“I now realise that I am a European, not an American. We managed to
get on better…with our European partners and at times with the Arabs
than with the Americans. Europeans chat to each other, whereas
dialogue is alien to the US military… dealing with them corporately
is
akin to dealing with a group of Martians.

Thanks goodness!
For years American policy was dictated by London...
Need an example? You won't like it. The British
are VERY good at re-writing history, taking themselves
out.
What, you didn't think that "Religious War" in
the north of Ireland was an isolated incident, did
you?
Anyhow, take the overthrow of the Iranian government,
and the installation of the Shah to power.
The British had been working for YEARS to destroy the
Iranian government, even to the point of being willing
to go to war, but they couldn't because the U.S. wasn't
interested.
Without the U.S., British intervention in Iran would
be an invitation for Stalin to (at the extreme least)
invade & take northern Iran.
Anyhow, the anti-Truman campaign was legendary, smearing
Truman as "Pro-Communist" (because of the leftist
Parliament of Iran had been installed by a joint British/
Soviet invasion during WWII), and it works. Truman
can't get elected dog catcher.
Anyhow, Ike is President and within a few months (and
certainly far too soon for an American plan) the Iranian
government is gone, and the Shah is in place.
Next, they plant in the U.S. press the claim that this
coop was pulled off by the CIA. Well, they planted it
in the NY Times and the Times refused to publish the
story... so they planted in the Saturday Evening Post.
Why they needed to plant the story in the media was to
scare of the Russians. If the Russians were convinced
that it was the Americans behind the return of the Shah,
the Russians weren't likely to intervene.
Need more?
Until about 1980 or so, the vast majority of middle
eastern terrorism that wasn't aimed at Israel was
aimed at the U.K.
The british had enslaved a quarter of the globe, including
most of the middle east, and had arranged the creation of
Israel... as much as they wrote themselves out of the plan
later.
HINT: What is now Israel was British Disneyland since WWI.
Now all that anti-British sentiment has been successfully
transfered to the Americans.
Why?
We didn't create Israel. Oh, sure, we were the first to
recognize Israel, but we didn't create them.
We didn't create any of the governments in the middle east,
before the invasion of Iraq.
Not a one.
Nope. The U.S. didn't place the Saudis in power.
Anyhow, the U.S. had been the U.K.'s bitch in the middle
east since at least the Reagan years, so it's about time
we held a second revolution and told the British to go
pound tea up their asses.
P.S. If the invasion of Iraq was all Bush Dubya, why was
Tony Bair so ready to go in with Bill Clinton back in
1998?
"For years American policy was dictated by London..."
Daft.
Didn't seem to be much use 'dictating your policies' around 1939, did
it?

Actually, I can point to the very moment when
Thatcher not only suckered Reagan into doing her
dirty work, but managed to transfer the middle
eastern terrorism on to the U.S.
Libya.
The British had partitioned and occupied the north
of Ireland since the early 1920s, and even today
(but more so back then) perpetuated a south african
like state where the native population was segregated
and subjected to harsh discrimination. The result, of
course, is the IRA.
Decades go by and the IRA appeals to the world for
help. Libya responds by sending the IRA about 100
tons of supplies, including lots & lots of C4 explosives.
Tensions between Libya and the U.K. are high, and at
one point a (female) police officer is shot & killed
by someone inside the Libyan embassy.
The U.K. seriously dislikes Libya, but sees opportunity.
A small U.S. installation is bombed, nobody on the
planet points to Libya, but somehow Thatcher gets
Ronald Reagan to bomb Libya in response. In response
to the U.S. bombing, Libya in turn bombs a U.S.
passenger airliner which crashes in Lockerbie
Scotland, killing 270 people.
NOTE: As an official "Thank You," the only man
convicted of the bombing -- the man who supposedly
planted the bomb itself -- was released from his
"Life Sentence" because the Brits figured that if they
didn't he would die in prison.
"If we don't release him from his life sentence he'll
be in prison for the rest of his life."
Not England. It was Scotish law that released him. Nothing to do with
London or The House of Commons and English law.
Actually, I doubt that he was guilty anyway.
