The Animal Rescue Site thanks PetCare Pet Insurance for their sponsorship.

Dear Jill,

Great news! We've got two announcements that will brighten your day: a new,
higher grand total for funded food this past year and a $5 coupon to thank
you for your support.

Literally tons more food was funded in The Animal Rescue Site's first year
than we initially reported. Last week, we proudly reported how many bowls of
food had been funded over the past year. It turns out that we miscalculated,
and the actual amount of food is much higher than we thought!

Instead of funding just 13.6 million bowls of food in one year, you and
other visitors and shoppers actually funded 22.9 million bowls of food! We
apologize for the error. As we celebrate The Animal Rescue Site's first
birthday, we certainly want to give you full credit for all you've done to
help abandoned and abused animals get the food and care they need.

To thank you for your faithful support, we're pleased to offer you a savings
of $5 on your next purchase in our store. You may use this coupon with any
purchase over $35. The coupon will expire after 12 midnight (PST) on July
31, 2003.

FEATURED SCHOOL

SOCIETY AND CULTURE

The Suite University School of SOCIETY AND CULTURE offers these great
courses:

Building Better Body Image
Healthy body image is essential for good mental health and personal
happiness. In Building Better Body Image, we will examine society's
unattainable and perfectionist standards of beauty, learn the long-term
effects of dieting, practice self-acceptance, re-acquaint ourselves with
"Movement" (or what you may refer to as "exercise"), cultivate self-love,
and re-engage in life with passion and zeal.

Celtic Culture

This course explores the various peoples and places that make up the Celtic
world. Although most people associate "Celtic" with "Irish," there are
actually six Celtic countries/regions (Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall,
The Isle of Man, and Brittany) and each will be covered in this course.
Along with an overview of their histories and literatures, we will also look
at important contributions, famous people, landmarks and famous sites, art,
language, film, music, and food.

Cross Cultural Training 101 provides a general overview of cultural issues a
newcomer faces when traveling to or living in foreign lands. By applying the
information learned in the course students will have an easier time adapting
to a foreign culture.

Star Trek, Queer Theory, and IDIC

This course will use queer theory, gay and lesbian studies, film and
literary theory, IDIC (the Vulcan philosophy of Infinite Diversity in
Infinite Combinations), and other approaches to explore how Star Trek
reflects, portrays, and represents homosexuality, queerness, and to a lesser
extent, gender.
FEATURED COURSE
Intellectual Social Movements (20th C. America)

This course examines some of the major intellectual and social movements of
the 20th century American political, social and historical discourse. A
serious attempt will be made to evaluate the intellectual and social
movements by making a dialectical interaction with counter-movements to
understand the identity and objectivity of American civil society through
the behavior of regimes.

The moot question that will be investigated is how intellectual and social
movements of different socio-cultural and historical contexts grappled with
the problems related to social justice, human rights, women's rights, Cold
War, peace and philanthropy in a multi-cultural, multi-social and
multi-racial environment.

Firstly, the students can expect to reflect on the historical and cultural
contours of the intellectual and social movements in the 20th Century
America. Secondly, through the course the students will be able to bring out
a fresh dialogue between social movements and public policies in America.
Finally, students will be able to examine the fact that the intellectual and
social movements in America have not only influenced the world beyond its
border but also are influenced by the world.

FEATURED COURSE

Building Better Body Image

Jane has a date tonight. Strewn upon the bed are discarded blouses, skirts,
pants and dresses. Nothing fits right. She looks too fat in everything: Her
hips are too round; her breasts are too saggy; her thighs are, well, don't
get her started. Slowly, the closet empties. Jane's anxiety increases as
she, literally (in her mind at least), cannot find anything to wear. Thirty
minutes before her date is to arrive, she calls to cancel. Relieved, she
sinks into a chair and quietly feels her relief dissipate, slowly turning
into disappointment. What is happening to her? So she's put on some weight
in the last couple of years; so she's not a size 10 anymore. She can't keep
doing this. She can't put her life on hold forever, can she? This is the
third date she's cancelled in two months.

Christy is a senior at her regional college and is about to graduate with a
double major in English and Sociology. She and her friends meet twice a week
for beer and pizza. Afterwards, they return to Christy's apartment for more
drinks, chips, nachos and popcorn. During her freshman year, Christy became
concerned about a little extra weight she was putting on. She confided her
worries to her best friend, DeeDee.
"You don't know?" DeeDee whispered conspiratorially.

"Know what?" Christy echoed.

"Come with me." Christy followed DeeDee to the washroom and watched as her
friend knelt before the toilet and jammed her fingers down her throat,
throwing up the entire evening's menu.

At the time, Christy had felt sick and shocked. How could anyone willingly
do something like that?

"Don't sweat it, Christy," DeeDee assured her. "Everyone does it."

Christy has been bulimic ever since.

As we enter the twenty-first century, women (North American women in
particular) are experiencing a collective crisis of "body image." Constantly
bombarded by unrealistic and unattainable images of beauty, restrictive diet
books that still condone self-starvation, and an endless stream of
infomercials selling us every piece of exercise equipment imaginable, women
have lost confidence in both our physical and emotional selves. The internal
and emotional struggles we are fighting, however, are now fought on the
battlefields of our bodies. Eating disorders are at an all-time high and the
number of women opting for painful plastic surgery in the pursuit of beauty
is increasing by the thousands. Mental health-care professionals and
feminists scramble to eradicate the lookist messages by which women are
constantly surrounded to little avail; "beauty," it seems, is unbeatable.

In Building Better Body Image, the student gains a deeper knowledge of Body
Image, learning how it affects her personal happiness and overall
self-esteem. She will study the various causes for negative Body Image,
learning to defend herself from those forces that would have her believe her
body is somehow unacceptable. With lesson sections entitled, "Get Off The
Yo-Yo Wave," "Baths, Rose Petals & Satin Sheets," "Write Your Epitaph," and
"Declare War On Your Closet!" the student will learn simple techniques to
increase her self-esteem and retaliate against the negative messages around
her. Through the discussion forum, students will be able to express their
feelings with other women who share similar life experiences, possibly even
making a friend or two.

Whether the student-YOU-is looking for knowledge, counselling, or a safe
place to meet other women, Building Better Body Image is the perfect course
to fit their -YOUR-needs. So, please, join us. We'll be expecting you...

Developer Bio - Chantelle Cherise Dooley
Chantelle Cherise Dooley, 28, is a freelance writer and former English as a
Second Language tutor. She has written more than 35 articles for Suite 101,
and is now completing her fourth on-line course for SuiteUniversity. "The
greatest part about being a writer is sharing your passions and knowledge
with others. SuiteU has been a wonderful vehicle of expression for me."

Chantelle grew up in several different provinces of Canada and spent some of
her early years in Holland, Europe (Yep, she was an Army Brat!). She now
resides in Ontario, Canada.

The Dean of Society and Culture

Jodi Wetherup

Jodi Wetherup is a 30-something divorced single mom living in Southern
Manitoba Canada. Now that the grain elevator is no longer standing, the town
will flash by in an instant if you drive past it. It is there, she says, you
just have to go real slow, and don't blink.

Pagan for more than half of her life, Jodi has set aside her work on her own
tradition (Triskele Celtic/Eclectic) for the time being, as she follows a
long-considered dream to study a Traditional path - resulting in giving her
oath at Samhain, 2002 to HPs Mairwen of the Gwyddonic Order; initiating at
Beltaine 2003, and is currently studying towards her second degree. She
feels like she has come home.

She is a professional writer, having written for Suite101, Backwash, Teen
Witch Newsletter, Whispers of a Stone Circle, and The Gwyddon Nexus (and a
few ne'er do well online travesties such as Themestream) online, as well as
The Beltane Papers and newWitch in print magazines. Currently she is
researching a project to conclude in May of '04, for submission to PanGaia.
In mid-2002, Jodi contributed a chapter to the upcoming
Spells: The Anthology from Seventh House Publishing.

She owns and operates 3Sides Electronic Publishing, which is home to many
popular pagan-themed 'zines and e-books. Currently, there are several
authors completing works to be published for the Fall or Winter release
schedule.

Jodi has been with Suite101 since late '99. She began as a Contributing
Editor (see links above), and within two years had been offered the
opportunity to become Managing Editor (under secondary ID) to an amazing
group of fellow writers. Early in 2003, two more offers were made - first -
Dean of the Society and Culture School at SuiteUniversity; then Community
Manager of the
Society and Culture Community Hub. More recently, she was pleased to accept
a further honor, and she is now also a Senior Managing Editor.

LSN-Jordan Director Nominated to United Nations Expert Working Group

Adnan Al-Aboudi, Director of LSN-Jordan, was nominated as the Mid-East
delegate to the Working Group to Draft a UN Convention on Rights of People
with Disability at the closing session of the 2nd UN Ad Hoc Committee
Meeting on June 27, 2003. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan commended LSN and
others for efforts to promote an international treaty, A Convention for the
Rights of People with Disabilities. This is the first time ever that a
Secretary-General has endorsed a Convention in the planning stages. Mr.
Annan concluded his remarks with a rallying call: "Convention. YES!"

Ten percent of the world's population, 600 million people, have
disabilities. In the developing world, the human rights of people with
disabilities are often abused or ignored. In many countries they are barred
from education and employment. In some countries, people with disabilities
cannot inherit property or adopt children. "People with disabilities," said
Al-Aboudi - a double amputee - "are among the most marginalized and
vulnerable populations in the world."

Landmine Survivors Network worked in multiple ways during the UN meetings
(officially referred to as the Ad Hoc Committee to Consider Proposals for a
Convention to Promote the Rights of People with Disabilities, or "Ad Hoc"
for short) to assist NGO participants and offer guidance to the committee
members on the treaty content and drafting process. Most significantly, LSN
ensured that survivors and people with disabilities were heard and included
in the treaty drafting process. The primary accomplishment of the meetings
was the decision to draft a Convention text and establish a drafting
committee.

More than 100 people with disabilities from all regions of the globe
participated in the meetings this year, in stark contrast to the first Ad
Hoc Committee meeting where Al-Aboudi was the only participant with a
disability from a developing country. LSN worked to increase the number of
participants from the developing world. Nearly 80% of people with
disabilities live in the developing world so it is essential that the voices
of this group be heard at these initial stages of the Convention.

During the UN meetings, LSN hosted seminars called, "Strategies, Tactics,
Empowerment and Practice," (STEP), to help NGOs and persons with
disabilities engage the UN government delegations and communicate
information, while promoting the Convention and building alliances with
other international groups. STEP participants and the NGO representatives
from the governments of 30 countries, including the Middle East region, met
daily during the Committee meetings.

Plamenko Priganica, LSN-Bosnia-Herzegovina Director, gave a moving speech to
the Ad Hoc Committee about his experience in the Mine Ban Treaty process.
Priganica paralleled the present Convention process with the Mine Ban Treaty
process saying, "A key success of the Mine Ban Treaty process was and
continues to be the equal partnership of governments, civil society and
communities most affected by the issue. We must work in the same vein to
ensure first that we develop a quality convention and second that it is
effectively implemented."

A Message From Jerry White

LSN works to link mine-injured individuals to health, opportunity and
rights. In country after country, indifference to the human rights of people
with disabilities is a major obstacle to full recovery for a landmine
victim. In many countries, people with disabilities have few advocacy
resources or legal tools available to secure their full participation in
society. For example, in the Netherlands, a judge ruled that a wheelchair
user was not entitled to accessible transportation because he was not a
member of the public.

LSN is leading a citizens' campaign for a UN Convention on the Rights of
People with Disability. Survivors, including LSN country directors from
around the world, have organized support for the Convention among human
rights, civil rights, disability rights, relief and development and other
communities. We are applying lessons learned from the Mine Ban Treaty
Process to this campaign.

Too long the fundamental rights of people with disabilities have been
ignored or abused. Our goal is for a UN Convention to be adopted by 2006.

As UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said "Convention. Yes!"

In the News

A Washington Post article, "Loss of Limbs and Livelihood," highlights
problems faced by people with disabilities in developing countries. The
story focuses on a war victim in Iraq. To date, 49 US soldiers have been
killed or injured by landmines in Iraq.

The US Government is providing funds to reconstruct the political and
industrial infrastructure in Iraq. But as we have seen in Afghanistan,
humanitarian aid for war victims isn't part of the official reconstruction
plan. Fortunately, a solution is within reach: Senators Brownback (R-KS)
and Clinton (D-NY) and Representatives Lantos (D-CA) and Wolf (R-VA)
introduced legislation to provide assistance to victims of war, conflict and
civil strife, including landmine survivors. If passed, S.742 and H.R. 1462
will provide the resources to equip survivors to rebuild the human
infrastructure in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Landmine Policy: Are Cluster Bombs Prohibited by the Mine Ban Treaty?

Cluster bombs are large weapons that contain dozens and often hundreds of
smaller grenade-like bomblets called submunitions. Cluster bombs can be
fired from cannons or dropped from aircraft. They are designed to explode
before they hit the ground so the smaller bomblets can be dispersed over a
very large area. Fifty-six nations possess cluster bombs and thirty-three
countries manufacture them.

Two important humanitarian criticisms have been linked to cluster bomb use:
1) it has been documented to cause large civilian casualties in populated
areas, and 2) many unexploded bomblets or "duds" are commonly leftover on
the ground after the conflict. The duds and other types of unexploded
ordnance effectively become antipersonnel landmines, and tend to have the
same wounding impact when humans come in contact with them.

Despite the negative impact upon civilian populations, there are no
international conventions, which explicitly ban the use of cluster bombs.
The International Mine Ban Treaty restricts signatories from using,
producing, stockpiling and transferring antipersonnel landmines. But
cluster bombs do not fall under the Treaty's provisions.

High civilian casualties due to cluster bomb use in wars in Kosovo, Serbia,
Chechnya, Afghanistan and Iraq have placed cluster bombs on the
international arms control agenda. Dozens of humanitarian groups and NGOs
have voiced opposition to American and British cluster bomb use in Iraq and
suggested new restrictions on their use by the international community.

LSN Needs Your Support!

The moment a landmine explodes, the world is divided in two: before and
after the accident. Not every victim becomes a survivor. It's a battle.
However, with your help, LSN is able to offer peer support and tools to
thousands worldwide who are fighting to overcome enormous obstacles every
day.

Each day there are more and more victims who need LSN's services. LSN is
often the only group working to circumvent the physical, economic and social
obstacles each mine-injured person must overcome in order to survive. LSN
offers a way for landmine victims to become landmine survivors.

We have come far, but there is still work to do. If you would like to
support LSN's work, go here. If you are interested in receiving LSN's 2002
Annual Report, e-mail jul...@landminesurvivors.org with your name and
address.

THE COMMUNISM LIST

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

The spectre of communism is haunting the world!

Introduction

The Communism List is a global mailing list for those who seek, through
discussion, both the clarification and development of communist theory and
practice. It is intended that the List provides a calm and rational
environment that facilitates theoretical contributions from list members.
These are among the subjective conditions necessary if communist theory is
to flower and eventually extend itself into the consciousness of the working
class. All the objective conditions for the success of the Communism List
are present. Many of the subjective conditions exist too. It is our
conviction that the Communism List will decisively contribute to the
creation of the necessary subjective conditions for the flowering of the
communist cause into a significant global political force. The earnestness
with which you come to the list and the quality of your contributions to
it, however modest, determines whether history verifies this conviction of
ours. We are confident that it will. So actively join with us in making the
Communism List a success.
