Thank you for the previous help I have received here.

I have seen, of course, images of that rather famous painting of N. done by
his son Cesar. And I have seen where his son was described as being a good
artist. Can anyone tell me more about his career as an artist? Any idea of
whether N. had any leanings in this regard?

Thank you very much.

Apparently he started doing miniatures and things in his old age, more
or less to pass the time. The painting of his dad was getting on for
50 years posthumous!

Not so far as anybody knows.

Interesting that Cesar would do miniatures, and with some stylistic
similarities (through the one portrait I have seen) to the Mughal court art
flourishing at the time so far away.

Any known direct connection to the east for either him or his father, N?

Thank you

'Fraid not!

The nearest would be the Middle East, and then only VERY indirectly,
via the fact that François I had been in league with Suleiman the
Magnificent at one stage, with Muslim forces billeted at Toulon...

But so far as I know neither N nor his son had anything to do with it
-- especially as César wasn't born until years afterwards!

One of N's friends was entitled the 'Admiral of the Eastern Sea', but
again, that only meant the eastern Med.
