as the Introvert Judgers or other combinations
like that. Could be called the 'Reflector' type. Handy when it's dark and
cloudy ;-)

Yeah, I know. 100% introvert would be either autistic, or in a deep coma.
100% extrovert clueless?

everything!

<snip>

I think this is pretty much correct.
Here's a description of 'chairman':

"You indicate that you are fairly introverted. This means that you have a
moderate preference for expending your energy on your own world of ideas,
emotions and impressions. You prefer your own familiar because that is where
you feel most at ease. You want to keep the number of relationships with
others limited and manageable, while you would like to see a certain amount
of depth in those relationships.

The way you answered the questions shows that you think of yourself as
neither extremely realistic nor intuitive. You don't seem to have a clear
preference for gathering information by using a "sixth sense". However, you
don't exclude the possibility, thereby allowing sufficient attention to be
paid to information gathered using your other senses. From this, you
construct a picture of the situation you are in at any given time, and also
how your situation could be. You are lead by "inspiration" just as much as
what your senses tell you. It is not clear just how much you have the
tendency to walk with your head in the clouds or keep both feet on the
ground.

As far as the way you make decisions is concerned, Your answers to the
questions show that you are a rather thoughtful person. This means that you
have a tendency to organise and structure information in such a way that
decisions can be made in a logical and objective manner. There is almost no
impulsiveness to be seen in your decision making. You attach a lot of value
to impulsiveness, and like to follow certain axioms It can also be seen that
you are principled and have clear standards of right and wrong. You usually
approach problem areas from an analytical angle, allowing emotions to play a
subordinate role.

An important component of the personality is reflected in the life style a
person adopts. The life style you have chosen suggests that you have a very
strong preference for leading a planned, organised life. The fact that
things are fixed in place gives you a very good feeling. You almost always
plan your activities beforehand, and would like to keep your surroundings as
stable as possible. You will do almost anything to reach this state of
affairs. The feeling that you have insufficient time to keep your life in
order will not be strange to you. It can also be supposed that you are not
very flexible, will almost never make a compromise, and will avoid
experimentation. This could always make you lose some control over your
life. You would rather have everything neat and tidy, reducing the
possibility of surprises to "zero"."

It indeed seems like Guardian, but with some strong Rationalist edges if I
read that second paragraph correctly: I S/N T/(f) J.
But then again, I always score around the 50/50 point in each dimension.

Kiersey himself was not limited in his thinking or theoretical assumptions.
The books are limited because you are not having an interaction with the
individual. Also, the books are written for the general public. In
presenting the theoretical orientation to the public a black and white
approach is generally taken. Look at all the split brain BS that is being
presented these days. It's the same as temproment. The general public
actually believes that different functions occure in different halves of the
brain and do not understand the complicated interaction of both halves
working together. It's easier to pretend that the brain has two halves and
functions are easily divided. POP psychology!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>
>So, following his reasoning, if you're an NT, one might experience

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Everyone can experience everything but in a different way. There is nothing
special about an NT. In the pathological state the NT will create a reality
in which he or she can feel competent. An NT under stress may find themslef
avoiding the stress causing activity and doing something else in which he or
she can feel competent.

In an extreme case the NT is the archetect of conspiricy theories and other
altered states of reality.

Thanks Looney.

I didn't realize.

Thank you for all your replies.
I will investigate further.
I'm starting to believe now that the term 'chairman' is part of a system
derived directly from Myers-Briggs, just as Kiersy.

MOTAR is bored and wandering through newsgroups.
MOTAR assumes the INTJ refers to the Kiersey personality test.
MOTAR is a dead center INTJ.
MOTAR is well aware that INTJ personalities are uncommon.
Generally they are quite content to stay in the shadows and not say
anything until someone in charge makes inept decisions, them they push
everyone out of the way and say "this needs doing right".

MOTAR has spoken.

INTJ is cool. Were you surrounded by dominant competent people that
made personal achievements unnecessary? Did you assume the role as
troubleshooter and perform well? Does "being the boss" seem like too
much of a burden unless some idiot is really screwing up?

I just don't like being in the spotlight. I would rather write the movie
than star in it.

Interesting way of putting it, but you have to have the confidence to
think you can control the plot.

Not control, but direct. How many places have you worked where the boss
really knew everything that was going on? I've only known one organization
like that and the manager in question asked me never to put him in that
position again.

Semantics. Choosing the word direct vs. control is splitting hairs.
The director of a movie has more control over the outcome that the
star. INTJ's are excellent advisors and capable (but typically
unassertive) leaders. They manage more effciently than designated
managers because they brainstorm and make logical decisions without
the distraction of the other superficial managerial duties. If you are
covering your bosses back and keeping him out of hot water... you are
doing more managing... and controlling than him. Nothing is better
than having a boss that knows when to listen to you.

Ha Ha! Why didn't you post three individual requests instead of
crossposting yourself?

Inferior thinking.

Talk about inferior thinking! Why would I waste my time posting three times,
when I could post only once and get my point across, and evidently, it
worked. It's called "common sense". If your going to be lurking and not
introduce yourself, then how could you be so stupid to cross-post so
everyone can see what your posting to other groups? Also, if you want to be
that way about it (and I don't mind letting all your groups hear) GO FUCK
YOURSELF!!!!
Have a nice day. LOL!

You assume MOTAR gave a crap about crossposting... dipshit.
MOTAR is having great day and one as moronic as yourself has little
or no influence on that.

I hope I'm not jumping in and breaking any group unwritten rules. I
stumbled across this newsgroup looking for informative sources on several
mental illnesses, and decided to stick around and lurk for a few day's.

Seems like an interesting group. (I say that in a good way.)

I am interested in knowing, if there is currently, or ever has been, any
study done on the ratio between personality types and mental illnesses.
I'm especially interested in what this group would have to say about any
connection, if it exists.

Thanks!

It sounds a bit difficult to organise an unbiased study there.
Mental illnesses arise from many different causes, have many types,
and affect different age groups.
Most arise in the late teens or early 20s
What about the 50s and later depressive syndrome?
A genetic comparison would make more sense.

A good study could be the detection of stress-sensitivity
and relating that to personality type.
This would be useful on the grounds that people who tend to
deteriorate under high stress will not perform well at
particular jobs.
You want to see whether someone who initially tests well
for a particular job-related personality type will drop out
on a stress test.

Another study could be the detection of someone who actually has
a mental illness, but has no obvious symptoms when you
interview them. There are quite a few tests for that.

See a fairly swept-up employment agency.
They may be able to get applicants to sign a waiver
allowing you to use their data.
Privacy laws will cause you difficulty in collecting
or publishing data.
People who want to apply for high-paying jobs are unlikely to
volunteer for an independent study.

You might find interesting the *Oldham's personality styles* that
address this matter : personality types related to specific mental
illnesses.

http://www.geocities.com/lifexplore/oldham.htm#CNS

Here is an excerpt of the introduction :
"In 1984, John Oldham M.D. began work on a personality system for
normally healthy people based on the neurotic categories of the
psychiatrist's "bible", the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders ..."

---

I would also point out the possible connection between INTJ/ ENTP style
and Asperger's syndrome (AS people). Only a minority of INTJs and ENTPs
could be diagnosed as AS people, however not less than maybe a third or
a fifth of the whole population of INTJs could be AS people.

There are connections, there are studies, especially in the field of "trait
psyschologists".
There is much literature and there are several specific working books on DSM
IV that might help.
