Gallagher <g-gal...@cableinet.co.uk> writes
Your best starting place would be to look at some actual art - in
academic terms its bad form just to paraphrase books. A good place to
start would be Tate Modern (which is free!)- here you will see famous
modernist works - Andre (the bricks!) Judd ... and more post modern -
without giving too much away you should notice the po-mo work is
different, incorporates humour, personal references - wit. So its not
necessary about the date of the work. Spend sometime making notes - they
even have study areas, with reference material, you could then track
down bibliographies and articles about the artists work you have seen.
Think about what's happening in the minimalist stuff - 144 pieces of
copper - and compare that to say the grand piano which falls from the
ceiling (po-mo imo) - better the serra two pieces of steel propped
against the wall (modernist) Both use the concept of weight... one is
being funny - ironic amusing... also the tate web site offers a virtual
tour.

One other question you could consider is the role of the tate modern
itself as an installation - is it modern or post-modern?

hope this is of help
