A quarterly publication by the Internal Revenue Service lists those
citizens who voluntarily expatriate, or abandon their American citizenship
-- a growing number of whom are doing so to avoid taxes, according to
several published reports.

The latest list of those who have chosen to expatriate, published on May
8, 2013, included 679 citizens. The IRS publishes the list to comply with
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) of 1996.

Lists issued in other quarters have included well-known personalities,
such as Denise Rich, songwriter, socialite and the former wife of a
pardoned billionaire who has given up her U.S. citizenship, and, in doing
so, will reportedly save millions in U.S. taxes. Rich appeared under her
maiden name, Denise Eisenberg.

And Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, who made billions off the world's
most popular social network, has also chosen to renounce his U.S.
citizenship in favor or residence in Singapore, where there is no capital
gains tax.

on Tuesday, Congressional investigators found that some of Apple’s
subsidiaries had no employees and were largely run from the company’s
headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. But by officially locating them in
places like Ireland, Apple was able to, in effect, make them stateless
— exempt from taxes, record-keeping laws and the need for the
subsidiaries to even file tax returns anywhere in the world.

“Apple wasn’t satisfied with shifting its profits to a low-tax
offshore tax haven,” said Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who
is chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations,
which is holding the hearing Tuesday. “Apple successfully sought the
holy grail of tax avoidance.”

Because of what lawmakers called “gimmicks” and “schemes,” Apple was
able to largely sidestep taxes on tens of billions of dollars it
earned outside the United States in recent years. Last year,
international operations accounted for 61 percent of Apple’s total
revenue.

Investigators have not accused Apple of breaking any laws, and the
company is hardly the only American multinational to face scrutiny for
using complex corporate structures and tax havens to sidestep taxes.
Still, the findings about Apple are remarkable both for the amount of
money involved and the audaciousness of the company’s assertion that
its subsidiaries are beyond the reach of any taxing authority.

assist in defining future tax policy and laws.

Apple pays the full tax rate on US profits. Apple pays the full tax rates
in other countries for goods/services produced and sold there. Why should
Apple pay US taxes on that?

Apple owns separate companies in Ireland, taxed in Ireland. Profits from
those operations that are returned to the US go through a holding company in
Ireland, and are taxed at the full US rate after being returned.

Apple is operating with the rules set up. And that includes full time audit
by IRS agents that "live" in the Cupertino office.

Don't like the system, then tell us what you want, and get the system
changed. But, don't bitch about companies that live within the law.
