Actually this is a major dispute now between Lebanon and Israel, both
claiming Humas as their 'national' dish. Both nations being of
questionable origin, I will give it to the Greeks if they claim
it...of course it's too bad we don't have any Turkish comrades on the

Hummus as far as I know aint Greek, its not sold in Greece and hardly
anyone
knows it. I only know it from the Arabs. Cyprus has it.

Interesting. I must of been adopted by Greek-Americans in their
restaurants. Of course everything is really mixed and match by
invasions over millenia.

It makes you wonder about this stuff; chickpeas are pretty ancient, so
hummus likely has an ancient origin as well. My impression of Greek
restaurants in SD is that most of the owners come from Crete, which
was under both Turkish and Egyptian rule for awhile, so maybe it's a
localized thing there as well as Cyprus. But Eastern Mediterranean
cuisine is basically the same all over, with regional variations; each
country has their own version of baklava. But really if the Greeks
want to claim one food item, it should be spanakopita. That is
deliciousness.
