Big Bear Causing Major Problems In Tahoe Community
A really big bear is causing big problems at the Lake Tahoe community of
Incline Village, Nevada wildlife officials said.
The black bear, estimated by some to be around 700 pounds, may be
responsible for as much as $70,000 in damage this year, according to the
Nevada Department of Wildlife. It has evaded traps and special night
patrols sent to look for it.
"He'll walk right by a trap, he won't go in them. He's really random
in where he goes. He's made it real tough to catch up with him."
Lackey said that this summer, a homeowner armed with .44 magnum
handgun confronted the bear after it broke into an Incline Village home
that it had already broken into several times before.
"He shot it right between the eyes and the bullet bounced off his
skull. We know that because we found it," Lackey said. "He shot it again
and hit it. We know that because there was a lot of blood, but it wasn't
a mortal wound."
Within a few weeks, the bear was back to its old antics, breaking into
garages and going after trash or food in freezers.
Lackey, who has been chasing the bear for the last three years, said
it has broken into 40 or 50 garages around Incline this summer alone.
"He's smart. He's super smart," Vaughan told the Reno Gazette-
Journal. "He's a big, bad boy."

Despite what hollywood says, the 44 mag is NOT a super-gun. It's a super
-handgun but pretty tame compared to an ordinary rifle or shotgun. I'd
rather have bear spray than any handgun if confronted by a bear.

And anyone knowledgeable would rather have any .30 centerfire RIFLE
than either in such a situation.
How long could any black bear keep going if shot in the chest with
even "only" a .30-30? The same killing spots for whitetail deer would
put it out of commission fast.

True, but I have a hard time believing a .44 mag bounced of the bbears
skull. Most likely it was a clean miss. Reminds me of the stories
of shooting Cape Buffaloes and how a round smaller than a .375 would
bounce of the horn boss. Total bullshit. I think Craig Boddington
did some tests on some dead buffs and even .270's balsted throgh the
boss with ease.

Handguns aren't powerful compared to long guns. But you should
consider that the bullet he used might have been one intended to
expand. Something intended for max penetration would've been
better. But people are considerably less robust than bears, so for
personal protection against people, I suspect that .44 would be
more than enough. But again, the recoil is a problem. I wonder if
one would be better off with a lighter round that goes faster.

I think you'd be fine with a 12 gauge shotgun with the right size
shot.

In this particular case, yes - but the guy didn't know in advance he was
gonna get a straight on head shot. In a body shot a semi-wadcutter is
better.

Maybe I'm a bit off, owing to seeing a lot of animals around

anyone or even tried to deserves to be shot. I do think the guy who
shot it and didn't kill it might need a good kick in the nads though.
