As can been seen in the link below the navy had a ship nearby when
Paul and Rachel Chandler were kidnapped by pirates. What did they
Royal Navy do? Nothing!

This is truly shameful, how can we hold up our heads as a nation when
our navy does not seem to want to fight. Are there too many woman
aboard royal navy ships nowadays? Are the crews more interested in
shagging and partying then in behaving in a disciplined seaman-like
way?

Just a few weeks ago a black Royal Navy lady sailor was convicted of
drug smuggling whilst on a drug-busting exercise. You couldn't make it
up......Could you?

The next paragraph of this post gives an account taken from the link
given of what happened in the Shatt-al-Arab waterway a couple of
years back………..It was obvious then that no proud service could have
allowed this to happen without a fight. They acted like a bunch of
cowards. A few days later an Australian small boat carrying a less
number of men was also attacked……The Australians bravely fought off
the Iranians.
*************
“The Navy’s ignominy over the incident has parallels with the infamous
2007 incident when 15 armed Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines on
small boat patrol in the Shatt al-Arab waterway near Basra were taken
prisoner by Iranian seaborne forces without a shot being fired.

The personnel were kept for 12 days and paraded for the world’s media,
reducing what was once the finest fighting force in the world to a
laughing stock“.
***************
Why is our navy the laughing stock of the world? Why is our army so
badly equipped in Afghanistan? Why are we as a nation gradually
sinking beneath the waves we once ruled?

The reason is because the political party that rules us……The Lib/Lab/
Con Party is corrupt and possesses no patriotism, guts or care for
this once great nation…….All they are interested in is sticking their
hands in Expenses frauds, up a fellow members trousers or skirt and
giving our country away to all and sundry.

Rottenness starts from the top and spreads downwards in any country or
organisation. We have a rotten head and the rest of Britain is being
gradually taken over by this virus.

A Navy vessel was just 50ft away as pirates kidnapped the British
yacht couple. Why didn't our sailors stop them? Human rights, of
course...

What happened next has been described as ‘depressing’ and ‘shameful’.
And ‘hardly in the tradition of Nelson’ - which is something of an
understatement.

Not that any of us would have known about it if a sailor aboard the
Wave Knight had not blown the official Ministry of Defence version of
events out of the water.

Ever seen the 1935 film, 'Sanders Of The River'? - the story of African
District Commissioner, H G Sanders and his tireless quest to instil
discipline into unruly Africans by popping upstream in a gunboat
whenever the natives got restless?

Dunno what H G would have made of these woolly-headed pirates making off
with white captives under the very nose of the Royal Navy - but one can
imagine that some very stern dispatches would have been sent to London
about the matter.

William is the Captain of HMS Compliant - one of the new wave of naval
vessels, formerly known as Destroyers, but now renamed Conciliators,
that are built without any form of armament, and have boarding ladders
permanently deployed to assist illegal immigrants to scramble board,
before being politely ushered below decks to occupy well appointed
cabins, during their cruise to the UK...

I do hope they are served a buffet and that the crew put on an
entertaining show for them.

A hundred years ago pirates or 'Johnnie Foreigner' would have run a
mile when a British gunboat approached. I'm afraid the story of the
Emperor's New Clothes have reached them and they see us for we we are
- spineless.....

Set about destroying every Somali boat, from a 3 metre rowing boat
upwards, detectable along the coast. Drop a load of leaflets telling
them that if the hostages are not returned alive every male with pubic
hair who looks as though he has had a square meal in the last week will
be rounded up and shot. The fat ones will be gut shot.

So you wish the Royal Navy to commit a series of war crimes.

Of course you, like the others, have no tactical solution for the
kidnapping.

If there is no 'tactical solution' as you care to call it they just have
to get stuck in and do the job. Bugger the UN rules, Britain comes

This is utter rubbish, William.

The woolly-headed pirates have already laid down the rules of
engagement. They are heavily armed, they commit criminal acts, they
threaten to kill.

So, if they come across people with bigger guns, they should not be
surprised if they end up dead.

Actually, one suspects that they *wouldn't* be surprised if the Navy
opened fire on them - and that, in fact, they are astonished that they
are allowed to get away with their crimes.

Let's try another scenario, William. You awake in the early hours to
find me kidnapping a member of your family. I am heavily armed, and am
threatening to kill your terrified relative.

You have (despite being the man of peace we all know you to be) a
shotgun handily within reach.

As I depart with my hostage, you have a clear shot at my head.

Do you take it?, or do you sit down and rationalise the situation?

While it might be argued that the Navy did not have a 'clear shot'
because of the presence of the hostages, there remains the fact that
they could subsequently search the seas for 'pirate' vessels and blow
them out of the water, with no hostages to worry about.

A dozen sunken ships, and a dozen drowned Somali crews - and the message
would start to get through.

If it didn't, keep on sinking them until it did.

Well, clearly the RN should exit the area because their continued
presence creates the potential for further embarrasment.

Of course I do.

Although I wouldn't want to use a shotgun in those circumstances.

Far too messy.

They could, except that there are technical problems.

How do you tell the difference between pirates and peaceful fishermen
with an AK-47 along to keep the pirates from stealing their catch?

> A dozen sunken ships, and a dozen drowned Somali crews - and the message
> would start to get through.

It's a 3,000 Km coastline.

Where do you do the sinking?

> If it didn't, keep on sinking them until it did.

And how many innocents do you have to slaughter to get where you want to be?

It is, to repeat myself, a 3,000 Km long coast line and the pirates
operate up to 500 Km out to sea (Actually as the Gulf of Aden is only
300 Km wide it isn't quite as bad as it seems.)

Now that's something over a million square kilometres of open ocean, or
about half as much again as the North Sea.

It's a very big problem not amenable to tin-pot solutions developed by
people who think that blasting away at everyone they can see is a
reasonable approach.

Oh bugger! Tin hats needed again!! Of course we don't want the Royal Navy to
commit "any" crime. However, we/you should of course be aware that thanks to
EU and international rules, "nobody" can touch these pirates, and have to
return them unharmed when captured. More PC bloody nonsense. If the RN just
took target practice and blew these pirates out of the water, who would
know?
As for the Chandlers, well! What the bloody hell were they thinking about
even to "dream" of sailing in those waters?? For God's sake! They must have
been competely out of their minds, and WE are expected to get them out of
their mess now!

>

Easy. Keep all civilian yachtsmen out of those waters. Simple. Then make
aggresive strikes into the Somali villages which are concerned with piracy,
capture the ring leaders and put them through the international courts for
piracy and murder. Also, ALL commercial ships should be armed with automatic
weapons and howitzers to keep any pirates at bay.

You think nobody on a Royal Naval ship would rat out their captain?

There'd be a queue...

Agreed.

>

Not so easy.

Stopping people going about their lawful business on the high seas is,
erm, piracy...

Simple. Then make
> aggresive strikes into the Somali villages which are concerned with
> piracy, capture the ring leaders and put them through the international
> courts for piracy and murder.

I remember when the US Special Forces tried something like that in
Mogadishu...

It didn't end well...

They had to get the Pakistanis to rescue them...

Start messing about in rural towns in Somalia and there won't be any
Pakistani armour to come and rescue people.

That's before we get to the possibly divisive issue of collective
punishment and spotting who is 'Selim the pirate' and who is 'Selim the
fisherman'.

Because if you blast Selim the pirate nobody's going to mind that much,
after all, they'll all say, 'He had it coming, he's been pushing
his luck for months now', but if you blast Selim the fisherman you'll
be the 'Evil bastard trigger happy infidel crusaders and poor aunt
Fatima will starve now and we're all off to join the Jihad...'

Also, ALL commercial ships should be armed
> with automatic weapons and howitzers to keep any pirates at bay.

Who'll pay?

The insurers have already said they're quite happy with the way things
are going, they just pay up and get their ships (plus unarmed crews) back.

But for the sake of argument, let's assume someone has a spare couple
of billion quid.

At that point, how do you tell the difference between a merchant ship
and a pirate? (Howitzers don't work terribly well on ships and hitting
stuff with fixed heavy weapons from a merchant ship isn't a trivial
problem either, but why complicate things, it's not as if it's going
to happen)

The law says that ships carrying heavy weapons in fixed points are pirates

What you can do is arm the crew, but as crews on most merchant ships
these days are both very small and very mixed, usually serving a three
month contract at a time, you'd need to include small arms training
somewhere in their basic training.
