Anti-Zionism is the blood libel of conspiracy theories. The principal
targets of conspiracy theories in Europe were Jews and Freemasons or
members of other secret societies like the Rosicrucians. But antisemitism;
that is, the hatred of Jews, is a central theme with disturbing
regularity. In the world where hate for Jews is widely prevalent the left
and right dissolve together to form a kind of fusion paranoia.
Conspiracism flourishes at both extremes of the political spectrum, in the
United States it has often been identified almost exclusively with the far
right. But not anymore. It isn't just Pat Robertson's "Bavarian
Illuminati" anymore. And the antisemites are not easily identifiable as
cranks and nuts, or semi-literate political primitives. Many of them now
as then (in Nazi Germany) have fancy academic credentials.
