FEDERALIST YEAR-END PERSPECTIVE
This first year of the millennium has been a climactic one, in which
recent political and cultural commentary repeatedly reminded our
nation that "everything has changed." But our readers can rest assured
that The Federalist will never waver from our dedication to the
principles of our nation's founding, and our commitment to providing
reporting and analysis of news, policy and opinion in the light of
those principles.
In review of this year past, here are a few snapshots from our 2001
editions.
1. Top of the fold...
The biggest story of the year arrived September 11th, when
international terrorism visited the World Trade Center again, claiming
the lives of thousands of our countrymen. Cells of terrorists linked
to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network hijacked four commercial
jetliners, flying two into the twin towers of the World Trade Center
and a third into the Pentagon, while brave patriots on the fourth
fought their captors -- losing their lives in a Pennsylvania field
rather than at the terrorists' intended target in our nation's
capital. They became the fist combat casualties of our war against
Jihadistan.
The year began with the final days of Bill Clinton's presidency,
during which the Prevaricator-in-Chief's last scandal in office,
Pardongate (granting pardons for campaign cash), played out. Lingering
bitterness over the close and hard-fought presidential election
between George W. Bush and Albert Arnold Gore provided ample
opportunity for the Leftmedia to again demonstrate just how wrong they
could be -- in this case, predicting that President Bush would be
dogged by contentiousness and resentment during his term of office,
and that he lacked the stature of a Commander-in-Chief.
In fact, the year laid bare stark revelations of the media's proneness
to mistaking evanescent symbolic displays for real actions, in their
clear preference for Mr. Clinton, as well as their perennial failure
to recognize the harbingers of effective leadership -- including Mr.
Bush's quiet qualities of strength of character and prudence in
judgment. Not least in that prudential judgment has been Bush's
selection of such administration leaders as Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld, who, along with Attorney General John Ashcroft, have proven
nothing less than Reaganesque in their stalwart, skillful cabinet
performances.
Though Mr. Bush has advanced some dubious national legislation (most
notably his education and faith initiatives), he demonstrated early on
that substance and character trump symbolism. Accordingly, The
Federalist, just one month into President Bush's first term and amid
all the hand-wringing about the legitimacy of his election, became the
first national publication to predict he will win reelection by a
landslide in 2004 -- just as he won his second term as Governor of
Texas. (And as our friend Dick Cheney has indicated he will not be on
the ticket in '04, Bush-Rumsfeld is looking like a good fit!)
Our estimation of his leadership ability was borne out in the hours,
days and weeks following 9-11, as he established himself a most
remarkable national and world leader. The foreign policy of the United
States was forever changed by his moral clarity in declaring, "If you
harbor a terrorist, you're a terrorist. If you feed a terrorist,
you're a terrorist." This marked a sea change in policy, from the
Clinton era of lip service, to the Bush test of results orientation
and performance.
For a man discounted at the year's start as lacking gravitas, Mr. Bush
has proven to be long on substance. And the year 2001 could rightly be
cast as a study in symbolism versus substance. A preference for
symbolism invited the 9-11 terrorist strikes, but the substance of the
American people and our president's leadership have answered the
assault on our nation with forthright vigor and clarity. We have yet
to identify a single Leftist in the halls of Congress who is willing
to suggest that our nation would be better served at this juncture by
"that other guy."
The Satanic messengers of 9-11 estimated they could bring the United
States to submission by attacking what they believed were the greatest
symbols of our nation. The World Trade Center and Pentagon are
symbols, but they do not constitute our substance -- as Satan's
messengers have discovered, and will continue to discover. We are "one
nation, under God," and we will remain His!
2. Quote of the Year
"Let those who say that we must understand the reasons for terrorism
come with me to the thousands of funerals we're having in New York
City -- thousands -- and explain those insane, maniacal reasons to the
children who will grow up without fathers and mothers and to the
parents who have had their children ripped from them for no reason at
all. On this issue -- terrorism -- the United Nations must draw a
line. The era of moral
relativism between those who practice or condone terrorism, and those
nations who stand up against it, must end." --New York City Mayor Rudy
Giuliani addressing the UN in early October. The UN always obfuscated
with "moral relativism" during the Cold War between free nations and
those under Communist enslavement, so a change during the conflict
with terrorism would be both unexpected and welcome!
On December 23rd, after much conjecture that 9-11 terror mastermind
Osama bin Laden would be named Time magazine's "Person of the Year,"
Giuliani was tapped for that recognition -- a choice The Federalist
considers excellent. Giuliani's response echoed his earlier words: "I
want to say that I was very humbled and very moved by the selection by
Time magazine. ... I believe the people of the city of New York were
selected as the people of the year, because of the very brave and
heroic way in which they responded from the first moment to the worst
attack on the United States ever in our history."
Time's managing editor Jim Kelly commented on the ultimate rejection
of bin Laden, "He is not a larger-than-life figure with broad
historical sweep.... He is smaller than life, a garden-variety
terrorist...."
3. The BIG Lie...
"It's amazing to me that there is the intransigence on the other side
when it comes to helping laid-off workers." --Senate Demo Leader Tom
Daschle
"For too long, Republicans have stopped our efforts to help the
economy and help the people who have been hardest hit." --Tom Daschle
on another occasion
"The federal government is not a toy, and checks from the U.S.
Treasury should not be used as political props." --DNC Chairman Terry
McAuliffe on the tax rebate checks returned to taxpayers by
Republican-backed legislation
"These are difficult and unusual times, but we must not run up the
national debt with risky, unfair tax measures that won't help the
economy recover. To make matters worse, the Senate Republican
leadership is now taking its marching orders from the radical House
Republicans." --Demo Sen. Harry Reid (You know what "radical" means --
willing to return overpayments to hard-pressed taxpayers!)
"The bottom line is this is George Bush's recession." --Rep. Nita
Lowey, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (This
about the economic downturn that began on Bill Clinton's watch --
arguably as a result of his domestic policies....)
4. The "Dumb and Dumber" Department
In early October, The Federalist noted, just when you thought it was
safe to go back in the air comes this revelation: "What percent?
Eighty percent of the people checking for terrorists at Dulles Airport
are not American citizens? What is wrong with this picture?" --Rep.
Harold Rogers (R-Kentucky) to Kenneth Mead, inspector general for the
Department of Transportation, who replied, "I think it's about eighty
percent. It may be somewhat more."
5. The Last Word
"We aren't running out of targets -- Afghanistan is." --Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld responding to a reporter's inquiry about the
reduction of military strikes against Jihadistan early in the
campaign. (Interestingly, Mr. Rumsfeld's Pentagon briefings have been
termed Washington's "Best Show in Town," and a fond caricature of the
good Secretary of War graced a year-end cover of National Review,
posing him as this war's simulacrum of WWII poster pinup Betty
Grable.)
Even that bastion of Leftist "humor," NBC's Saturday Night Live, aired
a parody of a Rumsfeld press briefing, poking fun at the stupidity of
questions posed by reporters:
-- A female reporter: 'With our military campaign stalled and the
opposition forces seemingly bogged down in a quagmire, isn't there a
danger the U.S. will look like a weakling and thus lose the support of
the Afghan people?'
Rumsfeld character: 'Isn't that the same question you asked last
week?'
Reporter: 'Oh, I'm sorry. Okay, with our military moving so rapidly
and opposition forces easily overrunning Taliban areas, isn't there a
danger the U.S. will look like a bully and thus lose the support of
the Afghan people?'
-- A male reporter: 'We're getting reports of U.S. special op forces
being dropped into Taliban areas with camouflage and night vision
goggles. This means the Taliban soldiers won't be able to see our
troops, but we'll be able to see them. Is that fair?'
-- Another male reporter: 'We're being told that Northern Alliance
forces are firing back at Taliban troops who have fired on them even
though the Taliban troops missed. Does the U.S. condone that?'
Rumsfeld: 'Now what kind of question is that?'
Reporter: 'Thought provoking?'
Rumsfeld: 'No.'
Reporter: 'Incisive?'
Rumsfeld: 'No. Remember what I said about your question the other
day?'
Reporter: 'That it was idiotic?'
Rumsfeld: 'And?'
Reporter: 'And that I am an embarrassment both to myself and to my
newspaper?'
Rumsfeld: 'That's right.'
6. Upright
For consistently wise and witty political commentary, we turned to a
friend, longtime Ronald Reagan hand, Lyn Nofziger, and this year was
no exception:
(Wise) "There seems little doubt that a tough and determined president
could have ridded the world of bin Laden years before he was able to
plan and carry out the attacks of Sept. 11."
(Witty) "Bin Laden thinks Yankees are bad / And calls for a holy
jihad. But he'll learn
too late / That he shouldn't tempt fate / By making those Yankees real
mad."
7. Dezinformatsia
Top "prize" for this year's best (worst?) example of press
disinformation goes to Fox News, which hired Geraldo Rivera in the
heat of the war against Jihadistan, putting him in the field with
America's finest defenders, and not firing this phony Leftist dupe
immediately when he was caught in an act of his trademark sensational
lying.
Rivera's big money shot in Afghanistan (thus far) was a tearful
choked-up report on Dec. 6 from "Kandahar -- hallowed ground.... [I]
walked over the spot where the friendly fire took so many of our, our
men.... It was just, the whole place, just fried, really, and bits of
uniforms and tattered clothing everywhere. I said the Lord's Prayer
and really choked up." Problem is, this Leftmedia Clintonista
prevaricator was hundreds of miles from where the incident actually
occurred -- all the way across Afghanistan.
Rivera claims the "fog of war" caused him to confuse the Kandahar
incident with the "friendly fire" deaths in Tora Bora. Problem is,
the Tora Bora incident occurred at least three days after Rivera's
Dec. 6 report. On Rivera's brash arrogance after his on-camera antics
claiming that he just dodged a sniper bullet, even his own cameraman
remarked, "They don't make a helmet big enough for his head."
"It was an honest mistake," claimed Fox News in a press release.
"Based on Geraldo Rivera's 30-year track record, Fox News has full
confidence in his explanation and journalistic integrity. This is not
the first, nor will it be the last, mistake made in a war zone." With
that statement, Fox just dug itself in deeper.
Fox gained its successes by treating conservatives and conservative
ideas with a reasonable degree of fairness, this year besting chief
cable news rival CNN in the ratings games. However, once Fox had
conservatives "locked up" in their viewer base, the network
immediately began an "outreach" campaign to appeal to Leftist viewers.
Bringing Rivera aboard was almost as nescient as Fox's decision to
hire Clintonista former Energy Secretary "China Bill" Richardson as an
"analyst."
Memo to Fox News: Achieving success with conservative backing, then
turning your back on conservatives as "having no place else to go"
usually does not work out well. Just ask the Republican National
Committee!
P.S. We dare Bill O'Reilly to spin this one....
8. Sociocrats
"Just as we need to examine the contents of our own colons, we need to
examine the contents of our government." --Author Alice Walker, at a
rally for quintessential Sociocrat Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), comparing
the contents of the Bush administration to the contents of her bowel
before her recent 10-day fast. (Lee, you may recall, was the lone
dissenting vote in the House measure in support of President Bush's
actions against Afghanistan.)
9. Village Idiots
The Village Matriarch herself, Ms. Hillary Rodham-Clinton, was booed
off the stage at this fall's Concert for New York -- much to the
surprise of her handlers. The most vigorous jeering came from New York
firefighters and police officers in the front rows. Firefighter
Michael Moran, brother of Battalion Chief John Moran, who died under
the rubble of 9-11, summed up his colleagues' opinion: "She wants to
spew her nonsense -- she doesn't believe the things she says. I don't
think there has ever been a sincere word that has ever come out of her
mouth." Another Village Celeb, actor Richard Gere, was also booed from
the stage after commenting, "I think in the [attack on Bin Laden]
right now...we can turn it into compassion and love and
understanding."
10. Short Cuts
"When I take action, I'm not going to fire a $2 million missile at an
empty $10 tent and hit a camel in the butt." --President Bush,
distinguishing between his response to terrorism and that of Bill
Clinton -- who failed to respond substantively after the first assault
on the World Trade Center in 1993 by Islamic extremists -- or to any
of their subsequent assaults around the world.

propensity for self-aggrandizement in this era when the stature of

discover how far the role of government advocated by contemporary
Leftists has departed from the sound and reasoned notion of that role
as defined by our Constitution as ratified in 1787.
Regarding the tone of The Federalist, let us just say that we only
have a few thousand words with which to rebut the blizzard of
Leftmedia print and broadcast effluent each week. And as for why we
refer to our opposition as "Leftists" -- because the Left has hijacked
the political lexicon. "Liberal" is a reference to our libertarian
friends -- and no self-respecting conservative should ever refer to a
Leftist as a "liberal." Old Tom Jefferson would have no part in such
folly!
About the "religious" content in The Federalist -- we do not subscribe
to the errant "separation of church and state" dogma. We know what the
Founders had to say about the integral role of faith in government,
and we know what Thomas Jefferson meant when referencing "a wall of
separation" in his 1801 letter to the Danbury Baptists. None
anticipated the secular cleansing of all levels of government enforced
by judicial activists today. The Federalist is written, edited and
published by men and women who are Christians. We believe that our
national foundation rests on Judeo-Christian principles. We do not
hide, or conversely, hide behind, our faith. And we should note that
we advocate for a nation of Christians -- not a Christian nation.

I don't care what color people are. Liberals have a label for anyone who
thinks for themselves.
I use the word "nigger" to describe those who degrade others so ugly no
other word comes close in character recognition. When people who are widely
loved and the recently departed are made fun of, using real nasty language,
having maggots dropping from your dass'hole, there isn't any shock value for
shaming the inappropriate. It's like if I went around and said Rosell, the
fag, who smokes crack and thinks up ways to tweak yours truly is just
himself a little cock roach playing the role of "Mimic" walking around
looking and behaving like Gods creature.
If there were a scale that measured my use of the word nigger to Rossell's
use of the word "cunt", "maggot infested" what ever, there's no comparison.
Real bigotry has come to America to kill. A cult of real racists are on
American soil, killing anyone who is American. How the heck do I get a bigot
label, SZARgoth is one of many who will die without hope of a life beyond
cunts and other shit. If people are so shallow to think that MY use of the
"n" word to describe "low down and dirty people is some how equitable with
SZARgoths' vulgarity, then sting me up and kill me.

A judge has issued two arrest warrants for the Rev. Al Sharpton over
$600 in unpaid fines for his role in a 1999 protest that shut down
Interstate 70.
The warrants mean the civil rights activist could be arrested the next
time he comes to St. Louis.
Sharpton must appear before Associate Circuit Judge Jack Garvey to
settle the warrants and pay the fines plus $200 in additional court
costs.
Sharpton's lawyer, Randall Cahill, had no comment on the warrants
Tuesday.
Minutes after jurors returned their verdict against Sharpton on Dec.
11, the civil rights leader said it would be "a privilege" to pay the
$600 in fines. But he didn't meet Friday's deadline to pay the fines
and court costs.
Sharpton had joined more than 120 other protesters in blocking the
interstate. Demonstrators were seeking greater minority participation
in highway contracts.
