Revealed: Hundreds of words to avoid using online if you don't want the
government spying on you (and they include 'pork', 'cloud' and 'Mexico')

* Department of Homeland Security forced to release list following
freedom of information request

* Agency insists it only looks for evidence of genuine threats to the
U.S. and not for signs of general dissent

Revealing: A list of keywords used by government analysts to scour the
internet for evidence of threats to the U.S. has been released under the
Freedom of Information Act

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of
keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and
online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al
Qaeda', 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly
innocent words like 'pork', 'cloud', 'team' and 'Mexico'.

Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds
new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the
internet searching for domestic and external threats.

The words are included in the department's 2011 'Analyst's Desktop
Binder' used by workers at their National Operations Center which
instructs workers to identify 'media reports that reflect adversely on
DHS and response activities'.

Department chiefs were forced to release the manual following a House
hearing over documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act
lawsuit which revealed how analysts monitor social networks and media
organisations for comments that 'reflect adversely' on the government.

However they insisted the practice was aimed not at policing the
internet for disparaging remarks about the government and signs of
general dissent, but to provide awareness of any potential threats.

As well as terrorism, analysts are instructed to search for evidence of
unfolding natural disasters, public health threats and serious crimes
such as mall/school shootings, major drug busts, illegal immigrant
busts.

The list has been posted online by the Electronic Privacy Information
Center - a privacy watchdog group who filed a request under the Freedom
of Information Act before suing to obtain the release of the documents.

In a letter to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on
Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, the centre described the choice of
words as 'broad, vague and ambiguous'.

They point out that it includes 'vast amounts of First Amendment
protected speech that is entirely unrelated to the Department of
Homeland Security mission to protect the public against terrorism and
disasters.'

A senior Homeland Security official told the Huffington Post that the
manual 'is a starting point, not the endgame' in maintaining situational
awareness of natural and man-made threats and denied that the government
was monitoring signs of dissent.

However the agency admitted that the language used was vague and in need
of updating.

Spokesman Matthew Chandler told website: 'To ensure clarity, as part of
... routine compliance review, DHS will review the language contained in
all materials to clearly and accurately convey the parameters and
intention of the program.'

Why is it that they think that they can get all spellings of Al Queda
right and yet can't seem to spell category?

It is. no such thing as "dedicated". Even the distributed attacks
eventually wind down.

There's more than enough evidence to send Dustin Cook to prison.

What I find uber-hilarious is that he fancies himself the super-sleuth
and yet obviously has no understanding of evidence, evidence gathering or
the burden of proof. Or even a basic understanding of the law.

Anything he's ever offered as 'supporting evidence' (I've never actually
seen any) would be laughed out of court. That is if the authorities were
so distracted by tears of laughter they accidentally stamped the form
'SEND FOR TRIAL' instead of placing it in its correct file drawer- the
round one.

I've had a taste of the kanagroo court system in TN. I realize I have
rights on paper, but that doesn't always equate to actual rights in the
courtroom. So this, surprises me none. Our government is good at breaking
it's own rules.

Wrong. You *know* I'm bright. You made the mistake of thinking you could
force my hand or otherwise intimidate me into doing your bidding. You
posted what you thought was a google streetmap view of my house. You
were wrong. HHI posted what is the actual address to your recently moved
into home as well as your real telephone number. You can't even seek
legal options for that as you provided the world your information when
you registered the website yourself. [g]

You have no legal recourse, David. You may look over your shoulder
wondering when someone you've pissed off online has decided to come pay
you a visit. Isn't it fun? That's what you had in mind for me, David.
Don't you find it sweet poetic justice that's exactly what happened to
*you*? I do.

I promised it would get worse, right? Have I shown you yet that I make
good on those? Don't worry, I will. :)

Dustin J Cook typed into the search box, here, tells anyone where *you*
are, dear boy!

You have made it plain in the alt.2600 newsgroup that you *are* involved

and you are a marked man. Are you *sure* you aren't going to that prison
cell?

So... the US understands evidence - except some parts don't.
Yup - complete and utter bollocks.
I can't be arsed with caging people without trial, or forcing people to
accept short prison sentences because the evidence isn't strong - etc
etc

An interesting fairytale way of looking at things. Innocence always

You saying that isn't so ?
According to the evidence you provided - it is.

Nah - we have a sensible, well tried justice here. The poor go to
prison, the rich get away with it. You should try it sometime.

I didn't even use the word evidence in my original post. I simply said
that whats on the books isn't always how it plays out in the courtroom.

Sometimes the cops/judge are friends (drinking buddies) and one owes the
other a small favor. That illegal stop just became legal. As does the ill
gotten goods gained from it.

Think it doesn't work this way? If you do, you have very limited/no
experience with encountering law enforcement in the south.

Not that all police are bad, I'm sure some are decent people. OTH, The
badge and gun gives some a very large head and they use the awesome power.

Watched the whole thing a couple of years ago, mate. Very educational.

I have no wish to encounter any yankie cops. As you and I know, most
are bent. So much for evidence eh?

Yup - fat cunts who shoot rather than get off their huge arses. Thank
fuck we don't allow ordinary police to have guns over here.

Can't blame you. :)

It's gotten to the point where we had a non lethal use of force slogan
for awhile. Still do in some areas. Put your drink down....

Okay.. last chance.. to put the drink down.

"Don't tase me bro!"

> Thank fuck we don't allow ordinary police to have guns over here.

I've wondered about that. I find myself asking... would I stop for one
if they told me to. Being as they have no gun to shoot me in the back or
leg with. Seems they do have tasers tho. That could put a damper on my
otherwise sunshiny day.

Dustin J Cook, typed into the search box, here, tells anyone where he
lives: http://www.usa-people-search.com/Results.aspx?view=PE

He is number 9. ;-)

He *is* being watched - believe me!

And why the fuck would I be interested in Dustin's home address? He's
reliable and trustworthy and has never done me (or anyone who didn't
deserve it) any harm.

Whatever. I'm not fucking interested.

He may not notice the effects for a while, Dustin. He's somewhere on an
English inland waterway, it would seem. Or so he would have us believe.

You don't have the required permit for the weapons you've mentioned in
public on usenet (as you like to say, it's all a matter of factual
record) as having possession of. That has mandatory time. Tsk tsk.

And well, heh, electrical fires start sometimes outside the home itself

Wrong as usual. In some cases, probably doesn't even matter. Won't in
yours. :)

When are you coming back to shore David? I hear you have a welcoming
party. You have got to know by now that some of us aren't just bsing
you. Your information was provided in shinedown cds and, you are going
to be talking to the police when you come ashore.

Well, We've both derailed this topic into a pile of stinky poo. I look
forward to more discussion in alt.2600 where anything is on topic it
seems.

LOL. You fire on someone over here, Dustin, and you get arrested. No
matter what the circumstances.

You also stand a good chance of serving time, whatever the circumstances.

Nope. The only part of the UK in which a FAC can be issued for the
explicit purpose of self-defence is Northern Ireland. Understandably.

Conditions of a FAC stipulate that firearms must be kept in a strong
locker bolted to a wall or floor or both, unloaded and with the
ammunition separate at all times. The police will inspect this locker
before they finally grant the FAC, and even after that they'll do spot
checks without notice.

If a FAC holder has time to go and unlock his gun locker, load his gun
and shoot someone, by law the act cannot have been anything but
premeditated, mate. Confiscation of firearms for ever, withdrawal of FAC
with zero chance of ever getting it back, and a prison sentence is what
awaits anyone who does something like that.

In short, over here if you shoot someone, you're in deep, deep shit.

And rightly so, IMO.

I couldn't give you a definitive answer, mate. It would depend on the
exact circumstances of the particular incident. A quick search tells me
that such a case may not exist. If you can find one, please let me know.

> Is there anyone that has been convicted

The nearest thing I can think of is this:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_%28farmer%29>

What muddies the waters in this case is that Martin had a shotgun
illegally, then he shot the intruders as they ran away.
