Calm urged after N Korea missiles

Russia, China and the US have all called for calm after North Korea
test-fired a series of missiles.
Seven Scud-type ballistic missiles with a range of about 500km (312
miles) were fired in an apparent act of defiance against the US, on 4
July.
Russia and China called on Pyongyang to return to talks, while a US
official urged it not to aggravate tensions.
North Korea is banned from all ballistic missile-related activities
under UN sanctions.
The sanctions were strengthened after the communist nation carried out
a second underground nuclear test in May.
North Korea has launched a number of missiles since the test. On
Thursday it fired four short-range missiles.
'Not helpful'
Saturday's launches came from a base on its east coast. Three were
fired in the morning, a fourth around noon local time and three more
in the afternoon, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The missiles fell into the Sea of Japan, known in South Korea as the
East Sea.
South Korean officials said some of the missiles could have been
medium-range Nodongs - which have the range to strike Japan - but that
their flight distances had been deliberately shortened, Yonhap news
agency said.
Both South Korea and Japan called the launches an "act of
provocation".
A spokesman for the US state department called them "not helpful" and
said North Korea should " refrain from actions that aggravate tensions
and focus on denuclearization talks".
Russia and China called on all parties to show restraint and avoid
actions which could further destabilize the situation, the Russian
Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband condemned the launches and
said it was vital that "tension on the Korean peninsula [was] kept at
manageable levels".
Ties between North Korea and the outside world have grown extremely
tense since it walked away from six-nation talks aimed at ending its
nuclear program.
It subsequently said it would "weaponize" its plutonium stocks and
start enriching uranium, prompting fears that it is working to produce
nuclear warheads small enough to put on missiles - though analysts say
it could take a long time to do so.
On 12 June the UN Security Council approved a resolution allowing
inspection of air, sea and land shipments in and out of North Korea
suspected of carrying banned arms and weapons-related material.
The North has said it will treat any interception of its ships as a
declaration of war.
Some analysts suggest Pyongyang's bellicosity could be linked to
internal issues, amid questions over the health of leader Kim Jong-il
after his apparent stroke last year.
Reports suggest he has named his youngest son as his successor - and
some believe the nuclear and missiles tests could be a show of
strength aimed at securing internal support for his plans.

same with Iran) is talking instead of taking action. If you have a naughty

Because the naughty kid has enough artillery to level Seoul in a
relatively short period of time.
Tho I'm sure N. Korea could be broken fairly quickly, with neutron
bombs and more conventional countermeasures (S Korean soldiers
historically being some of the best fighters in the world0 mass damage
to S. Korean population centers wiould likely be unavoidable.

to make big bangy bombs, then that is their decision; so too Iran, or
any other Nation.

Why is it that the West harshly criticizes military testing when the US, for
example, fires off missiles every year over oceanic regions? One can see
that the North Koreans have shortened the range of their test fires, and no
credible threat has occurred to either S. Korea or Japan, as territorial
integrity has been respected.
As with Iran, any violation of sovereign air space with a LOADED missile
would likely bring on a defensive or retaliatory response, but, to date,

I dont' for a moment believe that these are solely test fires, but are
politically motivated, to help get negotiations that favor them, despite the

so far, minor confrontations and alerts have distilled down to nothing of
significance militarily, but, perhaps, politically strategic in some
instances.
I worry much more about dopes like Bush getting into office, thinking the
apocalypse is a future event, and having such fantastical concepts influence
their use of military force -- the most powerful and destructive on the
planet. I think it is significant and hopeful that Obama has used restraint
and not moved additional US naval forces to the Peninsula, but has beefed up
defensive forces around Hawaii, I understand. Bush would've sent a small
flotilla to the area by now, agitating the situation, with Cheney bellowing
out warnings of a nuke holocaust. The Vandenberg test fire a week ago went
almost unnoticed in the US press, although the USS John McCain's tracking of
a N. Korean cargo ship bound for Indonesia made some news, with McCain, Jr.,
advocating the US board the ship and search it. That was turned down by
Obama who has argued that it would provoke N. Korea, and that no firm
evidence exists of alleged illegal arms contents. Similar concerns about N.
Korean arms shipments resulted in trackings (but no boardings) by the US in
1992 under Bush, Sr., along India's and SE Asias' coastlines, believed bound
for Iran, which was not embargoed under UN law. This time, it could be
simply a ruse to get the US to react for propaganda purposes that'd well
serve N. Korea, not us. We'd look pretty stupid if no arms were found, and
since our intel isn't exactly perfect (LOL!)...well, I think Obama's doing
the right thing.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, California - The Air Force successfully launched
an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile Monday from the
California coast to an area in the Pacific Ocean some 4,200 miles away.
The ICBM was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Santa Barbara at
3:01 a.m. and carried three unarmed re-entry vehicles to their targets near
the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, said Lt. Raymond Geoffroy.
The missile, configured with a National Nuclear Security Administration Test
Assembly, was launched under the direction of the 576th Flight Test
Squadron, whose members installed tracking and command destruct systems on
it to collect data and meet safety requirements.
"It's really something when you see a truly outstanding team come together,"
Col. David Buck, 30th Space Wing commander, said in a written statement. "I
couldn't think of a better team to demonstrate the awesome capability of our
ICBM fleet."
On clear mornings the missiles in such tests can be seen as far away as Los
Angeles 140 miles away, but a foggy coast Monday made the missile difficult
to see even in the immediate area, Geoffroy said.
The Air Force says the launch was an operational test to check the weapon
system's reliability and accuracy, and the data will be used by United
States Strategic Command planners and Department of Energy laboratories.
"These are dangerous times we're living in right now," Lt. Col. Lesa K.
Toler, commander of the 576th, said in a statement. "It's extremely
important our combatant commander has the capabilities he needs to perform
the mission of fighting and winning our nation's wars."
