Or is SpywareBlaster even necessary with IE8?
Spyware Blaster is a very handy extra to have in your arsenal. My main
browser is Firefox, but I do have to use IE8 on occasion. I have
experienced no problems Spyware Blaster.

Would you mind sharing the URL of a site(s) or kinds of sites that you
"do have to use IE" for? I haven't had a Windows computer here for over
three years and have not found any where IE(anything) was actually
required.
Thanks for your consideration.

Presumably Windows Update (unless a person is using IE Tab)?
I don't find that necessary. I've worked cleaning the Windows PCs of
numerous friends, and the auto-update thingy seems to do it all without
the use of a browser.

One I have to use is to pay my Verizon wireless bill. Another is to
access my checking account at my local bank.

Can you examine the pages in question to see exactly what it is that
appears to be IE-centric? Have you tried the sites using a User Agent
Switcher such as this for Firefox?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59
..or Opera's "Mask As Internet Explorer" choice? This choice is
available by Right-Click on page, select Edit Site Preferences, go to
Network tab, choose "Mask as Internet Explorer" from the drop-down. Note
that the other choice of "Identify As..." still leaves the word Opera in
the UA String, so be sure to pick "Mask as..."
My own bank (a local credit union) web site works just fine using any
browser (without masking), and does not even require JavaScript to be
enabled.
Be sure to switch back after you leave your banking site, so you don't
continue to inflate IE statistics everywhere else.

I do use IE View Lite when I come across a site that doesn't work
properly with Firefox. Countrywide Bank was one, but I moved my money
out of there some months ago.
Another is Citi Cards. They periodically display an offer that doesn't
show in Firefox, so I can't click a "no thanks" button and go on to my
account. I have to switch to IE to display the ad and click it off, as
Firefox simply displays a blank screen. This was happening often enough
that I configured IE View Lite to always launch Citi in IE.
Some of the Intuit "subsites" don't work properly with Firefox either,
though I can't recall them off the top of my head.
Occasionally I find a site where I can do everything in Firefox, but the
buttons to submit info (or something similar) simply don't function.
When this happens, IE View Lite comes to the rescue.
I have installed the "User Agent Switcher" addon you mention in another
msg, and it looks interesting. I've disabled IE View Lite and will give
UAS a whirl.
One other thought, is that I don't use plain vanilla Firefox, so my
problem with various sites such as Citi may not be Firefox, rather
Adblock Plus. Still there aren't a lot of sites I use which require IE.
Just enough to be annoying and make me glad I have the extra
protection of Spyware Blaster.
And yes, I do use IE8 for Windows Update.
Thanks for the UAS pointer.

Margaret

I can believe that one. One of my clients uses Quickbooks Enterprise in
his store, and because of it, I can't switch his network from Windows to
Linux...

That could be the reason. I have come across a couple of sites over the
years where, if the ad was not served, nothing else on the page would
continue.
One author who was confronted with this stated, "If you won't read my
ads and give me the chance to make money, then the hell with you." In
fact, his pages would re-direct you to another page that stated just
that, in very terse terms.
Let us know if you get any of them working with the UA masking. Could be
valuable info for others.
Fair enough.
But it's similar to driving with a manual or automatic transmission. I
don't mind visiting Windows Update twice a month, and I just like having
control. Plus, it's one fewer program always running in the background.
A while back, I recall having performance issues with regard to
wuauclt.exe (IIRC). Turning off Automatic Updates got rid of that
problem at that time.
I suppose I could try AU again (just for the notifications, of course).
If there are any performance issues you are aware of and how they can be
addressed, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Heehee. I used to drive a stick shift too, but in my retirement years I
switched to an automatic. <g>

I never had an issue (nor did my clients) with the automatic way.

Sorry, I can't answer about performance. It's now too long since I've
used Windows on any of my computers.

I run FF 3.5 with adblock plus 1.1.1, and have no problem with Citibank
sites ...
