Second, our lack of understanding of the etiology of many complex
traits means that racial and ethnic labels remain useful in
epidemiological and clinical settings. Given the potential for
furthering racism by discussing race and genetics together in a
scientific context, we might seek to eliminate the use of racial
categories in these contexts. Given current health disparities,
however, and assuming that our society values the goal of
understanding the underlying basis of those disparities, the continued
use of labels in epidemiological research and clinical practice seems
justified19, 53. Racial and ethnic categories are proxies for a wide
range of factors, potentially genetic and nongenetic.
