Its own protocol. What a cool idea.

It's the third generation anonymity protocol.
Type I Cypherpunk
Type II Mixmaster
Type III Mixminion (MMTP)
Mixminion differs from the earlier two in that it uses a dedicated
transport protocol (Mixminion Transport Protocol) instead of SMTP to
route messages between remailer nodes.
Unfortunately development on Type-III is currently stalled as its primary
developer is currently focused on Tor (www.torproject.org). More info
can be found at www.mixminion.net.

Well, mixminion was easy to install and the docs are pretty good. I
don't know enough about this to have an opinion. Is there an
advantage to mixminion compared to Tor? I ran Tor for awhile and
shut it down because it just seemed too greedy on how much resources
it needed in a default config.

The two (Tor and mixminion) aren't comparable. Totally different things, so
it's hard to say what's advantageous.
If you've just started running a mixminion server, I believe you have to appeal
to the mixminion gods to have your server included in the directory.
Yeah, and you're a super-cool geekaroid if you use it. Unfortunately some
things are broken with it and development sorta went kaflooie.
I'm an atheist.

Tor is a whole different beast. Mixminion only does anonymous email in
the same way as Mixmaster. On paper Mixminion is superior to Mixmaster
but because development stopped on it, there isn't the user population
to provide decent anonymity. The lack of pinger software doesn't help
as pingers generate a lot of covering traffic. There are also a couple
of unsolved bugs and finally, most of the servers aren't using pooled
mix algorithms as they're running in a test mode.
If you've set up a Mixminion node, you'll need to let Nick Mathewson
know so he can add it to the directory service. Easiest way to do that
is to join the Mailing list: http://archives.seul.org/mixminion/dev/
Server stats can be found at:
