Dear President Bush,
Please accept our warmest congratulations on your victory in the
presidential elections. With the beginning of a new Administration comes
also new hope and optimism for the resolution of outstanding issues
remaining from the previous Administration. One such issue is the current
U.S. policy vis-à-vis Iran, a policy that has utterly failed to protect and
enhance U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East in
large.
The policy of applying broad, unfocused and unilateral sanctions upon Iran
with the goal of isolating that country has proven to be very expensive and
unsuccessful. Whereas American taxpayers and companies have paid a very high
cost in terminated trade and barred investment opportunities, our European
and Asian allies have laughed all the way to the bank while cashing in on
business contracts the Iranians would rather have given to U.S. firms.
In defiance of our historical experience, the Clinton Administration has
prohibited our companies, the greatest bearers of our American values, from
paving the road to peace and friendship with this pivotal nation. Iran is of
paramount importance to our strategic interests in the Persian Gulf and its
4,000-year-old history in this endlessly troubled part of the world
testifies of the vigor of its culture and people.
Mr. President, Iran is not the same country it was twenty years ago. A
majority of the population has no remembrance of the revolution or the
hostage-crisis. We should not fail this new generation of Iranians, as we
should not fail our own generation of Americans who are blessed from the
agonizing memories of the past.
In his inauguration speech in January 1989, your father told Tehran that
"goodwill begets goodwill". Unfortunately, time was never given for this
promise to be fulfilled. But the American people, including many
Iranian-Americans, have now put you in a position in which you can
materialize this promise and let good faith "be a spiral that endlessly
moves on".
Mr. President, we urge you, in the spirit of your father's pledge, to end
the imposed animosity between Iran and America. The Clinton Administration's
sanctions on Iran harm the U.S.'s interest, they are pressuring American
taxpayers, not the leadership in Tehran. All sanctions, except those on
arms, should be lifted as soon as possible and not be used as a basis for
negotiations with Tehran.
