I was not able to serve in the military, I tried twice, wound up
with a 4F classification but many of my contemporaries did whatever
they could to avoid the service/draft. Now, in their later years
there are many who never served who are claiming to be military
veterans. I guess they're trying to impress someone or get free drinks.

Well, kind of...there's a few things you ought to know before you go...
You may have heard of Bakersfield, the place with all the Hell's
Angels, Banditos and assorted misfits. Well, Taft is their home
away from home, a place to relax, sort of a 'beach front'
resort.
But no one gets to Taft by chance or accident. It's not on the
way to any place, just out there at the end of the road with the sand
and the scorpions and the mountains. Get off the interstate and head
east. Yes, there is a sign.
Taft is a gritty little desert town. It really is in the middle of
nowhere, made up of bikers, burn-outs, ex-cons, and survivors of the
federal witness relocation program.
Gunner lives in Taft surrounded by bikers, burn-outs, ex-cons,
and survivors of the federal witness relocation program.
A little bit about Taft. There is no Taft Tourism Bureau. Well, the
building is there but all concerned disappeared after the investigation.
And the town paper moved and is now printed in Sacramento and flown in
once a week. It seems the reporters were also in that investigation.
The cop in Taft works 8 to 5 Monday through Friday (Taft can't afford
weekend rates) and on weekends he hangs out with Gunner.
Anyway, Taft doesn't need cops because its patrolled by coyotes and
buzzards, but they do have to be fed, always on the lookout for dinner,
buried or unburied.
It's said that a few sunny days and starry nights in the desert
doesn't leave enough of a body to identify.
You'll know you've arrived when you cross the railroad tracks
and see the "Last Chance" saloon on the right. Just ask for 'Butch'.

after he passed, us guys who knew him would help out his aged

Tom had received during his tour of duty. She never knew, none
of us knew. I wonder how many veterans there are out there who
are just like my friend Tom.

There are two sides of that equation. Putting a reactionary half-wit

Military experience, especially combat, is but one of many parameters
important to electing the President of the United States but not the
only, or most important, issue.

That is one attribute, loyalty, which is almost impossible to adequately
communicate to anyone who hasn't experienced being a military team member.
Many vets do not care to relive war experiences. My dad didn't share his
with anyone until terminally ill. Then he told me stories that made my
hair stand on end, atrocities by the Japanese that are almost
indescribable.
In my experience few veterans speak of their service. Those who brag are
more often than not full of shit.

Most came home, got married, took a job, raised a family etc etc
Just regular folks. Nam was just a sidetrack in their lives. A goodly
number of them may say they served, when asked, few will give any
details. When they came home...being a vet was considered to be a very
bad thing by much of the public..least the stupid mouthy ones..and they
tended to simply put their experiences in a valpac, stuff it in a closet
and try to forget they ever put it on. Years later they will drag it
out, blow off the dust and remember.
We lost 55,000 killed in action..and another 65,000 who died because of
angst, anger, stupidity, Agent Orange and so forth, after they came
home. A significant number suffered PTSD...but most of them have
overcome it, or come to terms with it by now. Its been 40 yrs for most
of them, shrug. And when you were a 20 yr old in the Green
Machine...life was much different for the 13 months..or more you spent
as a cog or gear in the Machine, then it is today.
On the other hand...its been very much the same for every veteran of
every war America has gone through. I recently helped bury a gentleman,
just a regular guy. Had a wife, large family, grand kids ..and great
grand kids, owned a business for many years, retired, farted around with
guns, horses, fishing etc etc. Just a nice guy who will be missed.
And helping the widow arrainge for the funeral, she handed me a box that
she had been told all of her marraige to stay out of. It contained a
.45, two loaded mags, a Congressional Medal of Honor, 2 DSCs, a silver
and bronze star and 3 purple fuckups. When I showed them to her..and
explained to her what they were..she was stunned and shocked. When I
read the citations to her, what they were awarded for...she called all
the kids and grand kids over, and had me read em the cites and hold up
the ol mans awards and explain to them, what they were for.
Seems the old man was one evil son of a bitch (good thing) and had taken
many many enemies lives, saved a bunch of his own men and had been
wounded 3 times. Yet when he left the Machine in '46..he became the
really smart, really nice guy they all knew and grew up with. And never
discussed his history with any of them.
I hunted with him for years, knew that he had been in the military..knew
that he had seen combat..just from his attitude and movements and his
attitude..but he had never discussed anything about it with me in all
those years. And I never asked..knowing if it were something I should
know..he would have told me.
And he was/is typical of many if not most of the vets Ive known. The
reasons for reticence are myrid..shrug. If you have a friend or
relative of WW2/Korea/Vietnam age...ask em gently if they ever
served..and ask em why they dont talk about it. The reasons will
suprise you, make you happy, make you sad..shrug..but they
will...enlighten you.
