First enjoyed with Lesley Gore's rendition long ago. A nice tough set of
lyrics.

I thought she was a little pathetic actually.... nice lyrics for
certain situations, but if I were in her situation, I would have just
gotten rid of the jerk, not write a song avout him.

The lyrics speak to those who are hurt by trusting someone to be fair and
caring.
It's an old sucker deal.
We want the object of our desire, either party, to live up to our
expectations, even with the heel who thinks that we'll be accepting of
his/her control mechanisms (sometimes not realizing they're controllers, of
course).
The whining of the song sentiments that is more notable in Gore's rendition,
is that love is a potentially treacherous endeavor, threatened by cruelty,
selfishness.
When I think of the millions of tortured love songs and movies, it becomes
clear this species so commonly searches for something comforting that which
is seemingly in short supply.
Look at the rising divorce rate over the decades. That only tells a fraction
of the dismal story of broken love dreams.
It's much like a druggie looking for the ever-more-perfect state of nirvana,
but finding something more akin to a wasteland.
Older people begin to usually dump their earlier high expectations after one
love bang-up after another, whether from realization of personality problems
that seem unresolvable, or having no firm basis in reality of sizing up
their partner's entire personality (warts and all), and their overall
compatability.
The internet proliferation of "dating" "friendship" and "sex partner" sites
pretty much heavily underline our desperation.
LOL! (Well, alright, it's not so funny, but I cannot help but laugh at our
seeking codependence for personal happiness, and finding tyrants, idiots,
assholes, cheats, liars, psychos, instead, and not even being aware of our
own picadilloes!!)

That's why I like the way they do it in India with their arranged
marriages and stuff. I don't think it's as bad as it seems to us. Not
so good for the gays, but you can't make everyone happy. I'm sure
there were many tragedies. But in the long run it's far less problems
and pain than the competitive way we do it. If marriages were all
arranged at birth then there would be no need to invest all the
additional effort of finding a suitable mate along with all the
disappointments and tragedies that have traditionally accompanied it.
