It continues to surprise me that so many people post to these public
forums and include what appears to be valid email addresses. I bet
the Spammers are very appreciative ... money in the bank!

I have used one address on usenet and some email forums for over ten
years. I also have six other e-mail addresses that are redirected to
that main address. Anything that is sent directly to the main address
is filtered out. The result is that I am using a valid address but I
don't get any spam.

Points well taken. However, do you think those Users who post "how do
I turn on the computer" kinds of questions understand your responses?
Simply, they do not. I work with 30-40 a day who would not understand
your post. For example, they ask "what is a POP3 ?" How can I filter
an email or a Usenet post? And so it goes.

Hi,
I think it depends on what services your ISP provides. My ISP has
contracted a 3rd party that filters out virus infected and other
junk mail. I can check to see if any of the filtered junk is
legitimate (usually none), then I can sign onto the server,
check the mail that got thru, and delete anything that I don't
want before I download it to my PC. Works for me, and I'm proud
to say my email address is genuine. :-)

I'm sure your right, and there's no way you can determine

if my email is genuine or not until you try it.

But at the end of the day, these newbies will have to learn

what to do just like you and I and heaps of other people did.

That's the way of the World Wide Web.

My posts on Usenet involve only a blowoff Hotmail email address (which I
check) and never, ever my primary email address.

ROTFL!

No offense, but are you aware that email and Usenet both predate the
"Web" by many years? The "Web" is not the same thing as the Internet.

I don't use the "Web" to send email. Nor am I using the "Web" to post this
message. I also use one of my regular email addresses in my postings
without bothering to munge it. I do admit to having one simple filter on
this email account though, which has taken care of all of the spam being
sent to it.

Different strokes for different folks. I'd rather have my email address
easily available to anyone who wishes to contact me, without forcing them
to jump through hoops trying to figure out how to properly demunge the
address.

Include "spam(trap)key" somewhere in the
body of any email to avoid spam filters.

Well Rick, it just goes to show we're not

always as smart as we'd like to be.

I thought that emails were a product of the Internet

which is another word for World Wide Web.

I smell another <rotfl> coming ... :-)

As Rick said, the "Internet" and the "World Wide Web" are NOT the
same. The WWW is just one part of the Internet.

Best to think of WWW, email, usenet & IRC,
as riding on top of the Internet.

Ah, YoKenny, you beat me to it!

Samantha, why do you want to raise the hackles of the people you are
asking for help? This is not normally a good plan. But ... suit
yourself. By the way, it's called "netiquette" and you can google
that one yourself.
