accurate results - they need accurate results for planning purposes
(as in, where do we put our limited financial resources for maximum
effect). They may advertise a fake poll for political reasons (i.e.,

Actually, you don't understand how things work. They don't "further
their cause" by making decisions based on bad data.
Look up what TV advertising costs. They need accurate poll results
so they can tell if these advertising campaigns are having the desired
effect. They may run different ads in different parts of the country
and bracket those with polls to see what effect the ads have. Then
they can use the most effective ones everywhere.
Now, they will selectively release poll results to the public (showing
only good news), but don't think they are getting bogus results from
Gallop or any of the other companies that do this sort of thing
professionally.

Of course, one *could* imagine Gallop or Galaxy being hired to do a
poll at an "AIDS parade" (whatever the hell that is), for example,
on behalf of a drug manufacturer curious about how many of the
particpants saw or remembered the company's advertisements.
Both Gallop and Galaxy would take a very dim view of someone
claiming such a poll was a public opinion poll representative of
a whole country (such lies would hurt the polling company's
credibility). There is probably some contractural thing forbidding
that - they'd almost have to put that in for self-preservation -
with Gallop or Gallaxy being allowed to issue a statement that no
such poll exists if the sample or results were misrepresented.
Of course, such polls of very specific sub-populations are typically
done only for marketing perposes and companies in general consider
their marketing data to be confidential.
These days, Gallop or Galaxy could distribute its results as a PDF
file, each with a report ID, and publish a digitial signature for the
report, separate from the report. If anyone tries to pull anything,
all you have to do then is to ask to see the PDF file and check
whatever they give you against the signature. There is no known way
other than exhaustive search (with some very small chance of an
accidental match) of turning a digital signature into an original,
so confidentiality is not a problem in practice.

Why? Gallop is a respected company. If you see people misusing the
results of a Gallop poll, what they will typically do is to take quite
a few polls and then publish the "best" results. If you poll about one
thousand people, you have an error of around 3 percent, and that is
the standard deviation so a small fraction of cases will be off by
more than that.
Political parties typically use polls with errors of around 3 percent
for practical reasons: to double the accuracy, you have to increase
the sample size by a factor of four. They'd rather spend the money on
doing more polls over time so that they can track trends, but they
don't want each poll to be highly inaccurate either. The 3 percent
accuracy simply reflects the tradeoff they make between more polls
versus more accurate polls, each option assuming a fixed budget.
I know it is hard for a lot of people to understand, but with the
high cost of TV advertising (a must in most political campaigns, at
least in the U.S.), you really need to monitor how well you are
doing, and you can't afford to get you polls done by a group of
flakes.

You can believe Gallop and (I presume from what RamRod said, Galaxy)
polls, but that doesn't mean you should trust what a political party
puts out in a press release. You can bet your ass, though that the
poltical parties pay for scientifically valid polls even if they
just use the polls internally.

Wrong - they know how to eliminate obviously bogus responses. I
won't clue you in as to how they might do that, but you might
consider that Gallop is paid to produce the most accurate polls
possible given the sample size.
