at least if the DEA has it's way.

It would seem that the concerns that were expressed here in the group recently
about the Safeway, etc. gathering detailed purchase information for their
own internal use might be the least of our privacy worries.

According to AP and CNN, our beloved Drug Enforcement Agency, the 90's
incarnation of McCarthyism (sp?) is subpoenaing the records for companies
that sell 'high-tech' gardening equipment--things like grow lights,
hydroponic equipment, etc. The Feds believe that this little fishing
expedition will, accoridng to spokesman Bill Ruzzamenti, "identify and
put out of business those who would commercially cultivate marijuana."

Wonderful. Now, just because I bought some grow tubes and fertilizer
for our aquarium, there is the (admittly very remote) possibility that
the DEA will show up on my doorstep.

Anyone get the feeling that its time to buy an island somewhere and set
up your own country? I'm getting really down-hearted at the way things
are going here lately.

Don't count on that helping any. Given the U.S. government's penchant
for tracking down "drug dealers" inside established foreign countries
(e.g., Mexico), and the Coast Guard and FCC's lack of respect for
international treaties on ships located in international waters (e.g.,
the pirate radio stations broadcasting to New York), I suspect that your
little island would become the next Bikini Atoll...

This may cause an unexpected backlash in the form of an upsurge
in cash-only, "underground economy" transactions. Thus we, as
taxpayers, are subsidizing one group of feds (DEA) to conduct operations
that encourage clandestine financial transactions, and another (IRS)
charged with suppressing such transactions. Is there *really* intellignet
life in Washington, D.C.?

Another "tool" used by the DEA is to scan electric bills to see
who fits the pattern of usage typical for a grow house. Better
be prepared to bypass the meter.

The local paper, the _St. Louis Post-Dispatch_ recently ran an article that
said that a local police department stop at several hotels every night and
pick up a copy of the list of registered guests. According to the police,
they had a drug dealer "profile" that they would check the list against.

The police chief felt there was nothing wrong with this, because it was the
hotel's list and the police were just asking for the cooperation of the hotel.

Slightly different, but related:

We've had a rash of 'anti-porn' raids on comic stores in Ontario,
and one of the cute tricks the cops used was to raid a major Canadian
comics distributor, to find out from their records which stores bought
what. God forbid people should read such corrupting comics as 'Melody':(

The night after the CFP conference ended, I tried to book a hotel room
in Redlands (red-something near Palo Alto), CA and they told me that I
could not rent the room unless I showed them my driver's license. I
refused since they wanted to put all the info in the computer. They then
accused me of trying to avoid detection by my wife. (And I did not even
know I was married. :-) ). They said it was a city ordinance. I left
and got a room in another city and a different chain. BTW, they really
thought something was up, the manager told the employee to call all of
the chain's hotels in the area and alert them. Believe me, after the
B.S. they pulled, I would never rent one of their rooms.

How about giving us the name of the hotel so we can avoid them?

Umm, it probably wasn't Redlands, if it was near Palo Alto. Redlands is
roughly 450 miles from Palo Alto.

Probably Redwood City, a bit north of Palo Alto.
