Disgusting Smear against John Kerry
Goodbye Bushie!
John Kerry and his crewmates from Vietnam. This morning on the front page of
the Washington Post, one of the central figures in the effort to distort
John Kerry's military service was completely discredited.
The group behind this smear campaign calls itself "Swift Boat Veterans for
Truth." But the truth is the last thing they are interested in.
President Bush refuses to condemn this group. He wants them to do his dirty
work. But this effort to distract attention from the issues that matter most
has failed.
This morning, John Kerry said he learned an important lesson in Vietnam:
"When you're under attack, the best thing to do is turn your boat into the
attacker." Today he took these lessons to heart, knocked down these charges,
and made a firm commitment to the American people that the lies about his
military service will not stop him from fighting for affordable health care,
good-paying jobs, and keeping America secure.
This doesn't mean that these blatantly false attacks won't continue -- the
Bush-Cheney campaign is desperate and has no record to run on. But it does
mean that we are not going to let them distract us from letting people know
about John Kerry's plan to make America stronger at home and respected in
the world.

of Firefighters Convention in Boston this morning:
Over the last week or so, a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has
been attacking me. Of course, this group isn't interested in the truth --
and they're not telling the truth. They didn't even exist until I won the
nomination for president.
But here's what you really need to know about them. They're funded by
hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Republican contributor out of Texas.
They're a front for the Bush campaign. And the fact that the president won't
denounce what they're up to tells you everything you need to know -- he
wants them to do his dirty work.
Thirty years ago, official Navy reports documented my service in Vietnam
and awarded me the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.
Thirty years ago, this was the plain truth. It still is. And I still carry
the shrapnel in my leg from a wound in Vietnam.
As firefighters you risk your lives every day. You know what it's like to
see the truth in the moment. You're proud of what you've done -- and so am
I.
Of course, the president keeps telling people he would never question my
service to our country. Instead, he watches as a Republican-funded attack
group does just that. Well, if he wants to have a debate about our service
in Vietnam, here is my answer: 'Bring it on.'
I'm not going to let anyone question my commitment to defending America --
then, now, or ever. And I'm not going to let anyone attack the sacrifice and
courage of the men who saw battle with me.
And let me make this commitment today: their lies about my record will not
stop me from fighting for jobs, health care, and our security -- the issues
that really matter to the American people.

According to Newsweek's assistant managing editor Evan Thomas,
"There's one other base here, the media. Let's talk a little media
bias here. The media, I think, wants Kerry to win and I think they're
going to portray Kerry and Edwards ... as being young and dynamic and
optimistic and there's going to be this glow about them..." (Inside
Washington television show, July 10).
Thomas' prediction is amply supported by the (non)coverage which the
Denver dailies, like most of the rest of the media, have given to this
week's meltdown of the Kerry campaign.
As reported in The Congressional Record, on March 27, 1986, Sen. John
Kerry spoke on the Senate floor against U.S. support for the
anti-communist contras in Nicaragua:
"I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I
remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge
and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States telling
the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in
Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared - seared - in me..."
Likewise, Kerry wrote an Oct. 14, 1979, letter to the editor of the
Boston Herald: "I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles
across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese
allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of
almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President
Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real."
He repeated the Cambodia Christmas story in Senate committee hearings
in June 1992 and September 1997.
Actually, in December 1968, the president of the United States was
Lyndon Johnson, not Richard Nixon. Nixon's statement that there were
"no American combat troops in Cambodia" was made in November 1971.
All available evidence indicates that Kerry was lying about Christmas
in Cambodia.
As detailed in the new book Unfit for Command, every officer in
Kerry's chain of command denies that Kerry's Swift boat came within 50
miles of Cambodia. Three crewmen on Kerry's boat have denied that they
ever went into Cambodia. (The other two refused to be interviewed.)
In Douglas Brinkley's Kerry biography, Tour of Duty, Kerry told
Brinkley that he spent Christmas Eve 1968 "near the Cambodian border"
in the town of Sa Dec. Sa Dec is in the center of South Vietnam and 50
miles from Cambodia.
The New York Daily News, the New York Post, The Washington Times, and
the London Telegraph all covered the Christmas in Cambodia story early
this week, but Colorado's Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post have
failed to do so.
In Colorado, the Cambodia fraud has been covered in depth on the Hugh
Hewitt Show, a national radio program broadcast on KNUS-AM (710) from
4-7 p.m. weekdays. Hewitt interviewed Steve Gardner, who served on
Kerry's boat for two of the four months that Kerry spent in Vietnam,
from November 1968 through January 1969. Gardner maintains that the
boat never came within 50 miles of Cambodia. You can read the

The Denver dailies have covered the story exclusively by attacking
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth through:
* An Associated Press article in both papers reporting that
John McCain denounced the attacks on Kerry (without providing
any evidence that the attacks are factually wrong);
* News columnist Mike Littwin criticizing Bush for not criticizing
the Swift boat veterans (Aug. 7);
* The Post's Jim Spencer defending Kerry's Purple Hearts (a July
30 column with more substance than other Kerry defenses); and
* An AP article pointing out that John Corsi, the co-author of
Unfit for Command has made disparaging remarks about Islam
and Catholicism (News, Aug. 11).
Early in the week, the Kerry campaign denied that Kerry had ever
claimed to have spent Christmas in Cambodia. Confronted with evidence,
the campaign refused to answer questions. On Wednesday, the campaign
abandoned the Christmas-in-Cambodia story that had been "seared" in
Kerry's memory. The campaign told Fox News that Kerry was in Cambodia
sometime, but would not specify when. The campaign told ABC News that
Kerry was in the Mekong Delta, which "consists of the border between
Cambodia and Vietnam, so on Christmas Eve in 1968, he was in fact on
patrol."
To the contrary, the Mekong River flows from Cambodia into Vietnam and
does not border the two countries; the Mekong Delta is adjacent to the
Pacific Ocean, and is nowhere near Cambodia.
The News ignored the story of Kerry retracting three decades of
Christmas-in-Cambodia tales. The Post also ignored the story, and
instead ran the attack on John Corsi which had appeared the day before
in the News.
It is as if the media had covered the Bush National Guard story only
by impugning Bush's critics, while barely acknowledging the substance
of the charges. Evan Thomas was right.

Except you are wrong. Every last one of the swiftboat vets served
right along side Kerry - not all were under his command on his boat,
but the swift boats operated in small 4-5 boat flotillas all the time,
and the swift vets were easily able to observe Kerry in action. Or
inaction, as is the more appropriate case. These guys bunked, slept,
ate, and fought the war together. They were there, with Kerry, and
they certainly have a right to voice their misgivings about the

Well, we know that John Kerry was the only officer in the History of
the Navy that managed to get a purple heart without an accompanying
combat report. He was also the only officer in the Navy during
VietNam that was reassigned after 3 purple hearts. The other officers
elected to finish out their tours.

Wrong again. Bush's pay records (released, unlike Kerry's) show that
Bush drilled every day he was required to drill. He did miss some
drills when asked for and received permission to take time off to work
on a senate campaign, but he made them up. He was never AWOL, not
once, not a single time. Bush has an honorable discharge - you don't
get an honorable discharge from the military if you are AWOL, no
matter what your last name is.

Soros, Moveon.org, et al have been putting out ads and lying about
President Bush for the last year. A recent one that comes to mind was
the lie about the proposed overtime pay from the administration.
Moveon.org had the study about it, they KNEW that that Bush's proposal
would INCREASE the ability for more people to claim overtime, and they
put out an ad that was a flat-out lie that claimed Bush was taking
away overtime pay. Soros, that radical leftist billionaire who is
jewish but hates jews, funded numerous print ads last year that flat
out lied about the Bush administration. Soros is part and parcel of
the 527 groups that continually put out LIE after LIE after LIE about
president Bush. Where's Lurch on all of this? I don't hear Lurch
denouncing Soros. I don't hear Lurch denouncing moveon.org.
President Bush has called for a ban on ALL soft money 527 ads -
afterall, he's been the target of over 60 million dollars of negative
ads by them, while Kerry has really only been hit by ONE ad - the
swift vets' ad. Kerry is proving to be a typical left wing
hypocrite. He wants it both ways. He wants Soros and 527's to

Kerry till after the war - and certainly never served with him -- yet he
is on TV day after day claiming to have 'served with Kerry' and claiming
that 'our boats did this and that -- and I wouldn't be here if they had

Jenn, you are right about O'Neill...O'Neill took over Kerry's boat
after Kerry left so he did not serve with Kerry. But O'Neill isn't
claiming he did serve alongside Kerry - what O'Neill did was to
interview and compile the evidence from the other vets who clearly DID
serve alongside Kerry. Thurlow, Chenoweth, O'Dell, Pees...the
division commanders, etc...all of these folks did serve alongside
Kerry.

breaks down is that what the President of the United States of America
does is largely known to the entire world. The fact that this president
so obviously does not care what his words mean, or worse yet, does
indeed care and says them deliberately, is what's so disturbing. Add to

By the way, I wrote to the journalist you originally quoted, and he has
now retracted his claim:
