"owner" of ECW, is NOT married to Triple H. Instead, she is the steady
girlfriend/manager/business partner of "Action" Jack Hunter.
On Raw: Stephanie returned to Raw after 6 weeks off, introduced as the
new "owner" of ECW. AJ resigned as Deputy Commissioner, but as the
Action Hero's about to discover, even though these two moves were
separate and independent of each other, not too many guys will believe
that.
Smackdown is in Birmingham. All ad breaks are 2:00 in length, and of
course we eliminate the recap from Raw.
8:00:30 (EDT): Vince McMahon makes a deal with Undertaker.
8:01:45: Jack Hunter enters the arena, much the same way that Booker T
did a week ago, having to go through a gauntlet of WWF wrestlers. At
the end of this gauntlet, though, are Billy Gunn, and Hardcore & Crash
Holly. Hardcore speaks first.
HH: You've got some nerve walking in here tonight.
AJ: Whoa! You got a problem, Softcore?
BG: First, you resign as Deputy Commissioner. Half an hour later,
Stephanie shows up as the new owner of ECW. Everyone knows the two of
you are tighter than a pair of jeans, so it's gotta be a case of one
hand washing the other, right?
AJ: Trust me, guys. I had no idea. She's been on "special assignment"
for nearly 2 months, and even I didn't know what that was about. We
all found out on Monday, it appears. As for moi, I made my own
decision. I'm a vigilante at heart, after all.
CH: What's a vigilante?
BG: A vigilante works above the law, but is also often considered an
outlaw. Isn't that right, Jack?
AJ: Check your facts before you say something you'll regret, Pop-Gunn.
BG: We'll see about that tonight, Jack. In the ring!
AJ: You're on!
Opening interview is trimmed to 8:30. After Tazz-Hardcore, and after
Stone Cold Steve Austin does his best Bob Dylan, we add this scene.
8:27: Stephanie returns to her dressing room to find a set of
nameplates on the door:
MCMAHON-HUNTER ENTERPRISES, LLC
STEPHANIE M. MCMAHON, PRESIDENT-C.E.O.
JACK R. HUNTER, VICE PRESIDENT-C.O.O.
The plates are in green and black, embossed with chrome lettering.
Steph walks in to find Jack adjusting the collar of his jacket.
SM: That was fast.
AJ: I ordered the plates on-line after the show on Monday. Had 'em
FedExed here. (in reality, the plates had been ordered on 7/5, and
were ready for use in time for the taping) You like?
SM: Like? I love it.
AJ: Speaking of likes and loves, there's you, honey. Gimme a little
spin. (she extends her hand, he takes it, and she pirouettes into his
arms, and they kiss) As the guy in the chewing gum commercials says,
it looks good on you (referring to the hat matching Steph's outfit).
SM (giggling): Ohhh, Jack. (pauses) I heard you ran into a little
trouble earlier.
AJ: Yeah, not a lot, though. Just Gunn and the Hollys jumping to
conclusions.
SM: Everyone thinks that the decisions we made Monday are
inter-linked, when they're not. It stuns me that you'd even give up
being a deputy commissioner.
AJ: With all the chaos around here, I'm not comfortable having that
title. Situation like this calls more for vigilante justice. Anyway,
honey, I need a small favor from you.
SM: Name it, babe.
AJ: Gather the ECW troops, except for Heyman. He's only told one side
of the story. I'd like to address the fellas on other issues.
SM: Done. You've got something in mind?
AJ: Our little enterprise is back on the frontline, isn't it? Let's
show them what teamwork is all about.
Rhyno-Kane ends differently. Cordell McShayne (Shane Cordell, Jack's
cousin) turns up, having just been appointed to fill the vacancy
created by Jack's resignation. The fast count is disallowed, and ref
Nick Patrick is removed, replaced by WWF ref Mike Sparks. Rhyno wins
anyway, via the gore, 2:30 into the restart. Shane McMahon is not
happy, but soon discovers that it's public knowledge about the
familial link between the cousins. Meanwhile, Team ECW gathers in a
locker room, as AJ delivers a speech about seizing opportunities. He
cites the Dudleys' 4 WWF tag titles in nearly 18 months, only one of
which lasted more than a month (the 1st one). He cites Rhyno being the
last ECW World Champ. He notes Justin Credible being dissed at WWF-NY
on Heat by spotlight hogging X-Pac. All 10 have the skills to compete
for the WWF's major titles, and AJ also cites Rhyno's demand for a
title shot at Austin being denied by William Regal. "What are they
afraid of?", AJ thunders. "US!", comes the chorus.
JR & Michael Cole refer to AJ's motivational speech as "the other shoe
dropping", leaving fans to think that AJ has turned, but in truth he's
doing the best he can to remain neutral. MHE is back up front, and the
possibilities for the ECW team away from the ring are endless (more on
that in our next chapter). AJ & Stephanie are a team in and out of the
ring. Partners as well as lovers. Nothing, it seems, will break their
bond.
For Powerslam Radio (existing in our continuity only): This week,
Kevin Kelly & Howard Finkel, the hosts of Byte This!, fill in while
Steph & AJ are in Albany. Scheduled: an announcers forum with JR,
Michael Cole, Jon Coachman, Scott Hudson, and---just added---Joey
Styles, the definitive voice of ECW. Linda McMahon is also a guest,
plus a mini-concert with Lillian Garcia & the Starlight Orchestra.
Jack & Steph will return 7/21 with a 3-hr. Invasion preview show.
Next: What the future could hold for ECW under the MHE umbrella.

David, I guess you haven't been following this series.
"Action" Jack Hunter, the artist formerly known as Manhunter, is my
creation, a non-pareil vigilante whose mission, until recently, had
been to uphold the law. Presently, he's at a crossroads, since the
woman he loves, Stephanie, is aligned with ECW, and he values his
feelings toward her moreso than his stance on law & order. Yes, it's
possible that Jack will be more of a straight-up heel, but it all
rides on how the fallout from Invasion shakes out. For now, Jack is a
subtle heel that still gets a good pop from the crowd because of his
own brand of charisma.
FWIW, I felt that marrying Stephanie off to Triple H was a mistake,
and in my continuity, this was discontinued on 12/20/99. Steph & Jack
began dating two months later, more by design than anything else.

Close, but no cigar. We really haven't delved into any bedroom drama
between Jack & Steph so far, and I don't think that's in the cards.
FWIW, I designed Jack to be as different from me as possible. If you
want to think he's my "alter-ego", that's OK, but Jack's done things I
haven't. He's been in college and served in the Navy, and I haven't
done either.
